Preeclampsia is a complication of pregnancy characterized by high blood pressure (hypertension) and signs of organ damage, for example kidney damage indicated by high levels of protein in the urine (proteinuria). Preeclampsia is also often known as toxemia or pregnancy-induced hypertension.
Symptoms of preeclampsia usually appear as the gestational age enters the 20th week or more (most common gestational age 24-26 weeks), until shortly after the baby is born. Preeclampsia that is not realized by the pregnant woman can develop into eclampsia, a serious medical condition that threatens the safety of pregnant women and their fetuses.
Until now, the main cause of preeclampsia is still not known with certainty. Some experts believe that preeclampsia begins with abnormalities in the placenta, which is an organ that serves to receive blood supply and nutrients for the baby while still in the womb.
In women with preeclampsia, the growth and development of placental blood vessels is impaired. Blood vessels become narrower than they should be, and react differently to hormonal stimuli. The condition causes a reduced amount of blood that can be drained.
As for some factors that can increase the risk of a pregnant woman experiencing preeclampsia, including:
First pregnancy.
Have had preeclampsia in a previous pregnancy.
Nutritional deficiencies.
Are suffering from certain diseases, such as antiphospholipid syndrome, diabetes, lupus, hypertension, or kidney disease.
Contains more than one fetus.
The baby in the current pregnancy has a different father than the previous pregnancy.
Pregnancy after 10 years with previous pregnancy.
Pregnant under the age of 20 or over the age of 40.
Obesity during pregnancy with a body mass index of 25 or more.
Have a family history of preeclampsia.
