When it rains, it's a golden time to pray.

Some people when they notice the rain, some get nervous. Especially if the rain is felt to interfere with its activities, there may be meetings, appointments or others. What happens is to complain and complain. Whereas if we reflect and understand the hadiths of the Prophet shallallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, when the rain falls is when the mustajabnya do’a, meaning that do’a more easily granted.

Ibn Qudamah in Al Mughni[1] said, ”It is recommended to do’a when the rain falls, as narrated that the Prophet shallallahu ’alaihi wa sallam bersabda,

اُطْلُبُوا اسْتِجَابَةَ الدُّعَاءِ عِنْدَ ثَلَاثٍ : عِنْدَ الْتِقَاءِ الْجُيُوشِ ، وَإِقَامَةِ الصَّلَاةِ ، وَنُزُولِ الْغَيْثِ

“Seek do’a mustajab in three circumstances: [1] Meeting two troops, [2] Toward the prayer, and [3] When it rains.”[2]

Likewise, there is a hadith from Sahl bin Sa’d, he said that the Prophet of Shallallahu ’alaihi wa sallam said,

ثِنْتَانِ مَا تُرَدَّانِ الدُّعَاءُ عِنْدَ النِّدَاءِوَ تَحْتَ المَطَرِ

“Two do’a that will not be rejected: [1] do’a when adzan and [2] do’a when when it rains.”[3]

Do’a very well read at that time was to ask for the rain to be sent down. The promised do’a is,

اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّباً ناَفِعاً

“Allahumma shoyyiban naafi’aa [Oh Allah, let us down a useful rain].”

That is what the Prophet Shallallahu ’alaihi wa sallam said when he saw the rain falling. It is based on the hadith of Ummul Mukminin, ’Aisyah radhiyallahu ’anha, p,

إِنَّ النَّبِىَّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- كَانَ إِذَا رَأَى الْمَطَرَ قَالَ « اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّباً نَافِعاً

”Prophet shallallahu ’alaihi wa sallam when seeing the rain fall, he uttered, ”Allahumma shoyyiban nafi’”[Ya Allah send us a useful rain]”.[4]

Ibn Baththol said, ”Hadits contains a recommendation to do’a when it rains so that goodness and prosperity increase, as well as more benefit.”

Al Khottobi said, ”Water of rain flowing is a gift.”[5]

Hopefully the rain makes us more grateful, not even complaining. Take advantage of this moment to ask Allah Ta’ala for the affairs of the world and the hereafter. Do not waste the opportunity to pray for the good of self, wife, children, relatives and other Muslims.
