Info Brief..
Mudik (by KBBI is synonymous with the term return home) is the activity of nomads/migrant workers to return to their hometowns. Mudik in Indonesia is synonymous with annual traditions that occur before major religious holidays such as ahead of Lebaran, Christmas & New Year, Eid al-Adha and National Day. At that time there is an opportunity to gather with relatives scattered throughout the region, besides of course also sowan with parents. Transportation used include: aircraft, trains, ships, buses, and
private vehicles such as cars and motorcycles, even trucks can be used for homecoming.
The word mudik comes from the word "udik" which means south/upstream. In the past before in Jakarta there was massive urbanization, there are still many areas named the end of udik or ilir (north or downstream) and most of the suffixes were replaced with the word Malay south or north. Examples such as Meruya Udik, Meruya Ilir, Sukabumi Udik, Sukabumi Ilir, and so on.
At the time Jakarta was still named Batavia, the supply of produce in the Batavia city area was taken from areas outside the city walls in the south. Therefore, there are Jakarta area names associated with plants, such as Kebon Jeruk, Kebon Kopi, Kebon Nanas, Kemanggisan, Duren Kalibata, and so on. The farmers and traders of the produce carried their wares through the river. From there comes the term millir-mudik, which means the same as back and forth. Scabies or hickheads when returning from the city back to the fields, so continue repeatedly.
