Small Fortress

The tenth year of the monster era.

Somewhere in Wonosobo district of Central Java Province of the State of Indonesia there is a small fortress built by a group of citizens. (Regencies and cities are called districts in this novel)

Before the monster era there were several villages near the small fortress. But now the village has been destroyed to the ground by monster attacks and the effects of nuclear weapons and natural disasters.

At first a group of residents made a shelter in a cave found on the wrong hill. The location of the cave is quite hidden, with the room in the cave is quite spacious and there is a natural water source. In the area in front of the cave mouth residents built a stone wall made sober.

Some traps were set around the cave. Residents also equip themselves with makeshift weapons as a means of defense.

There were arrows, wooden spears and Molotov cocktails made simply from oil-filled glass bottles and wicks.

There are also several firearms and automatic machine guns that are accidentally found by residents following ammunition. Automatic machine guns of medium caliber are being obtained by citizens from military vehicles damaged by fighting against monsters.

Initially, a group of eighty-three people with twenty-one of them women and fourteen children.

This group of citizens was led by a thirty-two-year-old man named Sena. Although his age is still quite young but Sena is able to lead the citizen group well.

The group led by Sena increased by the joining of residents from surrounding village villages who managed to survive. Now the total number of members of the Sena group is one hundred and six people.

Sena chose an area that has a flat land surface with an area of approximately eighteen hectares. The new area he chose was not far from the location of the cave where he currently lives. The location is also near a small water source that flows from the mountains. This place is also on a plateau higher than the surrounding so that it can monitor the surrounding area clearly.

Sena plans to build a protective wall into two areas. The first area is planned as a place for farming and raising. The second area is the main area where residents live.

For the first area will be built a wall three meters high and two meters thick as the outermost defense, built also four observation towers as high as five meters at the four corners. One command tower was built just above the gate.

Then in it which is also the boundary between the first area and the second area built a five-meter-high wall with three meters thick as a defense. The second wall also built six towers, four towers at each corner and two towers at the two entrances

The second area which is the residential area will be able to accommodate up to six hundreds of people.

With the royong and the help of some modern equipment they managed to find the fort can be completed within seventeen months.

The members of the Sena group have now increased to three hundred and eighty-four.

They named their present residence the Little Fortress.

With protected agricultural areas they can grow some crops more safely. They also raise some livestock.

Thus the food needs of Sena group members are fulfilled and even excessive. Excess foodstuffs they preserve and store as preparation for unexpected times.

To meet the needs of electrical energy they use technology that includes ancient. The source of electricity generation comes from wood-fired steam engine generators.

Fuel oil becomes a fairly rare item and difficult to obtain. Many mining and petroleum refining centers were destroyed by wars with monsters and natural disasters. That causes fuel oil to be scarce and hard to come by.

Most of the industrial centers were destroyed. Technological developments have suffered setbacks. The impact felt by humans during the war against monsters was many times worse than the impact of the first and second world wars combined.

But hope remains. Limited energy sources that have been the main choice are replaced by the use of new energy sources that are more environmentally friendly.

That new source of energy came from the energy crystal stone that was inside the bowels of the earth. And the crystal core that came from the monster body.

Originally these two types of energy crystals could only be used by cultivators to increase their level of strength. The profession of animal hunters for consumption is rife and widely used as the main profession of some people despite having a very large risk.

These hunters work in groups. Usually they hunt in groups with more than five members.

Animal hunters are different from monster hunters. If animal hunters are ordinary people who hunt wild animals to meet food needs then monster hunters are usually trained people. Monster hunters work to carry out missions to exterminate monsters.

The equipment and weapons of monster hunters are more complete and sophisticated than animal hunters.Monster hunters also have skill certification and division of level classes based on the level of power set by the official monster hunter association.

Most of the monster hunters are members of a monster hunting guild. However there were also solo and independent monster hunters who did not join the guild.

Unlike the monster hunters, the wild animal hunters join a hunting association. There is no ranking system here. The association only regulates the market price of wild animal meat and helps distribute the meat to areas in need.
