CHAPTER VI - Chris' Regret (2)

That morning Chris woke up feeling refreshed. He felt his body fitter than ever before. A flash of memory the night before, made Chris immediately see the position next to him and find it empty. A little confused, he also looked around his room and saw nothing strange. In a hurry Chris put on his trousers and rushed out of the room. He immediately went to Lina's room and knocked on her door, but there was no answer. Worried about his wife's condition, he opened it and found the room empty. The bed looks good too.

Increasingly confused, Chris heads to the kitchen and finds the same situation. Everything was fine and looked normal. He also saw that the trash was empty and clean. There were no signs that there had been celebrations or scraps of messy food. This makes Chris hold his head, and begin to wonder if the incident last night was a dream? Although the situation in the kitchen looks no problem, but when looking around he realizes there is something lacking but does not know what.

Sitting on the edge of his bed, Chris sighed. He believes that last night was real, but the situation around him suggests otherwise. What exactly is going on? Realizing if you have to go to the office, Chris rushed to take a shower. When rubbing his body, he felt pain in his arms and back. There is an elongated red mark, and although not deep but still feels painful when exposed to soapy water. Whatisthis? Curious, he checked it on the bathroom glass and was surprised to find some wounds were still reddened, which looked like scratches.

The mark on his body makes Chris more convinced by the incident last night. After finishing his bath, Chris immediately got dressed and looked for his phone. He looked up his wife's number and realized that he had never kept it. Guilt-stricken, he contacted Rich. After getting his wish, Chris was waiting for an answer from his wife impatiently. Lina just answered him on the 2nd call.

"Hello."

Sounds soft and a slightly muffled voice.

"Rl-, Rina. It's Chris." Chris's voice was choked. He didn't know what to say to his wife.

After a moment of silence, the voice on his phone came back.

"What's up, Chris?"

"I-i"

Chris was confused where to start, but he had to say something.

"Where are you? Why didn't you have breakfast this morning?"

Only aware of what he said, Chris cursed his stupidity.

The question just now seemed to blame his wife for not preparing breakfast. Though the point is not like that, but because he is not used to communicating with his wife naturally, then he is also confused when it comes to telling his true intentions. In his heart, he really felt worried about his wife's condition but was still too embarrassed to ask.

There was no answer yet, Chris only heard a slow breathing sound on the other end of the phone.

In another part of town, Rina was struggling to hold back her cries. After last night's incident, could the husband still ask for his breakfast ration?

Rina's focus was shifted when she heard her name had been called. Currently, he is in one of the hospitals in his city. He intends to check himself because of the events of the previous night. Rina decided to prevent her from becoming pregnant because of the incident. No matter how much love Rina has for Chris, she realizes she does not want her future child to grow from the results of a traumatic event for her parents.

"Rina?"

A little impatient Chris asked, and he was curious about the location where Rina was when he heard the call that seemed to be in the hospital.

"I'll ask Megan's mom to prepare breakfast. I have to go now."

After that the phone was cut off and Chris could not call Rina back all day.

Chris' concentration looked chaotic that day. Several times he did not focus when checking documents, which made him have to repeat his work many times. Fortunately, there was no important meeting to be held. This condition also makes him forced to work overtime and return home rather late.

When he got to the apartment, Chris went straight to his wife's room and knocked on the door. The result was still no answer, and the condition of the room was the same as this morning. It was as if Rina did not return home, even though the clock had shown at 21:00 more. Chris automatically contacted his wife again, and still could not connect. Chris suspects that Rina has blocked his number. What possible?

Question after question was still spinning in his mind, when suddenly the apartment door opened. Turning around, Chris saw his wife enter the living room and looked surprised to see her husband in front of her room. At first glance, Chris can see the look of fear from his wife's eyes and guilt back attack him. He tried to step closer to Rina, but seeing his wife retreat so Chris decided not to force himself and stopped at a distance that felt safe.

Chris shows the phone in his hand and says, "Your number can't be reached."

"sorry. I turned it off."

After turning her phone back on, Rina looked at Chris and asked him why he was looking for her. Throughout the day, he conducted examinations and consultations with the obstetrician. He also took the time to come to the hospital to visit his father and get unexpected news. His troubled mind and coupled with other problems, made him decide not to turn on his phone first that day.

Relieved that his wife was not avoiding him, Chris asked for an explanation from Rina about what she did all day in the hospital. For a moment Rina seemed hesitant to give her true explanation, and finally decided to say that she only visited her father there. She has no power to argue with Chris over a new issue, as she also has no idea what her husband thinks of the child issue considering they had a pretty big fight some time ago. Rina thought, it is better that she avoids new problems if the problems that are in front of her own eyes have not been resolved.

To give her strength, Lina also leaned her hand on the sofa. His position looked relaxed, but Chris knew his wife remained wary of him. Seeing that her husband was silent and did not comment on her explanation, Rina decided that their conversation was over.

"Any more, Chris? If not, I'll go to the room."

This was the second time on the same day that Chris heard his wife's cold, formal tone of voice.

All this time, it was always him who tried to keep his distance from his wife but now, Chris felt it was Rina who started to stay away from him. In the past, even though they had quarreled, his wife had never been cold to him and was still trying to serve him. But now, Chris felt that Lina was starting to not care about him. His wife did not even ask him if he had eaten or not. His heart was agitated. He did not like the change in his wife's behavior.

"Chris?"

Lina began to impatiently face her husband's unclear attitude. She was already facing a bad day, and her husband's behavior began to provoke her emotions.

"Hmmm, hit on last night" Chris starts but is instantly cut off by his wife.

"Regarding last night, don't think about it. It's already happened and not to be regretted."

Rina tried to answer firmly. He did not want to bring it back and immediately had to forget the bad event.

Clutching the sofa he was holding, he continued, "Just take it-"

Chris waited for Rina to continue, but his wife fell silent. His eyes looked towards the dining room. In her heart, Lina really regretted her stupidity. Why would he have trouble preparing all that if it turns out Chris hates him. Whatever she did would still have no price in her husband's eyes. Recalling the events that happened to her last night, it made Rina's eyes start to water.

"Rina?" Chris asked carefully.

Hearing Chris' voice, Rina blinked her eyes and tried to cast away the shadows last night that still haunted her. He looked at the figure of the husband in front of him. Her husband is handsome and looks perfect. For other women, maybe being able to marry a guy like Chris was their dream. But for Lina, her dream is to marry a man who loves her, more than she loves him. That's who he is, because he's so afraid to be left out. But the truth is, now he loves a man who clearly hates him. Maybe this is karma because he is too greedy.

In the past, Rina had a sister but died in an accident. At that time, Rina felt as an older sister who failed to protect her sister. It took years for him and his parents to recover from the grief, and soon his mother caught up with him. Experiencing the loss of 2 people who are very dear to him makes Rina a person who may look tough on the outside, but actually he is fragile on the inside. Currently, he only has his father and the information that the doctor said last afternoon has the potential to ditch his hope of recovery. If her father leaves her, Rina has no idea how and what she must survive to survive.

But of course, Rina was not a weak woman and she did not want to live as a loser, at least in the eyes of others. While holding her head up, Lina had finally decided what steps she would take later. She then passed through the body of her husband confidently and headed for her bedroom. Before closing the door to his room in front of Chris, he said coldly.

"Well that's the interest payment on my debt, which has been delayed."

Back to the present.

Remembering the words of Rina that night made Chris' heart throb again in pain. He knew that he had physically wounded his wife, but what his wife said at the time bore a greater wound in Chris' heart without admitting it. He recalled that after returning to his own room, he could not sleep until the morning just thinking about the words his wife had spoken. He felt like he was a fucking husband. Several times he tried to speak from heart to heart with Lina, but his wife always avoided him for various reasons.

While looking at the white paper in front of him, Chris began to worry about his own feelings. He tried to think more objectively when studying the words and behavior of his wife so far. If indeed Rina is after Chris' money, why does his wife not bring along various items that Chris has given her? Lina even clearly rejected Chris's division of property. And if indeed his wife intends to disappear pretending to provoke him, he will not be as brave as that to directly sign their divorce papers. Has he misjudged his wife?

His mind was open little by little, making Chris realize 1 thing that he began to regret his decision to ever submit a divorce request to his wife.
