The Time of Slander

Umm Salamah Radhiyallahu ‘anha (died 59 H)

Umm Salamah is a Ummul-Mukminin who has a strong personality, beautiful, and charming, and has a spirit of jihad and patience in facing trials, especially after separating from her husband and children. Thanks to the maturity of thought and accuracy in making decisions, he presented a noble position in the side of the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam.

In the sirah Ummahatul Mukminin explained about the many noble attitudes and important events from him that can be exemplified by the Muslims, both his attitude as a wife who always maintain family honor and as a fighter in the way of Allah.

The real name of Umm Salamah is Hindun bint Suhail, known by the name Umm Salamah. He was raised in the noble circle of the Quraysh Tribe. His father was Suhail bin Mughirah bin Makhzurn. Among his people, Suhail is known as a philanthropist so it is nicknamed Dzadur-Rakib (the host of the travelers) because he always entertains everyone who accompanies him on the way. He was the leader of his people, the richest, and the greatest of his vibes. The mother of Umm Salamah was Atikah bint Amir bin Rabi’ah bin Malik bin Jazimah bin Alqamah al-Kananiyah who came from Bani Faras. Thus, Hindun grew up in a respected and respected noble environment. Her beauty melted everyone who saw her and her personal kindness had been ingrained since childhood.

Marriage and the Struggle

Many young Meccans wanted to make Hindun edits, and the one who managed to marry him was Abdullah bin Abdul Asad bin Hilal bin Abdullah bin Umar bin Makhzum, who succeeded him, a famous horseman of the valiant heroes of the tribe of Bani Quraysh. His mother was Barrah bint Abdul-Mutthalib bin Hashim, the aunt of the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam. Abdullah was the Prophet's half-brother of Tsuwaibah, a slave of Abu Lahab. They lived happily, and their households were overwhelmed with harmony and well-being.

Not long after that, the preaching of Islam attracted their hearts so that they embraced Islam and became the first people to convert to Islam. Similarly, Hindun, she was among the first to convert to Islam, and with her husband began a struggle in their lives.

The Quraysh always harassed and tortured the Muslims so that they would renounce Islam and return to the religion of their ancestors. Seeing such conditions, the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam allowed them to migrate to Habashah, so they were referred to as the first muhajirin. They settled in Habashah, and there Hindun gave birth to her children: Zainab, Salamah, Umar, and Durrah.

After some time, they intended to return to Mecca, especially after hearing the Islam of two important figures of Quraysh, Umar bin Khaththab and Hamzah bin Abdul-Mutthalib. However, it turns out that the torture is still ongoing, even more devastating. To preserve the honor of himself and his family, Abu Salamah asked for protection from Abu Talib (uncle of the Prophet) from the torment of his people, the Bani Makhzum, and Abu Talib declared his protection.

The Ordeal Comes

Because the Quraysh were still torturing the Muslims, Allah opened the hearts of the people of Medina to accept Islam. Then the Prophet allowed the Muslims to emigrate there, both in groups and individually. Abu Salamah, his wife, and his son (Salamah) emigrated there. In the middle of their journey was blocked by the Bani Makhzum (the people of Umm Salamah) who then seized and held Umm Salamah hostage. The family of Abu Salamah (Bani Asad) intervened and they refused to give up Salamah, even the child was deprived and kept away from his mother. Bani Makhzum kidnapped Umm Salamah and was imprisoned. As for Abu Salamah left to Yathrib with a heart full of sorrow for having to part with his wife and child.

This situation has been going on for less than a year. Umm Salamah was constantly weeping with disappointment over the actions of her people, so that at last there was a man of her people who felt pity and let Umm Salamah follow her husband in Medina. As for the Bani Asad handing back his son, Salamah, to him. However, there were many obstacles that he had to face, and thanks to his strong faith and desire, he was able to overcome them and arrived in Medina.

Abu Salamah's Message to His Wife

In defending Islam, the role of Abu Salamah is enormous. He was known to be brave in war. The Prophet honored him by appointing him as the Messenger of Allah's representative in Medina when he went to lead the army in the battle of the Dzil Ashirah in the second year of the hijri. Abu Salamah participated in the Battle of Badr and Uhud. During the Battle of Uhud, Abu Salamah was severely wounded and almost died, but he recovered a short time later.

After the Battle of Uhud, the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam received news that Bani Asad was about to attack the Muslims in Medina. Before they attacked, the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam took the initiative ahead of them. In this mission, he appointed Abu Salamah to lead a team of one hundred and fifty men and in it there were Saad bin Abi Waqash, Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah, Amir bin Jarrah, and others, and the others. The troops were directed to Mount Quthn, where the springs of Bani Asad. A glorious victory was won by the forces of Abu Salamah, and they returned to Medina with many spoils of war. In Medina, Abu Salamah's wounds went so far that he had to rest for some time. When sick, the Prophet always visited and prayed for him.

Umm Salamah always accompanied her husband who was in a state of pain so that she took care and took care of him day and night. One day, Abu Salamah's fever intensified, then Umm Salamah said to her husband, “I get the blessing that a woman whose husband died, then her husband went to heaven, his wife will go to heaven, if after that his wife does not remarry, and God will gather them later in heaven. Similarly, if the wife dies, and the husband does not remarry after his death. To that end, let us promise that you will not remarry after my death, and I promise you not to remarry after your death.” Abu Salamah said, “Will you obey my command?” He replied, “As for me to deliberate just to obey.” Abu Salamah said, “If I die, then marry.” Then he prayed to Allah ”Yes Allah, grant Umm Salamah after me someone better than me, who will not harm and hurt him.”

In the final moments of his life, the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam was always beside Abu Salamah and always begged for his healing to Allah. But God willed another. A few moments later death came to pick me up. The Prophet closed Abu Salamah's eyes with his noble hand, nine times. Some of those present said, “Yes the Messenger of Allah, are you in a state of oblivion?” He replied, “I am not at all in a state of forgetting, even though she was filial to him a thousand times, she is entitled to the takbeir.” Then he turned to Umm Salamah and said, “Whosoever is afflicted by a calamity, say as Allah has commanded, ‘We are Allah's, and to Him shall we be returned. O Allah, bless me in my misfortune and give me a better substitute than him, and Allah will do it for him

After that Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam.do’a: “Ya Allah, give steadfastness to his sorrow, comfort him from the calamity that befell him, and give him a better substitute.”

Abu Salamah died after fighting to establish Islam, and he had gained a noble position in the side of the Prophet. After the death of Abu Salamah, Umm Salarnah was overcome with sadness. She is a widow and mother to orphans.

After the death of Abu Salarnah, the leaders of the Companions quickly asked for Umm Salamah. This they did as a sign of respect for her husband and to protect themselves Umm Salamah. So Abu Bakr ash-Shiddiq and Umar ibn al-Khaththab asked for his hand, but Umm Salamah refused.

At the time of grief over the husband who really loved her and had not got a better person than her, she was visited by the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam. The Prophet said to him, “Ask Allah that He may reward you for your misfortune and replace you (husband) better.” Umm Salamah asked, “Who is better than Abu Salamah, O Prophet?”

The House of the Prophet.

The Prophet began to think about the case of Umm Salamah, a mujahideen who had patience, and Umm Salamah also rejected the proposal of two of his friends, Abu Bakr and Umar. The Prophet thought with great consideration and compassion not to let him dissolve in sadness and solitude.

In such a situation the Prophet sent Hathib ibn Abi Balta’ah to meet Umm Salarnah with the intention of asking him for her hand. So by Umm Salamah received the proposal. How is it possible for him not to receive a proposal from a person better than Abu Salamah, even better and everyone in the world.

With this marriage, Umm Salamah belongs to Ummahatul-Mukminin, and by the Prophet he was placed in the room of Zainab bint Khuzaimah called Ummul-Masakiin (mother to the poor) until Umm Salamah died.

It was told by Umm Salamah to us. He said, “I was edited by the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam., then I was moved and placed in the house of Zainab (ummul-masakiin).”

Some of the privileges that Umm Salamah has are logical acumen, maturity of thinking, and correct decisions on many things. Therefore, he has a great position on the side of the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam., like his interaction with the Umahatul-Mukminin which is an interaction filled with affection and tenderness.

His Great position

Among the things that show his high position on the side of the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam is what Urwah bin Zubair “Rasulullah Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam told. having Umm Salamah perform the prayer of dawn in Mecca on the day of slaughter (qurban) — when it was the day (turn). Therefore, the Prophet was pleased with his agreement.”

So is the hadith of Umm Kulsum bint Uqbah which was included by Ibn Sa’ad in his (book) Thabaqat. Ummi Kulthum said, “Then Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam.married Umm Salamah, he said to him, ‘Truly I gave to King Najasyi a vessel containing perfume and a blanket. However, I dreamed that King Najasyi had died, and the gift I gave him was returned to me. Because it was returned to me, it became mine.”

As the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam said, King Najasyi died, and the gift was returned to him. Then he gave to each of his wives one uqiyah (1/2 liter of Egypt) and he gave (remnant) the whole and a blanket to Umm Salamah.

Then wept Umm Salamah. So the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam asked about the cause of his crying. He said, “O Messenger of Allah, you privileged them while I and my daughter left them. He said, “Truly you and your daughter belong to my family.”

The daughter of Umm Salamah, Zainab, grew up in the pet Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam.he was among the women who had extensive knowledge in his time.

Before the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam.changed Umm Salamah, revelation had come down to the Prophet in the room of Aisha, with which Aisha took pride in her other wives. So after the Prophet married Umm Salamah, the revelation came down to him when he was in the room of Umm Salamah.

Some Brilliant Attitudes in the Life of Umm Salamah.

Among his great attitude was what he showed to the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam.on the (treaty) day of Hudaibiyah. At that time he accompanied the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam on his way to Mecca with the aim of performing Umrah, but the polytheists prevented them from entering Mecca, the Hudaibid Covenant was signed between the two sides. However, most of the Muslims felt betrayed and felt that the polytheists had abandoned some of the rights of the Muslims. Among the majority who took revenge was Umar bin al-Khaththab, who said to the Prophet in his conversation with him, “What are we giving up in our religion?” The Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam replied, “I am a servant of Allah and His apostle. I will not offend His commandments, and He will not spare me.” However, the danger signs increased after the Prophet Shallallallahu Alaihi Wassalam told the Muslims to perform the slaughter of the sacrificial animals and then shave, but none of them carried it out. He repeated his call three times without any response. He met his wife, Umm Salamah, and told her about the attitude of the Muslims. Umm Salamah said, “O Prophet of Allah, do you want this command of Allah to be carried out by the Muslims? Come out, then do not speak a word to any of them until you have slaughtered your sacrifice and called the barber who shaved you.”

The Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam was amazed at his opinion and rose to work as proposed by Umm Salamah. When the Muslims saw the Prophet doing this without saying to them, they rose up and slaughtered and some of them began to shave their heads without any sense of grievance and remorse for the actions of the Prophet who preceded them.

Umm Salamah has accompanied the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam.in many wars, namely the battle of Khaibar, the liberation of Mecca, the siege of Tha’if, the battle of Hawazin, Tsaqif then joined him in Haji Wada’.

We do not forget his attitude towards Umar ibn al-Khaththab, when Urnar came to him and asked him to speak about the needs of Ummahatul-Mukminin to the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam. And he said, “You are strange, O son of al-Khaththab. You have interfered in every matter so as to interfere in the affairs of the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam. and his wives?”

After the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam died he always remembered him and was very sad for his death. He always did a lot of fasting and worship, not miserly to science, and narrated the hadith that came from and the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam.

He has narrated many hadiths from the Prophet and her husband, Abu Salamah, as well as from Fatima al-Zahraa While those who narrated from him are many, among them were his sons and princes and companions and scholars of hadith.

Among some of his apparent attitudes was on the day of the liberation of the city of Mecca. At that time the Prophet came out of Medina armed his army with greatness and numbers that had never been witnessed by the Arabs, so the Quraysh idolaters felt afraid, and they were afraid, and they came out of the house with the intention of meeting the Prophet to repent and declare their Islam.

These included Abu Sufyan bin al-Harts bin Abdul-Muthalib (son of the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam.) and Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah bin al-Mughirah (son of aunt [of the father] of the Prophet, brother Umm Salamah). When they both asked for permission to enter the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam., he refused to give permission for both because of their harsh torture of kaurn muslimin before he emigrated from Mecca.

So said Umm Salamah to the Prophet with compassion towards his own family and also the family of the Prophet, “O Prophet, they are both your children and your lips (and father) and your brother-in-law.” The Prophet replied, “There is no need for me with both of them. As for my parnan son, I have been treated by him badly. As for my aunt's son (of the father) and my brother-in-law have said in Mecca with what he said.”

The statement had reached Abu Sufyan, the son of the Prophet's uncle. So he said, “By Allah, he must allow me or I will take this child with both hands - at that time he was with his son, he said, Ja’far-then karni must wander the world so die of thirst and hunger.”

Then Umm Salamah told Abu Sufyan to the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam, again asking for mercy. Finally his heart was broken, and he allowed them both to enter. So both entered and declared Islam and repented before the Prophet.

His attitude towards Slander

Umm Salamah was always in her house, always sincerely worshiping Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala and taking care of Sunnah her beloved husband at the time (khilafah) Abu Bakr ash-Shiddiq and Umar bin al-Khaththab.

During the caliphate of Uthman ibn Affan he saw the turmoil of the situation and the division of the Muslims around the caliphate. The danger of slander is mounting in the skies of the muslirnins. So he went to Uthman and advised him to stick to the instructions of the Prophet Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam, and the instructions of Abu Bakr and Umar ibn al-Khaththab, not to deviate and the instructions forever.

What was feared by Umm Salamah also happened, namely the killing of Uthman who was reading the Qur’an and the wind of slander was blowing fiercely against the Muslims. At that time Aisyah had made up her mind to come out to Bashrah accompanied by Talha bin Ubaidillah and Zubair bin al-’Awwam with the aim of mobilizing the masses to fight Ali ibn Abi Talib. So Umm Salamah sent a letter that had beautiful literature to Aisha.

From Umm Salamah, Prophet's Wife Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam., to Aisyah Ummul-Mu’ minin.

Verily I praise Allah, whom there is no god (God) but He. Amma ba’du's.

You have indeed torn the barrier between the Prophet Shallallallahu Alaihi Wassalam and his people who are the hijab that has been prescribed its fragrance. Verily the Qur’an has given you glory, so do not let go.

And Allah has restrained your voice, and let not you cast it out, and Allah has made it clear to this people that the Messenger of Allah Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam. knowing that women have a duty to jihad (war), he would tell you to take care of it.

Do you not know that he forbids you to go beyond the limits of religion, for indeed the pillar of religion cannot be firmly established by the intervention of women when it is tilted, it cannot be repaired by a woman if it is destroyed.

Women's jihad is subject to all conditions, child-rearing, and loving-kindness.

Umm Salamah was on the side of Ali ibn Abi Talib because he followed the agreement of the Muslims on his election as their caliph. Therefore, Umm Salamah sent/sent his son, Umar, to join the war in the ranks of Ali.

His Death

In the 59th year of hijri, the age of Umm Salamah has reached 84 years. Old age and senile encroach on the increase in age. Allah ta’ala lifts his holy spirit upward into His presence. He died after living an activity filled with sacrifice, jihad, and patience in the path of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala and His Apostle.

He was saluted by Abu Hurairah Radhiyallahu'anhu and buried in al-Baqi’ next to the other Ummahatul-Mukminin graves.

May Allah's mercy be with Sayyidah Umm Salamah and may Allah give him a proper place by His side. Amens.
