Susuk Mayit:
Maybe if there are people who happen to cross the road Tanjung Sari, they will not notice a house located on the side of the road, because there is nothing interesting from the house.
The paint of the house has faded, there are two poles as a buffer on the front, also two wooden windows that are left open even though the day is getting darker. In his courtyard, stood lushly and shady a rambutan tree whose fruit was never picked. It is allowed to ripen and rot away all year round.
On the terrace of the house there are two wooden chairs and a table that is rarely occupied. The house is located on the side of the road so that everyone who passes will think that the house seems always quiet even though there are actually two residents inside. The occupants of the house were Sarminah, an old woman who lay ill for many years, and Atiah the faithful servant took care of her.
But today unlike any ordinary day, there was a luxury sedan parked in the courtyard of the house. Not usually Farah visited so soon, regularly he came once a month to see his great-grandfather and also to pay Atiah. Farah is the only Sarminah family who still cares about her.
After Sarminah's son died, no one else would take care of him other than Farah. They had grown tired of taking care of Sarminah who lay dying for so many years. Sarminah was very old, but somehow the death did not come to pick her up.
Everyday, he just lay on the bed. About eating, drinking, even urinating he did on his bed. The maid who took care of Sarminah had changed people and only Atiah was the most comfortable caring for the old grandmother.
He worked alone to care for Sarminah in the house for five years. But today he resigned. That is what makes Farah confused because there is rarely anyone like Atiah who wants to work like this.
In Sarminah's room, Farah tries to persuade her not to resign. He even offered a double raise, but Atiah's decision was unanimous. He still wants to quit his job. Many times Atiah asked for maap because he could not accept a salary offer from Farah. While Farah herself is unlikely to be able to take care of her great-grandfather because she is very busy with her work. After offering a raise of up to three times, he finally gave up.
Surprisingly, when Farah asked why Atiah wanted to quit her job, she did not want to explain. His face looked anxious and wanted to leave the house immediately. Farah took out an envelope containing Atiah's monthly salary and severance pay. Without much further ado, after receiving the money, Atiah immediately resigned. Farah drove him to the porch. After Atiah left, Farah closed the door and exhaled heavily. He was confused as to where to find a replacement for Atiah.
Farah stepped into her great-grandmother's room. On the bed, Sarminah lay quietly. His eyes were closed, his chest rising up indicating that he was still alive. Farah looked at her great-grand hair, it was perfectly white and looked longer than ever since Farah had seen her. Sarminah's face was very wrinkled, both her lips sank into her mouth, her neck skin was waving, and both of her legs were emaciated dry.
Usually if Sarminah feels hungry, wants to pee or thirst, her eyes must open and then moan like the sound of a buffalo being slaughtered, giving a sign that Sarminah wants to be served. For the matter of eating, for years Sarminah only ate a scourge of biscuits that were splashed with water then the maid who took care of it would pour the food into Sarminah's mouth. The maid had to open Sarminah's mouth first.
When Farah was looking at Sarminah, suddenly the grandmother looked up, her eyes open. Farah understood that, immediately she checked her great-grandfather's butt, but it was still dry. Pampersnya has not leaked because this morning Atiah put it three layers.
“Mbok want what?” Farah asked with a smile on Sarminah's face.
“Haus, yes?” Farah grabbed a glass of water from the small table beside Sarminah's bed. He scoops the water.
However, when Farah poured it into Sarminah's mouth, the water was spewed.
“Mbok hungry?” Still when Farah poured food into Sarminah's mouth, the grandmother slowly spat it out again.
Farah wiped her long hair, confused what her great-grandmother wanted. He kept moaning no nonsense. His voice was even reflected to the wall of his room. In confusion, he reached into a mobile phone, intending to contact another relative. But, all of his relatives no one cared, they instead told Farah to inject Sarminah dead because it was tired of taking care of it again.
Sarminah has been taken to the hospital several times, but the disease does not heal while the hospital costs swell. Finally they brought Sarminah home and told others to take care of her.
When Sarminah was still moaning, suddenly a gong sound was heard. The sound was heard only once. Indeed, next to the Sarminah room there is a special room to store old items belonging to Sarminah. Farah rushed to check what was in the next room, she was surprised who had been beating the gong even though it was quiet in the room. Instantly Farah recalled about the reason Atiah had stopped, what was it exactly? Why does Atiah look so scared?
One day before, as usual every night Atiah grinded biscuits for Sarminah. That night it was raining heavily, lightning flashed, a burst of light pecking at the old wall. A radio was left on, broadcasting Atiah's favorite songs.
Atiah's head nodded while singing in a soft voice. He poured water little by little on a small bowl of crackers and then stirred until smooth. When he was finished, he went to Sarmninah's room. And how shocked he was when he saw Sarminah suddenly standing facing the window.
Sarminah did not answer. Atiah smiled hesitantly, her heart was mixed, there was joy, wonder, and at the same time fear. It had been a long time that Sarminah lay, and it was only now that Atiah saw her standing. Sarminah's hair is long waist. The hair was all white, it happened that Sarminah was wearing a negligee that was also white. The shadow of Sarminah is lost arising highlighted by lightning.
“Corpse skewers,” light Sarminah. Atiah heard the voice of Sarminah.
He was confused as to what Sarminah meant by saying that.
“Corpse stitches? What Mbok means, huh?” Atiah approached slowly. The lightning continues to glide.
“Kill me...,” Sarminah again said strangely. Even asking to be killed.
“Mbok?” Atiah smiled, slowly raising her arms to touch Sarminah's shoulder.
His hand managed to touch that shoulder, feeling the arch of his bones. Understandably, Sarminah's body only lives bone and skin. Very thin and very dry. Even though his shoulder had been touched, Sarminah did not turn away. He stood facing the window whose curtain was open.
“Mbok, eat first yuk. I've prepared food for Mbok.”
“Mbok?” continued Atiah.
His body was like a statue, unable to be moved. While Atiah was trying to communicate with Sarminah, a gamelan sound was heard in the next room. His voice mingled with angklung, xylophone, and gong accompaniment.
All of these tools belong to Sarminah, has long been abandoned in the next room. Atiah never cleaned it, many cobwebs wrapped around the equipment.
Just imagine, who are these nights playing those old tools? Atiah's getting scared. During his time at work, he had never once experienced such strange things. Atiah hesitated out of the room, towards the source of the voice.
The room door was pushed slowly, Atiah's chest went up and down, her forehead was already sweating. The creaking of the long-unoiled door hinges sounded loud. How surprised Atiah when he saw many men who were busy playing gamelan in the room.
All men look foreign. Where did they come from? Why are they in this room? Atiah scrunched his forehead, and as he was about to turn back, stood a beautiful young man approaching Atiah. He was wearing a yellow batik pattern blangkon, black pants only feet. There was a purple scarf around the man's neck.
He smiled as he approached Atiah. Then the shawl was tied to his neck, slowly Atiah was led into the room. The sound of gamelan is getting timid, Atiah is tricked. He was unconscious, his eyes blank and his body dancing with the handsome man.
Atiah like entering into a coil of light, immediately he was surprised to see himself on a stage show ronggeng. The crowd watched it from below while cheering calling out the name of Atiah.
He felt his clothes while astonished, Atiah found himself dressed like a ronggeng, kebaya, batik sarong, his hair dikonde, there were jasmine flowers in his back hair. A scarf was tucked in his neck. Where is this? Atiah confusion.
SERIATE..
Looking forward to the next story ...
