GREEK GOD
CADMUS AND EUROPE

In Asia there lived a king who had two

boys, boys and girls. The boy's name was Cadmus, and

the girl's name is Europa. The king's country is a very

small-time. He could stand on top of his house and look

in the aggregate. On one side were mountains, and on the other side were mountains

sea. The king thought that it was the center of the world, and he did not know

a lot about the country and other people.

But he was very happy in his little kingdom

alone, and very loving to their children. And he had a good reason

to be proud of them; for Cadmus grew up to be the most young man

brave in the land, and Europa became the most beautiful girl ever

viewed. But the sad days finally came to them

all the.

One morning Europa went to a field near the beach

to pick flowers. His father's cattle are in the fields, grazing among the

sweet clover. They were all very docile, and Europa knew their names

respectively. The shepherd lay in the shade of the tree, trying

make music with a small straw flute. Europa has been playing

the field had been thousands of times before, and no one had ever thought of danger

whatever hit him.

That morning he saw a strange bull

with herd. He was so big and snow-white; and he

it has soft brown eyes that somehow make it look very

gentle and kind. At first he didn't even see Europa, but

go to and fro, eat the soft grass that grows in between

clover. But when he had gathered his full apron

with daisies and buttercups, she came slowly towards him. She's the same

once not afraid of him; so he stopped to look at him, he was very

good-looking. He approached her, and rubbed his arms with his nose to

say "Good morning!"

He caressed her head and neck, and she looked

very glad. Then he made a bouquet of daisies, and

hang it around his neck. She looked at him with her soft eyes, and

it seemed to be thanking him; and in a few moments, he lay down

among the clover. Europa then makes a more floral arrangement

small, and went up to his back to wrap it around his horn. But

suddenly he jumped, and ran so fast that Europa could not

refrain. He did not dare to jump when he left so quickly, and

all he could think about was holding tightly to his neck and shouting extremely

strenuously.

The herdsmen under the tree heard

he screamed, and jumped to see what happened. She saw

the bull ran with him to the beach. He ran after them

as fast as he could, but it was useless. The bull jumped

into the sea, and swim quickly, with the hapless Europa in the

his back. Some others have seen it, and now they

running to tell the king. Soon the whole town was shocked. All

people ran to the beach and saw. All we can see is something

the white one moved very quickly on the calm blue water; and immediately

disappear from view.

The king sent his fastest ship to try

overtaking bull. The sailors paddled far out to sea, further from

any ship before; but no trace of Europa could

be found. When they returned, everyone felt hopeless

any more. All the women and children in the city weep for Europa

gone. The king locked himself in his house, and did not eat or drink

three days. Then he called his son Cadmus, and asked him to go up

ship and go find his sister; and she tells him

that, no matter what danger might stand in his way, he should not

return until he is found.

Cadmus is happy to go. He chose two

twenty brave young men to go with him, and set sail the next day

his day. It was a great undertaking; for they would pass through the sea

the unknown, and they do not know what land they will be

go to. It was even feared that they would never come to any country

at all. The ship did not dare to go far from the shore at times

that's. But Cadmus and his friends were undaunted. They're ready

facing any danger.

Within a few days they arrived at a

the island is called Cyprus. Cadmus went to the beach, and tried to talk

strange people living there. They're very nice

to him, but they did not understand his language. He finally made

sign to tell them who he is, and ask if they saw

his little sister Europa or the white bull that took him away. They

shaking his head and pointing to the west.

Then the young men

sailing on their little boat. They came to many islands, and

stop at each island, to see if they can find any traces

Europa; but they did not hear from him the same

once. Eventually, they reached the country we now call

Greek. It was a new country back then, and only a few people were

stay there, and Cadmus soon learns to speak their language with

good. For a long time he wandered from one small town to another

another, always telling the story of his missing sister.

One day an old man told me

Cadmus that if he went to Delphi and asked Pythia, maybe he

you can tell me all about Europa. Cadmus has never heard of it

about Delphi or Pythia, and he asked the old man what

that is to say.

"I'll tell you," said the man

that's. "Delphi is a city, built near the foot of the Mountain

Parnassus, at the center of the earth. This was the city of Apollo, the Bearer of Light; and there was

a temple there, built close to where Apollo killed a snake

black, years ago. The temple is the most beautiful place in the world. At

the middle of the floor there is a wide gap, or slit; and this slit goes down, down to the rock, down to the,

no one knows how deep the strange smell comes out of that crack, and if

a person inhales it a lot, he tends to fall and lose his mind

healthy.”

"But who is Pythia you are

speak about?" ask Kadmus.

"I'll tell you" said the man

that old. "Pythia was a wise woman, who lived in the temple. If there is

who asked him a difficult question, he took a three-legged stool, which

called a tripod, and put it over a crack in the floor. Then he sat down

on that bench, and inhaling a strange smell; and instead of losing his senses like

as others did, he spoke with Apollo; and Apollo told him

how does he answer that question. Men from all over the world go to

there to ask about the things they wanted The temple was filled with

the beautiful and expensive gifts they brought to Pythia. Sometimes he answers

clearly, and sometimes he answers it with a riddle; but what he

say it's always come true."

So Cadmus went to Delphi to ask

Pythia about her missing sister. The wise woman was very

good to him; and when he had given him a beautiful golden cup to

paying for his predicament, he sat down on a tripod and inhaled a strange smell

emerging through a crack in the rock. Then his face turned pale, and his eyes

he looked wild, and he looked in great pain; but they said

he was talking to Apollo. Cadmus asked him to

tell him what happened to Europa. He said that Jupiter, the,

in the form of a white bull, it had taken him away, and was of no use

looking again.

"But what should I

did it?" Kadmus. "My father told me not to

back until I find him."

"Your father is dead" said Pythia,

"and a strange king ruled in his place. You should stay at

Greece, because there's work you have to do here."

"What should I do?" word

"Follow the white cow" said

Pythia; "and on the hill where he lay, you shall build

a city."

Cadmus did not understand what he meant by

this; but he will not speak a word.

"This must be one

the riddle," he said, and he left the temple.

When Cadmus came out of the temple, he saw

a snow-white cow stood not far from the door. She seems

waiting for her, as she looked at him with her big brown eyes, then

turn around and walk away. Cadmus thought about what he had just

it said Pythia, so she followed it. All day and all day

the night he walked through a strange wild country where there was no one

who stayed; and two young men who sailed with Cadmus from home

long with.

When the sun came up the next morning, they

see that they are on a beautiful hilltop, with a forest in one

the side and the grassland on the other side. There the cow lay.

"Here we will build the city

us" said Cadmus.

Then the young men made fire from wood

dry, and Cadmus killed the cow. They think that if they

burning some of his flesh, the smell would rise to the sky and be pleasant

Jupiter and the Mighty People who live with him among the clouds; and

in this way they hope to befriend Jupiter so that he

not to hinder them in their work.

They need water to wash

their flesh and hands; so one of the young men went down the hill

to find some. He left so long that the other young man

become agitated and chase after him.

Cadmus waited for them to the fire

extinguished. He waited and waited until the sun was high in

the skies. He called and shouted, but there was nothing

answered it. Finally he took the sword in his hand and went down to

see what's going on.

He followed the path that was taken

his friends, and soon arrived at a smooth stream of cold water at the feet of a

the hill. He saw something moving among the bushes growing in

nearby. It was a ferocious dragon, waiting to

assaulted him. There's blood in the grass and leaves, and it's not hard

guess what happened to the two boys.

The beast jumped in the direction

Cadmus, and tried to catch him with his sharp claws. But Cadmus

he jumped to the side and struck his neck with a sword

length. A huge stream of black blood spurted out, and the dragon immediately

fall to the ground dead. Cadmus has seen many sights

scary, but never seen anything so horrible as

this beast. He had never been in such great danger

preceding. He sat on the ground and trembled; and, all the time, he

crying for his two friends. How now he built the city, without any

helped him?

While Cadmus was still crying, he was shocked

I heard someone calling him. He stood up and looked

perimeter. On the hillside in front of him was a tall woman

he has a helmet on his head and a shield in his hands. His eyes are gray, though,

and her face, though not beautiful, was very noble. Cadmus knew right away

that she was Athena, the air queen of—dia who gave wisdom to men.

Athena told Cadmus

that he should pluck out the dragon's teeth and sprinkle them on the ground. He thinks

it would be a strange kind of seed. But he said that if he

willing to do this, he would soon have enough people to

help him build his city; and, before he can say a word

he said, he was gone from his sight.

That dragon has so many teeth—so

so much so that when Cadmus pulled it out, they filled his helmet to the brim. Matters

next is to find a good place to sow them. Moments

he turned around from the river, he saw the ox yoke standing some distance away. Him

go to them and find that they put up a plow. What else is

she wanted? The ground in the meadow was soft and black, and he

riding the plow up and down, making long grooves as he

go awayl. Then he dropped his teeth, one by one, into the groove and

cover it with fertile soil. After he sows everything with

this way, he sat down on the hillside and saw what was going to happen.

Shortly after, the ground in those grooves began

roiled. Then, in every place where the tooth has been removed, something

the bright one grows. It was a brass helmet. The helmets were pushed

up, and before long the men's faces were seen below him, then shoulders

they, then their arms, then their bodies; and then, before

Cadmus could think, a thousand warriors leaping out of the groove and wagging

black soil that sticks to them. Everyone wears a suit

brass armor; and everyone had a long spear in hand

his right and the shield in his left hand.

Cadmus was terrified when he saw the strange plant

growing from dragon's teeth. Those people looked so fierce that he

afraid they'll kill him if they see him. He's hiding in

turn the plow over and then start throwing stones at them. Para

the soldiers did not know where the stones came from, but each one

he thought his neighbor had hit him. Soon they started fighting

among themselves. Person after person was killed, and in some

only five are still alive. Then Cadmus ran towards them

and exclaims:

"Wait on! Stop fighting! You guys are

my men, and I have to come with me. We're gonna build a city here."

The men obeyed him. They follow

Cadmus to the top of the hill; and they are excellent workers

so that within a few days they had built a house in the place of a cow

it's lying.

After that they built other houses,

and people came to live in it. They called the city

Cadmeia, after Cadmus who was his first king. However when

it had developed into a large city, known as Thebes.

Cadmus was a wise king. Folk

The mighty who lived with Jupiter in the midst of the clouds were very pleased with him and

help him in more ways than one. After a while he married

Harmonia, the beautiful princess of Mars. All the Mighty One is present at the party

wedding; and Athena gave the bride a beautiful necklace that

you can learn more next time.

But the biggest thing Cadmus has done yet

notified. He was the first Greek principal, and

teach them the letters used in his own country across

ocean. They call the first of these letters alpha and the second beta ,

and that is why men talk about the alphabet until the day

these. And when the Greeks had learned the alphabet from Cadmus,

they soon began to read and write, and made wonderful books and

useful.

As for Europa girl, she

taken safely over the sea to distant shores. He might be happy on the ground

new and unfamiliar place she brought—I don't know; but she never

hear about friends or home again. It really is Jupiter

in the form of a bull that took him away, no one knew. All of them

it happened so long ago that there may be some mistakes about

story; and I shouldn't have thought it strange if the sea robbers were

stole it from his house, and a fast boat with a white sail

took her. One thing I am very sure of: he is very much loved

by all who knew him so that a great unknown country into

where he was brought has been called by his name since-Europe.
