Shaykhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said: “ini is the reason why it is recommended to breathe 3 times when drinking” (Majmu’ Al Fatawa, 32/208). So it is clear that this is the law of the sunnah, not until it is mandatory. Because the original law of the actions of the Prophet Shallallahu’alaihi Wasallam is sunnah.

But it should be noted, that breathing referred to here is not breathing or breathing in a glass or drinking place. But what it means is outside the glass. Because in another hadith Rasulullah Shallallahu’alaihi Wasallam said:

إذا شَرِبَ أحدُكم فلا يَتَنَفَّسُ في الإناءِ

“if one of you drinks, do not breathe in a vessel (drinking place)” (HR. Al Bukhari 153, Muslim 267).

So the trick: sip water, then stop and breathe out outside the glass, then sip again, then stop and breathe out outside the glass, then sip again, then sip again, then stop and breathe out outside the glass, done.
