Yeon-hwa does not nod, despite her intention to go to the agency. From then on, Yeon-hwa does the job that the female agent managed to get for her. Sometimes it can last a day, often times a week, and occasionally for several months. Most of the work he did was to count stock items, wrap things, open packages, tidy up, clean, and dispose of various items. Every now and then, he could wear beautiful clothes and stand at the entrance of the building that was holding an event to attract customers. The job was easier and the hourly wage was better, but such a job was only a one-time job and only lasted for a few hours, so the total wage he received was nothing.
His work grew heavier as time passed, and it seemed he would not be able to regroup with his family because he could not save enough money. Yeon-hwa plans to work hard to become someone who is financially capable, learn certain skills and get a certificate, and eventually become a Citizen. He planned to go find his father and bring his younger siblings home from the orphanage. However, working day and night still did not increase the amount of savings in the bank, and the work he managed to get was only a trivial job and did not require qualifications or expertise. He is trapped in the same life while he extends his L2 status. Let alone dreaming of becoming a Citizen, Yeon-hwa might even be able to lose her status as an L2.
The shadow of his family no longer made him happy, the hatred for his father, the pressure of looking after his younger siblings, and the guilt of being forced to send them to an orphanage only grew. He is not an extraordinary person and he does not work desperately, but he has lived life as smoothly as possible. Doesn't he get anything better than standing on the edge of a cliff like this? Yeon-hwa is sick of facing everything.
That night was a few days before Christmas. The winter was very cold and the sky had been cloudy since morning, as if the snow was about to fall. Yeon-hwa returns home after standing trembling in a short skirt for two hours in front of a newly opened restaurant and trying to attract customers. He wondered if this Christmas was going to snow. Then he decided that he did not care at all and immediately wrapped himself in a blanket. He warmed his almost frozen body and nearly fell asleep when someone banged on his door. Turns out the building's man. Without getting out from under the covers and without opening the door, Yeon-hwa yells, “What's wrong?"
The man replied, "There's a call from the employment agency. It seems important, so hurry down.”
On the phone, the agent said that there was a job opening in the kitchen for a massive Christmas party. Yeon-hwa once worked for the party's organizing company and they also asked Yeon-hwa specifically.
“Why me?” ask Yeon-hwa.
Suddenly Yeon-hwa wants to forget everything. So he refused the job. He said that he did not want to do the job, or any job, so never contact him again.
The agent laughed. “So you want to starve to death?”
“I'd rather die of hunger. All the work you gave me never made any difference, just made my body more damaged. So, don't call me anymore unless you have a job that could change my life.”
Yeon-hwa hangs up the phone, exits the building's supervisory office, and climbs the stairs. According to him, dying of hunger and dying of exhaustion is the same. When he was curled back up under the covers and warmed up, at one brief moment, he felt as if he were in heaven.
Some time later, the agent offered something that changed his life. Weddings. Married to a Town Citizen. Women who are married to Citizens can become Citizens on the guarantee of their husbands. It was the last road taken by the Town men who wanted to get married but could not. As Citizens, the men have absolutely no shortage of financial or social standing. However, most of them are too old, have severe physical disabilities, are sickly, or want family culture, living conditions, and forms of marriage that make absolutely no sense. The agency reasoned that the men were either too busy working, or too shy to ask women out, or for such reasons, but in reality no one was like that.
