[IN THE MODERN WORLD 2356
...
In the year 2356. The Devourers first appeared.
A scientific team is investigating the newly discovered solar system. On one of the planets, they found a group of very aggressive organisms. All organisms share the same features, black skin, a very formidable life force, devouring various forms of energy, and being very aggressive towards other living things.
Half of the scientific team died because of this new species. The Human Confederation classified the planet with a 'S' danger level and banned access to it.
It was the beginning of the nightmare of mankind.
Not long after, humanity discovers that the organisms they discover are just the tip of an iceberg.
Planet by planet, system by system. All the planets that lie outside the solar system are filled with eaters. In addition, they are far more technologically advanced than mankind had expected.
Able to think intelligently, with strong combat abilities, and able to travel interstellar. The Devourers, as mankind calls the collective group of organisms that share the same characteristics, become mankind's worst enemy.
This is not the first time humanity has come into contact with another interstellar civilization, but it is the first time the results have been so tragic. The Devourers seem obsessed with destroying and killing all other life forms that exist.
They're like locusts. Destroying everything that was blocking them. After they invade a planet, they kill all life forms in it including plants, and then, they leave it behind.
They are the destruction that incarnates.
Since then, mankind and the eater have fought hundreds of battles. But the eater wins most of the time. Many human colonies were lost, and dozens of planets fell in the hands of nightmare creatures.
There is no attempt to communicate with those who succeed. Humans are desperate as more and more planets are defeated.
Then hope appeared.
Valkyries, discovered by a group of scientists led by renowned bioengineer and ESPer Camila Norman.
They are humans who have turned into weapons. Each one was a weapon of mass destruction, capable of fighting the enemy of the fleet alone. The Valkyries became the guardian angels of mankind.
But the price of creating a Valkyrie is very high. Each Valkyrie is an AI in the female body. In other words, female ESPers were sacrificed to make weapons.
In addition, not all ESPers have the potential to become Valkyries. Only one in ten thousand female ESPers can become a Valkyrie.
And Valkyries have a glaring weakness.
They are machines in the human body. Unable to think like humans, they were at a disadvantage against a cunning enemy. In less than two years, the Devourers had found a method to deal with the Valkyrie without suffering too many casualties.
The war had been in a stalemate for several years. Until humanity makes another surprising discovery.
Humanity is not the only civilization that fights food eaters.
Dozens of different interstellar civilizations face the Devourer threat at the same time. That civilization gave humans more information about this terrifying race.
The Devourers they faced were the weakest of the group. Some eaters are large enough to devour planets to absorb their core energy. There were even rumors of an eater swallowing a star.
The night devourers are indestructible. Their cells can survive in extreme conditions. Temperatures below 100 °C cannot destroy them, and they can survive freezing for many years. Even the void of space could not kill them. Once the Devourer falls in space, it will enter a state of hibernation that allows it to last up to 100 years. And if they manage to land on another planet suitable for life, they could start reproducing again.
Finally, humanity learns about the reason eaters hunt other races.
The soul is the favorite food of the food-eaters.
Scientists have discovered the existence of souls many years ago. Not much is known about it, it's just that it's a very special kind of energy found in every living thing, from insects to plants.
Creatures with more energy are usually more dotted in certain areas, and that also affects human ESP potential.
And this energy is what most food eaters want.
Apparently, soul energy can accelerate the evolution of eaters, making them stronger and smarter.
After mankind obtained this information, they realized that the situation was more bleak than they thought. Humanity tries to ask for help from other civilizations, but they are all too busy trying to save their own to help. The best that was achieved was an agreement to freely share technological advances with some races, but even that required a lot of compromise.
Ten years after the start of the war, a giant fleet of eaters invaded human territory. The fleet appeared suddenly, and no one could foresee them. More than ten planets fall in just one year.
Given the situation, the government enlisted the help of the most famous scientists and ESPers of the confederation. They want to reunite them on a planet to work in a secret weapon.
But unfortunately, the eaters learned it.
The spacecraft carrying the scientists and ESPers are attacked by enemy fleets and more than fifty percent of them die or disappear.
Including Camilla Norman.
Humanity cannot recover from that blow.
Fifty years later, eighty percent of humanity has been lost.
Seventy years later, human civilization has largely disappeared.
Only a few humans have survived after escaping to a distant system, hoping to forget the nightmare that lasted nearly a hundred years.
...
One day, a star falls from the sky, and a poor little country is destroyed, burned to the ground.
This event shocked the world. Many famous witches and scholars went to investigate it, but other than the ruins of a country, they failed to find anything.
A few weeks later, the witches concluded that 'starfall' was a natural phenomenon and it would not happen again in a while. According to them, it was normal to start falling once in a while.
There is nothing to worry about, they said.
Until Blight shows up.
Creatures without a terrifying mana that devoured everything they touched.
In one day, they ate a small town. Within a week, half the country was destroyed, and within a month, a fifth of the continent had been destroyed.
They devoured mana and swallowed souls. Magic was almost useless against them, and only the strongest magicians were able to cast spells powerful enough to threaten monsters.
Before a terrifying enemy threatens to destroy all life on the planet, the five major races form an Alliance to fight them.
Humans, Beastmen, Elves, Demons, and Beasts. The race sends their strongest combatants and their most powerful army to face the monsters. For the first time in history, the five races joined hands.
The war was very hard. The number of deaths could be counted in the millions, and the countries that were destroyed surpassed ten.
Two-thirds of the world's power plants are killed in combat. They sacrifice their lives to stop Blight from advancing.
Finally, the gods sent oracles.
The Blight, another world invaders are rejected by mana. Only by annihilating them completely, turning their bodies into ashes could peace be restored to the world.
So, the gods made the greatest sacrifice possible.
Of each race, one god stepped forward to end the cursed plague.
The five gods fell on the day that many years later would become known as Godsfall.
Each of them used an extremely powerful magic spell in the territory affected by Blight, burning their own souls in the process and finally erasing every trace of Blight completely.
But the powerful magic used destroyed the ground completely. Where in a fifth of the world turns chaotic, makes the climate harsh and kills creatures unable to adapt.
Fearing the rise of Blight, the remaining gods create mountains to block access to that part of the world.
Abandoned Land.
So is his name.
A place forgotten by the gods, where only the damned creatures live.
Over time, the abandoned land turned into a place of seclusion. Penalties for criminals who cannot be executed. Where the world's trash is sent.
Later, his name changed to The Exiled Lands.
After the war, the world entered a period of peace. The sheer number of deaths was enough to stop even the most ambitious ruler from wanting war.
But at the same time, The Blight became the biggest taboo there was.
Quickly, people with no mana began to be discriminated against. In the first few years after the disaster, all children born without mana were killed. Not even their parents escaped.
They carried the curse of the hawar, they said.
Cursed children, so they are called.
The mothers drowned their children so that no one could find the curse. Fathers beheaded their sons to obtain pardon.
The churches preached against them. Kill the devil's children, kill them, kill them!
Over the years, hundreds of children have been killed.
Until finally, a hundred years passed.
When Queen Skysword gave birth to twins, the entire palace celebrated.
But when the boy was examined for magic power, he was found to have no mana.
The king, in grief, killed all who knew it. He then creates a magical tool to hide the child's condition from the world and forces all the servants to swear a miraculous vow to never reveal the truth.
But even like that, rumors about the boy began to spread, and people began to hesitate.
Therefore, the king made a choice that he had been thinking about for many years.
When the prince was eleven years old, he suddenly disappeared.
It was reported as a sudden death, but some people knew the truth.
The kingdom had a cursed prince, and he was left in a land of exile.
