The temple is dedicated to the bodhisattva Kannon (Avalokitesvara). According to legend, a statue of Kannon was discovered in the Sumida River in 628 BC by two fishermen, the brothers Hinokuma Hamanari and Hinokuma Takenari. Their village chief, Hajino Nakamoto, acknowledged the sanctity of the statue and enshrined it by turning his house into a small temple in Asakusa so that the villagers could worship Kannon.

In the courtyard there was a tree that was hit by a bomb in the air raid, and it had grown back on the bark of an old tree and was a symbol similar to the temple itself.
