The Mountains Of Madness

The Mountains Of Madness
Part 3

They have always been controlled through the hypnotic suggestions of Old People, and have modeled their hard plasticity into various useful temporary limbs and organs; but now the power of modeling themselves is sometimes done independently, and in various forms of imitation is instilled by past suggestions. Apparently, they have developed a semi-stable brain whose detached and sometimes stubborn will echoes the will of Old People without always obeying it. This sculptural image of a shoggoth makes Danforth and I scared and hate. They are usually shapeless entities consisting of viscous jellies that look like clumping bubbles; and each is about fifteen feet in diameter when a ball is. However, they have a constantly changing shape and volume; discarding the temporary development or forming organs of sight, hearing, and speech that appear to be imitations of their masters, he said, either spontaneously or according to advice.

They seem to have become very stubborn in the middle of the Permian era, perhaps 150 million years ago, when the war of reconquest was actually conducted over them by the old Navy. These war images, and headless clothing, were slime-coated where shoggoths usually left their slain victims, it had an extraordinarily frightening quality despite the abyss intervening from countless ages. The Old Men have used a curious weapon of molecular disruption against the rebellious entity, and have finally achieved a full victory. Afterwards, the statues show the period during which shoggoths were tamed and destroyed by armed Old Ones when wild horses in the western part of America were tamed by cowboys. Although during rebellions, shoggoths had demonstrated the ability to live out of water, this transition was not recommended; because their usefulness on land was hardly commensurate with their management difficulties.

During the Jurassic era, Ones met with new difficulties in the form of a new invasion from outer space — this time by a half beetle creature, a, half the crustaceans of a planet that can be identified as the remote and recently discovered Pluto; the creatures are undoubtedly the same as those in the northern whisper hill legend, he said, and it is remembered in the Himalayas as Mi-Go, or the Evil Snowman. To fight these creatures, the Old People attempted, for the first time since their terrena arrival, to advance again to the planet of the ether; but in spite of all the traditional preparations, the, it is no longer possible to leave the Earth's atmosphere. Whatever old secret of interstellar travel has been, it's definitely lost to racing. In the end Mi-Go drove the Old One out of all the northern landmasses, even though they were powerless to disturb those at sea. Little by little the slow retreats of older races to their native Antarctic habitat begin.

It is interesting to note from the battle in this photo that the seeds of Cthulhu and Mi-Go seem to consist of material far more different from what we know than the substance of the Old Man. They are capable of undergoing transformations and reintegrations that their enemies are unlikely to undertake, and therefore seem to originate from the abyss of more distant cosmic space. The Old, but because of its abnormal toughness and its peculiar vital properties, is truly material, and must have its absolute origins in the known continuum of spacetime; while the first source of other creatures can only be guessed with bated breath. All this, of course, assuming that non-terrestrial relationships and anomalies ascribed to the attacking enemy are not pure mythology. Conceivably, the Old may have found a cosmic framework to explain their occasional defeat; as historical interest and pride clearly form their main psychological element. It is important that their historical records fail to mention the many races of advanced and powerful beings whose culture and prominent large cities continue to survive in obscure legends.

Clear maps showing the Carboniferous world from a hundred million or so years ago show significant rifts and chasms destined later to separate Africa from the once continuous world of Europe (which was it was the Valucia of the major legends of hell), Asia, America, and the continent of Antarctica. Other maps — and most importantly with regard to the founding fifty million years ago of the great dead city around us — show all the continents that exist today are differentiated well done. And in the latest specimen that can be found — which is likely from the Pliocene epoch — estimates of the world today appear very clearly regardless of the linkage of Alaska with Siberia, North America with Europe via Greenland, and South America with the continent of Antarctica via Graham Land. In the Carboniferous map, the whole world — ocean floor and vast landmass — has the symbols of the vast Ones stone cities, but on subsequent charts the gradual recession towards Antarctica becomes very modest. The late Pliocene specimen shows no mainland cities except in the Antarctic continent and the tip of South America, or oceanic cities to the north of the fifty-fifth parallel South Latitude. Knowledge and interest in the northern world, except for the study of coastlines that might have been made during long exploratory flights on membrane wings such as fans, clearly decreased to zero among the Old.

The destruction of cities through mountaineering upthrust, centrifuges from continents, seismic shocks of land or seabed, and other natural causes are common note problems; and it's interesting to observe how fewer replacements are made as time goes on. The great megalopolis of the dead that evaporated around us seemed to be the last common center of the race; it was built at the beginning of the Cretaceous Period after the titanic earth bend had obliterated a more vast predecessor not far away. It seems that this common region is the holiest of all, where it is said that the first Old Ones have settled on the bottom of the sea. In the new city it — many of its features that we can recognize in those statues, but which stretches completely a hundred miles along the mountains in every direction beyond the farthest boundary of our earth survey — there are famous as certain sacred stones that are formed. Part of the first seabed city, which was pushed to light after a long epoch in the course of the general collapse of the strata.
