Mae Nak Phrak Khanong - Thailand


Almost all Thais know the legend of the ghost of Mae Nak Phra Khanong called Mae Nak or Nang Nak. This ghost story has even been raised to several films and is becoming increasingly famous. Mae Nak is a female ghost who died while waiting for her husband to return home from war. Because of his great love, his spirit so loved until his beloved husband returned home war 2 years later.


This urban legend is usually used by the mothers there to scare their children not to be naughty. Some even say that if children are still stubborn, then the ghost of Mae Nak Phra Khanong will eat their brains.


The ghost story of Mae Nak begins in the royal period in Thailand precisely in the 1850s. It is said that there is a woman named Nang Nak who lives in the Phra Khanong area. The area is a village on the edge of the capital Bangkok. Nang Nak at the time was living with her handsome husband Nai Mak. Their life was initially normal even until the woman was pregnant. At that time there was a war in Thailand and her husband was required to be a soldier to serve the country.


Because of this obligation, Nang Nak had to live alone in his village pregnant. She kept waiting for her husband to come home to war faithfully. Finally after 2 years passed, her husband Mak returned to the village safely. But upon entering the village, Mak felt that there was something strange about his hometown. Even he felt like a stranger there because the whole village didn't know him.


Arriving home, Mak is warmly welcomed by his wife and daughter who have been born and are still small. It was as if their old lives were returning to normal. After some time living at home, Mak began to realize that many things are strange in his home.


One day, Mak finally realizes that the house looks clean and tidy, but actually the house is messy and unkempt. Finally, he realized that all this was an illusion of a haunting spirit. Apparently, his wife and son had died during childbirth due to heavy bleeding during childbirth.


After being aware of the real situation, Mak finally seeks help from a monk to calm the spirit of his wife Nak. There was a great battle between the monk and the spirit of Nak. Finally, his wife's spirit spirit gave up and his spirit turned into a brooch. The brooch was later kept by the Thai royal family. Since then the ghost story of Mae Nak became famous throughout the country even until now.
