Hadith #1452

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ -رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا- قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ – صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ طَعَامًا, فَلَا يَمْسَحْ يَدَهُ, حَتَّى يَلْعَقَهَا, أَوْ يُلْعِقَهَا». مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ

From Ibn ‘Abbas radhiyallahu ‘anhuma, he said that the Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda, “If one of you eats, then one of you, so let him not wipe his hand before he licks it or another licks it.” (Muttafaqun ‘alaih) [HR. Bukhari, no. 5456 and Muslim, no. 2031]

This hadith is issued by Imam Bukhari in the book Al-Ath’imah (food), Chapter “Licking fingers and sucking them before being rubbed with a handkerchief.” Also narrated by the Muslim Imam, from the Sufyan line, from ‘Amr bin Dinar, from ‘Atha’, from Ibn ‘Abbas. Memorized ‘tha’aman’ is not found in Bukhari history, only found in Muslim history

Some Adab Eat

First: Read bismillah when you start eating.

إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى فَإِنْ نَسِىَ أَنْ يَذْكُرَ اسْمَ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى فِى أَوَّلِهِ فَلْيَقُلْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ

“When one of you eats, then he should mention the name Allah Ta’ala (read ‘bismillah’). If he forgets to mention the name Allah Ta’ala at the beginning (forget to read ‘bismillah’), let him say: ‘Bismillaahi awwalahu wa aakhirohu (with the name Allah at the beginning and end).’” (CHR. Abu Daud, no. 3767 and Tirmidhi, no. 1858. Tirmidhi says the hadith is hasan shahih. Shaykh Al-Albani said that the hadith is shahih)

From Hudzaifah radhiyallahu ‘anhu, Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda,

إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَسْتَحِلُّ الطَّعَامَ أَنْ لاَ يُذْكَرَ اسْمُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ

“Really satan condenses food that God does not name on him.” (CHR. Muslims, no. 2017)

Second: Eat with your right hand and eat near you.

From ‘Umar bin Abi Salamah radhiyallahu ‘anhu, Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said to him,

يَا غُلاَمُ سَمِّ اللَّهَ ، وَكُلْ بِيَمِينِكَ وَكُلْ مِمَّا يَلِيكَ

“O son, say the name of Allah, and eat with your right hand, and eat what is before you.” (CHR. Bukhari, no. 5376)

Third: Eat from the edge, not from the middle.

From Ibn ‘Abbas radhiyallahu ‘anhuma, Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda,

إِنَّ الْبَرَكَةَ تَنْزِلُ وَسَطَ الطَّعَامِ فَكُلُوا مِنْ حَافَتَيْهِ وَلاَ تَأْكُلُوا مِنْ وَسَطِهِ

“That blessing goes down in the middle of the meal, then start eating from the edge and do not start from the middle.” (CHR. Tirmidhi, no. 1805 and Ibn Hibban, no. 5245. Abu ‘Isa At-Tirmidhi says that this hadith is hasan shahih)

Fourth: Not eating in a lean state.

From hadith Abu Juhaifah radhiyallahu ‘anhu, he said that Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda,

أَمَّا أَنَا فَلاَ آكُلُ مُتَّكِئًا

“Whatever I do not like to eat while leaning.” (CHR. Tirmidhi, no. 1830 and Ibn Hibban, no. 5240. Abu ‘Isa At-Tirmidhi says that this hadith is hasan shahih)
