THE Glodok AREA is quite popular in the ears of the citizens of the Capital City. This is because this area is a place of residence of ethnic Chinese who are quite famous as a business center.
Since ancient times, the Glodok area has been popular as a place of economic transactions. A number of old buildings that can still be witnessed, showing the splendor and crowded business transactions in the Glodok area. Even in the past, the Glodok area has also become a place of night entertainment that is quite popular but disguised and illegal. The crowd of Glodok area had even started before the presence of the Dutch East Indies government. The Glodok area grows along with other old villages along the Ciliwung River.
Regarding the origin of the name, there are various versions of the story about the name Glodok. Some say that the word Glodok comes from Sund language, ‘Golodok’ which means entrance of the house. This is based on the existence of Sunda Kelapa Port which is the entrance to the Kingdom of Sunda.
Meanwhile another version, mentioned in the book titled ‘Betawi: Queen from The East’ said ‘Glodok’ comes from the sound of water “grojok-grojok”. Previously, the Glodok area was indeed a place to stop and provide drinking water for weight-pulling horses. The water is in an eight-square building in the middle of the courtyard of the City Hall building or at that time called the Stadhuis. From the shower then the people of Jakarta know the area by the name ‘Pancoran’ or also known as Glodok Pancoran.
Toko Merah is a relic of a Dutch colonial building located on the western edge of Kali Besar, Kota Tua, Jakarta. This location is one of the oldest buildings in Jakarta. This characteristic red color is known as the Red Shop among the wider community.
The Red Shop was built in 1730 by Gustaaf Willem baron van Imhoff on 2,471 square meters of land. The red shop has been a Chinese shop, Oey Liauw Kong, since the mid-19th century.
The name of the Red Shop is also based on the color of the front wall of the building which is painted red heart and not plastered directly on the surface of the brick. But there are also those who say that the name ‘Red Shop’ was taken after the events of ‘Geger Chinan’ which at that time many Chinese corpses scattered in Kali Besar so that the water surface became red.
During the Japanese occupation became the Building of the Japanese Army Health Service. After Indonesia's independence, Toko Merah changed through the phases of changing hands of office owners, one of which was PT Satya Niaga in 1964. Subsequently in 1977 it was changed to PT Dharma Niaga (Ltd) and the building remained in use as an office.
For those of me who have been sightseeing or just crossing the Old City area, no stranger to this place.Despite the thick historical context of this Red Shop, actually the store holds a heartbreaking story. That said, before switching from a shop, Toko Merah was once a place of torture and massacre of ethnic Chinese. As a result of the horror stories attached from this store, the surrounding community had heard the sound of women crying and footsteps of soldiers from inside the building.indeed often the surrounding community heard the sound of crying.based on the story there are still many people who do not believe about it.and many also who trust in it***.
