Drying his hair, Chris walked up to the bed and grabbed his phone. He checked several incoming emails and also called Rich to give instructions that he had to run tomorrow morning. Finished doing a brief coordination of work problems, he went straight to the wardrobe and put on his home clothes. Sighing, Chris laid his body on his comfortable bed. He is the type of man at home, so even though he feels various luxurious facilities during his official trip, but the house remains the most comfortable place for him.
While drowning his face into his padded pillow and almost entering the dream world, Chris' brain began to realize something that finally made him get back up and sit up leaning towards the head of the bed. His eyes caught something that looked awkward in his bedside table drawer. The lacquer seemed to open a little, and there seemed to be something inside. Throughout Chris' memory, he almost never used the drawer so this situation made him scrunch his forehead. He opened the drawer and pulled out a brown envelope with the words: to Chris on the surface.
Chris cradled the envelope in his hand and felt like there were some things rubbing against each other inside. He did not recognize the writing but his heart began to guess about who the sender was, let alone he knew the access that people had to go in and out of his personal territory was quite limited. No, he knows for sure who owns this envelope and his brain is sane enough to be able to assume the contents. But somehow, without wanting it his heart began to feel afraid to open it.
Slowly, he poured the contents of the envelope on the mattress and saw a document, a piece of paper, several cards and two rings that he was very familiar with because he bought it. Chris grabbed the rings, it was the engagement and wedding ring he was forced to give to his wife. He realized how simple the rings were, even he remembered that he only spent money to pay for them but never helped to choose his model. Her memories returned when she was at the jewelry store along with Rina.
Flashback 1.5 years ago.
"Hurry choosing. I don't have much time." Chris checked his watch and realized that he only had 1 hour to finish this trivial affair. He had been contacted by Rich that they would have an impromptu meeting, making him more impatient to get back to the office immediately.
At that time, Chris briefly realized about the look of Rina's face that looked confused and instead asked Chris why they were in the jewelry store. Resisting her frustration, Chris replies that they have to buy an engagement ring and also a wedding for Lina. He did not even realize that he should have bought the ring a pair and just wanted to run his mother's decree immediately.
After looking around for a while, Rina finally dropped her choice on 2 rings in front of Chris. "I want this model."
Looking at the rings, Chris realizes that the model is simple but he does not want to think too much about it, because he believes Rina will start suing him when they are officially married later. Maybe she just pretended to be a simple woman. After all, all women think the same, only want to men who make money. This was not much different from the Rina that he also knew, marrying her due to the money factor. This reason makes Chris become less appreciative of his future wife from the beginning of their meeting.
When paying for the two rings, Rina seemed to be looking at him with a strange look. The woman seemed to want to say something, but seemed hesitant.
"Why?" ask Chris. He was less fond of Lina's gaze which made him less comfortable. As if he made a mistake.
"If you don't like it, later after marriage I will buy more expensive. But now, just wear this one. I don't have time to choose ****-necessary whining like this." Chris spoke curtly, to cover up his discomfort.
Lina quickly grabbed the jewelry bag from Chris' hand and smilingly replied immediately, "No. Its alright. Something like this is enough too. Thank you." Thank you."
The woman decided not to prolong the matter, because she knew the meaning of their marriage. He will try to be patient and focus on his goals only.
The day just passed and they both returned to their activities. Chris is picked up by Rich back to the office, and Rina chooses to take a taxi to get back to her workplace. Chris did not realize, that it was the first time he would start hurting Lina with his words.
Back to the present.
When he saw the rings, Chris realized that he had never seen Rina open both rings even when she was washing or cooking. Cookout. Chris' memory goes back to the times when Rina was still in this apartment. Although he did not want to admit directly, but his stomach and tongue could not deny that he enjoyed the food that his wife cooked. They almost never had dinner together, but Rina seemed to always try to be able to accompany and serve every time Chris ate, whatever salarut.
Come to think of it, Chris is almost always looking forward to being able to go home and enjoy his wife's cooking. As much as possible he refused various dinner invitations from his work partners just to be able to return home immediately. By the time she came home, Lina would only welcome her in front of the sofa and prepare food for her. After that, his wife will enter the guest room or deliberately busy herself with other things, and only returned to the dining room when Chris was already in his room. Ever since that night's quarrel, Rina did seem to want to avoid her.
Flashback 3 months ago.
Chris and Lina walked into the apartment with a similarly sour face. They had just returned from Chris' mother's house, and Chris was very unhappy with the conversation that took place over dinner there. Closing the apartment door loudly, Chris turned towards Rina. In the middle room, they faced each other. Chris looked at his wife sharply and accusingly, while his wife seemed to feel guilty.
"What do you mean?"
Chris' voice sounded heavy and deep. He tries not to get carried away by emotions, and this is what is feared by Rina because Chris is a very rational man. He judges things based on what he sees or hears, and not how he feels. Lina felt she was dealing with a judge rather than a husband. Every time they quarreled, Lina should be able to give a clear and firm argument to her husband. He can not only confront with his heart, but also with his brain.
While Chris himself is currently really trying to hold back his emotions. The meeting with his family made him feel sick. Because of his wife's words, question after question was even thrown by his mother and sisters. Chris was too lazy to answer, because this was never thought of by him at all. His own wife at that time even fled to the kitchen, on the grounds of taking food.
Lina knew at that moment that she should take responsibility for her words, but instead left her bewildered husband.
Taking a hard breath, the woman tried to answer carefully.
"I-I, I'm just answering your question."
"Just answer, huh?" Chris asked with a sigh.
He began to move closer to his wife. As Chris took one step forward, Rina would take two steps back and on until her wife was cornered by the pantry table in the kitchen. Rina began to feel afraid, however, Chris' body size was twice as large and heavier than her. Her height was only limited to Chris' chin, and she knew that if determined then her husband could make her enter the hospital just by swinging one hand just like that.
If the atmosphere was different, maybe Lina would not feel afraid. She was also quite sure that her husband would not be that hard to physically hurt her. But the face and body of her husband who looks creepy at this time makes his guts hide somewhere.
"Ch-, Chris, don't come any closer."
Lina's voice started to shake. But her husband still did not stop to approach her, even though Lina was already cornered to the edge of the table.
"Don't come any closer, Chris!"
Lina's great-granddaughter with both hands forming a small fist in front of her chest, which somehow looks funny to Chris. He didn't think at all, did his wife think he was going to hurt her? So stupid!
Right now, their distance only stayed as long as Chris' arm.
"What do you want, Chris?"
Lina frantically looked for a way to escape. She was really starting to fear her husband and felt foolish to dare to challenge him.
"My wish is that you keep your mouth shut when dealing with mamah."
Chris answered coldly while pointing at his wife's face.
"A-I just want to help us both, Chris."
Lina started to give an explanation. She wanted her husband to understand her meaning at that time.
"You know your mom will never stop asking questions. Every time we go there, that's all he asks."
Feeling a little at ease as her husband was still silent on the spot, she asked hesitantly.
"Or-or, don't you want it?"
Lina's explanation was initially quite acceptable to Chris, but her forehead started to wrinkle when she heard her last sentence. In his brain was already beginning to form assumptions that he did not like, but he tried to just stand still and wait.
When she saw her husband was still motionless, Rina tried to continue after replenishing the oxygen in her lungs.
"I-I know that we never talk about children. I'm sorry I didn't ask you for your opinion first and I said straight away that we don't plan on having one."
Lina looked at Chris more intensely, her gaze full of determination. His heart was pounding, yet he was excited. She wants to express her heart to her husband now and now. She felt that during the months of her marriage, Rina felt that now was the right time to try to go further in her relationship with Chris.
"I know that our relationship didn't start off on a good basis. But-"
"I want to try Chris. If you want a child, I can try it. We can go to the doctor and ask"
As the wife's words began to enter and digest her brain, Chris looked in disbelief at Rina and cut her off.
"A minute, a minute."
Chris began to retreat away from his wife while raising both of his hands.
"You think our marriage will last forever?"
He shook his head while chuckling.
"You don't think I'm gonna love you, do you? You never thought that we wouldn't get divorced, did you?"
Rina looked shocked at Chris' words. Frankly, he never expected that Chris would love him as easily as he fell in love with Chris. However, he did not expect that Chris was actually going to close himself to the possibility considering they were almost married for 1 year. At least, she had hoped her husband would still try to accept her as her life companion. The words of divorce from her husband left her stunned and incredulous she would ever hear it.
Does Chris really not want to see his efforts to be a good wife? Was she too naive and blind to fall in love with her husband? What is the effort he has been doing all this time? Or is it him who does not want to see that Chris did never consider their marriage real? The questions that flooded his mind made Rina could only fall silent.
Chris suddenly flipped his body and picked up the document that was in the living room. Lina had been aware of the existence of the document since noon and thought it was Chris's office documents left behind, which her personal assistant would usually take.
Her husband reached out the document to Lina and shook his hand, intending his wife to retrieve it. With hesitation, Rina took it and looked at the contents. He tried to suppress his shock and swallowed the bitter taste that was suddenly felt in his mouth. It is: The Divorce Agreement. The document consists of various chapters that cannot be digested by Rina's brain. He can't think right now.
Seeing that his wife was silent, Chris decided to continue his words earlier.
"Sign the letter when you feel ready. I know your father's been getting the best treatment in months. After the divorce, I promise to continue to support you and also help your father's treatment. You will not lack."
"Ta-But, why?"
Lina ventured to ask, after she was able to find her voice again.
Chris looked at Rina quite surprised and raised his eyebrows. Is his wife that naive? Did he really think that they would be bound forever? Or perhaps as he had expected, his wife was a greedy woman!
"You're really asking why?"
Chris tried to control his emotions and continued after taking a deep breath.
"Listen, we both know what kind of marriage we're in now. I don't know about you, but I can't play anymore. I think 1 year is more than enough to have this pretend marriage. And I think it's more than enough for my family to help you and your father."
Hearing that, Rina's heart felt pain but she did not want to lose before trying. He still hopes and believes that his marriage with Chris can still be saved. He put the document on the dinner table and tried to act as if Chris' actions were not breaking his heart. She looked at her husband bravely.
"Chris, who said I was just pretending to be your wife? Maybe that's what you do, but not with me."
Lina was really serious with her every word. Seeing the intimidating look of her husband, she tried to stay upright and clasped her hands tightly in front of her chest. His feet began to tremble at this moment.
"I've been serious about my role as your wife. I always try to cook for you. I also helped clean your house. When we went to your house, I tried to play a good wife in front of your family."
Lina felt unacceptable if her efforts these few months would be in vain. With breath beginning to hunt, Lina continued her defense.
"I even want to try having a child with you. So what's lacking, Chris? Tell me so I can fix myself!"
Hearing the words of his wife, Chris suddenly laughed loudly. The look that initially did not believe in his wife, slowly began to turn harassing. He did not think that his wife thought that he was so foolish as to believe it. Just because his wife often cooks and acts well in front of his family, then he will forget just like that if his wife from the beginning aims to target the money?
Chris actually never wanted to talk about this matter with his wife. He was still trying to accept this situation with a cold head. He is willing to accept Rina and help his family, but he also does not expect that it will last forever. When his mother was satisfied to see him married, he also wanted to end this relationship immediately. Especially now that he began to feel tormented must continue to live together in one roof with women who can not be touched.
Although he actually wanted to, but Chris did not want to use Rina for his personal satisfaction because they did not love each other, and he was still too afraid to try. Therefore, he really wanted to end his relationship with Rina immediately especially when he started to realize there was little interest in the woman.
"You think I'm looking for a maid? I could find someone else to cook and clean the house, without having to be a wife. If that's the criterion, I'll marry Megan's mother later."
"Girl!" Rina slightly screamed at her husband's impudent words.
"You realize who you are? You married me just because you needed money! You even approached mamah just for that purpose! So don't tell me you have the qualities to be a wife!"
Chris's intonation that began to rise resuscitated Rina. She regrets fueling her husband's anger by bringing up this sensitive issue at an inappropriate time. She began to fear that her husband would utter words she did not want to hear.
"Chris, please-"
Chris would not listen. Right now he was really feeling angry, angry at the circumstances that put him in a difficult position. The man tried not to scream. His nostrils seemed to expand and his chest rose and fell as he tried to take a deep breath. He was still trying to restrain himself from exploding in front of his wife.
"And this-"
He pointed to the leftovers from the meal earlier this afternoon and slammed the dishes hard enough on the dinner table, until they spilled out of order.
"It's just cooking! You don't have to be smart to play house here. I never asked you to cook or clean the house."
The thing Chris did made Rina startled and could only stare at the nanar. Her husband, though cold and gluttonous, had never been this rude. And all of Chris' words seemed to throw him back in the real world. That all this time she was just playing house-housing with her husband. Couldn't her husband see how seriously Rina was trying to carry out her role? Rina's face began to blush, and she could only hope that Chris did not see how much his words had ruined her.
"Chris..."
Rina's voice sounded weak as she tried to defend herself one last time.
"And you know-"
Chris cut it back and in a threatening position, pointed at Lina's face with his index finger.
"I married you because you asked. Because he feels sorry for you, and so he can help you without asking too many questions from others. So, don't ever expect that you'll be able to fit into my family."
The deg!
And the last words of Chris was successful in crushing the hope of Rina who still left perfectly.
"Last, I never intended to touch you. So don't ever bring up the issue of children again!"
