Laura was washing Bobby's shirt, which was spilled with milk, while giving her son milk. Laura was afraid that ants would swarm the clothes. That's why he washes directly.

Laura looked at her husband and mother-in-law in turn, both of them like monsters that would be ready to swallow her at any moment.
