GREEK GOD

GREEK GOD
Jupiter

A long time ago, when the world was much younger

rather than now, people tell and believe a lot of stories

beautiful things you or I have never seen. They

often speaking of a certain Mighty Being called Jupiter, or

Zeus, who was the king of heaven and earth; and they said that he was

often sat in the middle of the clouds on the very high mountain peak where he was

you can look down and see everything that is happening on earth

beneath it. He likes to ride storm clouds and throw burning lightning

to the right and to the left between the trees and the rocks; and he was so

so, so mighty that when he nodded, the earth shook,

the mountains shook and smoky, the sky turned black, and the sun

hiding face.

Jupiter has two brothers, both of them

very bad, but not as good as him. One of the names is

Neptune, or Poseidon, and he was king of the sea. He has a palace

the gold glittered deep beneath the deep sea caves where fish lived and corals

red grew; and whenever he got angry, the waves would rise as high as the mountain, and,

and the storm's winds will howl in fear, and the sea will try to lash

land; and people call him the Earth Shaker.

Jupiter's other brothers are

a sad pale-faced creature, whose kingdom is under the earth, in

where the sun never shines and where there is darkness and crying and

sadness all the time. His name was Pluto, or Aidoneus, and his country

called the Underworld, or the Land of the Shadow, or Hades. Folks

saying that whenever anyone dies, Pluto will send his emissary, or

The Shadow Leader, to bring that person into his kingdom that is not

it was fun; and for that reason they never talked about it

good, but consider it only as an enemy of life.

A large number of other Mighty Beings stayed

with Jupiter in the middle of the clouds at the top of the mountain, so much so that I

I can only mention a few. There's Venus, the queen of love and

beauty, which is much prettier than any woman you have ever been

or I see. There was Athena, or Minerva, queen of the air, who gave people

wisdom and teaching them how to do things

useful. There was Juno, queen of the earth and sky, who sat on the right

Jupiter and gave him all kinds of advice. There's Mars, the great warrior, who

it's nice to be in the hustle and bustle of battle. There's Mercury, the messenger that

fast, who has wings on his hat and shoes, and who flies off one

places to other places like summer clouds when they are pushed by

wind. There was Vulcan, a skilled blacksmith, who forged it in

a mountain that burns and forges many beautiful things from iron, copper, and

golden. And besides, there are many others that you will learn from

time after time, and about whom people tell strange stories and

lovely.

They live in golden houses

shimmering, high among the clouds - so high that the human eye does not

will never be able to see them. They can look down and

see what people do, and often they say

leave their high homes and wander unnoticed across

land or sea.

And of all these Mighty People, Jupiter

so far it is the strongest.

Jupiter and the People of Power are not always

dwell in the clouds at the top of the mountain. In the past, a family

the amazing Titans have lived there and have ruled

worldwide. There were twelve of them - six brothers and six

sisters-and they say that their father is Heaven and mother

they are Earth. They have the shape and appearance of men and women, and,

but they are much bigger and much prettier.

The youngest of these Titans is

Saturn; yet he was so old that people often called him Father

Timing. He was the king of the Titans, and, of course, was the king of the whole

earth besides that.

Men have never been so happy as

the reign of Saturn. It was the true Golden Age of the time

that's. Spring lasts all year. Forest and grassland

the clock. It was summer and autumn too, at that time

concomitantly. Apples and figs and oranges are always hanging ripe from

trees; and there is purple wine on the vines, and melons and fruit from

all kinds, which people only have to pick and eat.

Of course no one has to do

any job at that fun time. There's no such thing as

illness or sadness or old age. Men and women live long

hundreds and hundreds of years and never become gray or wrinkled or

lame, but always handsome and young. They don't need a house,

because there's no cold day or storm or anything that makes them

dreaded.

No one is poor, because everyone

it has the same precious things - sunshine, pure air, pure water

nourish from springs, grass for rugs, blue sky for roofs, and,

fruits and flowers of the forest and pasture. So, sure

only, no one is richer than the other, and no money, no

padlocks or bolts; because everyone is everyone's friend, and not

there are people who want to get more than anything their neighbors have.

When these happy people have lived enough

long ago, they fell asleep, and their bodies were nowhere to be seen anymore. They

drifting far in the air, and passing through the mountains, and across the sea, to the ground

flowers in the far west. And some men say that, even

to this day, they roam happily to and fro on earth,

cause babies to smile in their cribs, lighten the burden of the

weary and sick, and bless mankind everywhere.

It is a pity that this Golden Age must be

it's over! But it was Jupiter and his brothers that caused

that sad change.

It's hard to believe, but people say that

Jupiter is the son of the old Titan king, Saturn, and that he is only one

the year when he began to plan how he could fight against

her father's. As soon as he grew up, he persuaded his brothers, Neptune and

Pluto, and his sisters, Juno, Ceres, and Vesta, to join

with him; and they swore that they would drive out the Titans from

earthly.

Then a long war followed and

it's gruesome. But Jupiter has many helpers

mighty. A group of one-eyed monsters called Cyclopes kept busy

all the time, forging lightning in the burning mountain flames. Three monsters

others, each with a hundred hands, were called to throw stones and

the tree to the fortress of the Titans; and Jupiter himself threw his arrow

the sharp ones were so thick and fast that the forest was burning and the water in the river

boiling because of the heat.

Of course, Saturn is good old and quiet

and his brothers could not always defend against such enemies

these. At the end of ten years they had to give up and plead

peacemaking. They were tied with the hardest stone chains and

thrown into prison in the Underworld; and the Cyclopes and monsters

a hundred-armed men were sent there to be warden and guard them

forever.

Then the man began to be dissatisfied with fate

them. Some want to be rich and have all the good things in

the world. Some want to be king and rule others. Some

the strong want to enslave the weak. Someone cut down a tree

fruits in the forest, let no one eat the fruit. Some, some,

just for sport, hunting shy animals that have always been friends

them. Some even kill these poor creatures and eat meat

they are to be eaten.

Instead of everyone being friends

everyone, everyone is everyone's enemy.

So, all over the world, instead of peace,

there is war; instead of much, there is hunger; instead of innocence, there is

evil; and instead of happiness, there is misery.

And that's how Jupiter makes itself so

mighty; and so the end of the Golden Age.
