Jayabaya
The Maharaja of Jayabhaya was the King of Kediri who reigned around 1135-1157. His full title name is Sri Maharaja Sang Mapanji Jayabhaya Sri Warmeswara Madhusudana Awataranindita Suhtrisingha Parakrama Uttunggadewa.
Jayabhaya Government
The Jayabhaya government is considered the heyday of Kediri. Its historical relics include the Hantang inscription (1135), the Talan inscription (1136), and the Japanese inscription (1144), as well as the Kakawin Bharatayuddha (1157).
In the Hantang inscription, or commonly also called the Ngantang inscription, there is the motto Panjalu Jayati, which means Kedirimenang. This inscription was issued as a charter of endowment of grace to the Ngantang villagers who were loyal to Kediri during the war against Jenggala.
From the inscription can be known that Jayabhaya was the king who managed to defeat Janggala and reunite him with Kediri.
Jayabhaya's victory over the Behead was symbolized as the Pandawaatas Kaurawa victory in the Bharatayuddhayang kakawin composed by the Sedah and Panuluh masters in 1157.
Jayabhaya in Javanese Tradition
Jayabhaya's big name is recorded in the memory of Javanese people, so his name appears in Javanese literature Islamic Mataram era or afterwards as Prabu Jayabaya. Examples of manuscripts that allude to Jayabaya are Babad Tanah Jawi and Serat Aji Pamasa.
Jayabaya is the incarnation of Vishnu. His country is called Widarba which is the capital city in Mamenang. His father was Gendrayana, son of Judayana, son of Parikshit, son of Abhimanyu, son of Arjuna of the Pandavas.
Empress Jayabaya was named Dewi Sara. Born from him Jayamijaya, Dewi Pramesti, Dewi Pramuni, and Dewi Sasanti. Jayamijaya deposed the kings of Java, even to Majapahit and Mataram Islam. While Pramesti married Astradarma king of Yawastina, gave birth to Anglingdarma king of Malawapati.
Jayabaya abdicated at an old age. He is narrated moksha in Menang village, Pagu District, Kediri Regency. The location of the firecracker was saved by the locals and is still visited by many people today.
Prabu Jayabaya is a figure that is identical with the future prediction of the archipelago. There are several manuscripts that contain “Joyoboyo” Forecasts, including Jayabaya Musarar Fiber, Serat Pranitiwakya, and so on.
Narrated in Serat Jayabaya Musarar, one day Jayabaya studied with a cleric named Maolana Ngali Samsujen. From these scholars, Jayabaya got a picture of the state of Java Island since the time filled by Aji Saka until the arrival of the Day of Judgment.
From the name of the Jayabaya teacher above can be known that the fiber script was written in the era of Islamic development in Java. It is not known with certainty who the author of Jayabaya's prophecies was. It had become a habit of society at that time to obey the words of great figures. So, the scriptwriter also said that the prophecy was the direct speech of Prabu Jayabaya, a great king from Kadiri.
The great poet who is also a diviner from Surakarta named Ranggawarsita is often referred to as the author of Jayabaya's Divination texts. However, Ranggawarsita used to insert his name in the manuscripts of his writings, while the manuscripts of the Jayabaya Prophecy are generally anonymous.
Jayabaya forecast, is a prediction about the state of the archipelago at some time in the future. In the Jayabaya Forecast it is said, there will come a period full of disaster.
The mountains will erupt, the earth will shake, the sea and rivers will overflow. This will be a time of suffering. A time of arbitrariness and indifference. The time of the cunning reigns, and the good will be oppressed.
But, after the most difficult time, there will come a new age, an age full of splendor and glory. The Golden Age of Nusantara. And the new age will come after the coming of the Queen of Just, or Satria Piningit.
The Jayabaya prophecy was written hundreds of years ago, by a just and wise king in Mataram. The king was named Prabu Jayabaya (1135-1159). His predictions seem so compelling and are still observed by many hundreds of years after his death. Bung Karno also felt the need to comment on this prophecy.
"Lords of Judges, is it why the people always believe and wait for the arrival of the "Queen of Fair", is it why the word Prabu Jayabaya to this day still continues to ignite the hope of the people ? None other than because the hearts of the people who cry, inexhaustibly waiting, hoping for help to come. Like a man in darkness, he does not stop waiting and hoping for "When, when does the Sun rise?". (Soekarno, 1930, Indonesia Suing)
Jayabaya's prediction is quite phenomenal, many of his predictions that can be interpreted close to the current situation. Among them:
The coming of the pale-skinned nation that carries a stick that can kill from afar and the yellow-skinned nation of the North (the colonial era).
"kreto mlaku tampo jaran", "Prau mlaku ing nduwur awang", a chariot running without horses and a boat sailing above the clouds (cars and airplanes?)
The arrival of a disastrous era in the archipelago (Lindu ping pitu sedino, weak crooked, Pagebluk rupo-rupo), seven earthquakes a day, the ground breaking, disasters of all kinds.
And he even (possibly) also predicted global warming, "Akeh udan salah mongso", the coming of a time when the rains are wrong season.
The rise and fall of civilization has actually been analyzed by scientists, even since hundreds of years ago. Among them are Ibn Khaldun (Muqaddimah, 1337), Gibbon (Decline and Fall, 1776), Toynbee (through his book A Study of History), or Jared Diamond. People or nations can change. Humans can forget, and vice versa can also learn. Nations can rise, fall, and rise again.
There are also many theories about special humans who come to bring change. In the world, those people are often called "Prometheans", after the Greek god Prometheus who gave fire (enlightenment) to humans. Toynbee called it Creative Minorities. But they are not just “magic”-men, but people who have the mighty power, that is, the power of science, and the love of their people, their fellow men, and their God. See for example how many hadiths the Prophet Muhammad had about the importance of science. And note the continuation of Bung Karno's speech:
"As long as the intellectuals of Bumiputra have not been able to express the objections of his people, then the deeds of the dread (rebellion) are the proper execution of the indignities which are kept … against foolish attempts to govern the people without regard to their desires and interests…"
Satria Piningit, are people who care about their people, are highly educated, and have decided to do something about it. They are, and only they can fight the destruction, and finally raise civilization.
In the dark ages, there are always people learning. Some people forget there are always good people. Even if only one person. Sometimes, the damage actually burned his soul to do something. Learn, fight, sacrifice. Like the Prophet Muhammad who saw his people destroyed, or Sukarno who saw his people trampled. They fought to save their people. Promethean, the Queen of Justice who brought about the age of good.
Jayabaya prophecy may be understood scientifically, that humans and civilization can always rise, fall, and rise again. And maybe because Jayabaya realized humans could forget, he deliberately wrote this as a warning so that people do not forget. And that is one sign of wisdom of the Prabu Jayabaya. Perhaps, this is also the encouragement in humans to always be heartened, optimistic. That in the most difficult time though, one day will finally come also the Time of Awakening, the Great Awakening, the Golden Age of the Archipelago.
