Manukaya inscription which is very purified by the local community is carved on a stone on both sides, but the carved letters are so fine, so that not all the inscription contents can be read.

The first side (A) consists of 15 lines of writing, while the second side (B) consists of 8 lines of writing. Manukaya inscription uses Old Balinese language and letters. Side A which can still be read, among others, mentions the year issued inscription that is 882 Saka /960 AD, and mentions the name of king Jayasingha Warmadewa.

In addition, this inscription also contains the king's order to restore or repair a lake or tirtha in the waters of Mpul (now Tirta Empul in Tampaksiring) which every year suffered damage due to the rapid flow of water.

The lake is still considered sacred by the people, especially sekaa barong in Gianyar area. Every year the stone inscription is held, and the stone inscription is paraded to Pura Tirta Empul for sanctification.

Thus, if the number of years of the inscription above is considered as the year of the establishment of this holy place, it can be ascertained that the age of Tirta Empul Temple today has reached 1050 years.

Tirta Empul can also be known based on folklore that developed to date sourced from Kekwin Usana Bali. The contents of the lontar mainly tells that in ancient times apsara troops from heaven led by Dewa Indra departed from Kahyangan to Bali.

Dewa Indra with his army descended on Kahyangan Basukih, then set out on a journey west to attack King Mayadanawa in Surasilulu. King Mayadanawa was a very arrogant, proud king and forbade people from making offerings to the Gods.

Mayadanawa's attitude caused the Gods to become angry. Dewa Indra with Patih Citranggada, Citrasena and Jayanta and his troops divided the task of organizing a war strategy to fight Mayadanawa. The sound of kendang clashing gong rumbled, flags fluttered, soldiers marched towards Surahulu Village.

Finally this manuk was harvested by the god Indra, so the giant died. It is said that Mayadanawa blood from his mouth pokes a whirlpool, the flow of water Petanu name. River water should not be drunk, should not be used for bathing or washing the face because the water is believed to be sourced from giant blood.

This holy water is then named Tirta Empul." explained Jero Mangku

"Can tirta mala be used to paralyze a person through pellet science?" much

"Of course you can, for that you have to find the tirta Sudamala to defeat the tirta mala" said Jero Mangku.

"Then after we collected the tirta and sprinkled it to the affected person. What should we do if our friend is freed from that knowledge?" much

"This question is what I'm waiting for. You are very virtuous, son. You do not forget to be grateful if my wish is achieved" said Jero Mangku

"If the Brahmins and the knights bathe and wash their faces here, their faces and bodies will be refreshed and spared from sin and calamity. If the sinful Wesyans and Sudras would come here, they would be saved, while the virtuous would be fortunate. Those who come are expected to make offerings accompanied by a spell worshiping Lord Shiva. If the wesha and the sinful sudra would come here, it would be safe, while the virtuous would have good luck. Such is the request of Lord Indra when worshiping Lord Shiva, sound word from the sky of a triumph that is amazing" said Jero Mangku
