It is a form of respect for people who have given knowledge (Guru) and his family. It is not a cult, because the Kyai himself did not say so. It is only a scientific tradition or some people who seek knowledge. Which in pesantren refers to the book ‘Adabul ta’limul muta’alim’ or some people who are looking for knowledge.

How the attitude and morals (Batiniyah behavior) and Adab (External behavior) of people who seek knowledge so that the knowledge is barokah and useful. Not just increasing knowledge, but the science really can lead people to moral behavior karimah (Good morals ).

“Kalo have something do not keep too close, teach others to make your knowledge useful.” Say the Kyai to Jafar.

Jafar gasped in shock at his kyai speech, he felt he was being observed outside by the kyai.

Of course it cannot be swallowed raw, but only as an allusion to the importance of appreciating a teacher. Even though the student becomes smarter than his own teacher still has to ‘honor’ the teacher.
