إِذَا كَانَ جُنْحُ اللَّيْلِ أَوْ أَمْسَيْتُمْ فَكُفُّوا صِبْيَانَكُمْ فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَنْتَشِرُ حِينَئِذٍ فَإِذَا ذَهَبَ سَاعَةٌ مِنْ اللَّيْلِ فَخَلُّوهُمْ وَأَغْلِقُوا الْأَبْوَابَ وَاذْكُرُوا اسْمَ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَا يَفْتَحُ بَابًا مُغْلَقًا

It means: "If it is dark at night and you are in the twilight, hold your daughters in the house, for the devil is spreading, and if it has been an hour (i.e., after Isha) it is up to you to deliver them, and close the doors, saying the name of Allah, for the devil cannot open a closed door." (Silver Bukhari)

From Jabir RA, he said that the Prophet Muhammad said,

"Don't let your children go at sunset until the darkness of the night disappears because the demons will scatter if the sun goes down until the darkness of the night disappears."

In other narrations it is also mentioned that the Prophet Muhammad said,

لَا تُرْسِلُوا فَوَاشِيَكُمْ - أي كل ما ينتشر من ماشية وغيرها - وَصِبْيَانَكُمْ إِذَا غَابَتْ الشَّمْسُ حَتَّى تَذْهَبَ فَحْمَةُ الْعِشَاءِ ، فَإِنَّ الشَّيَاطِينَ تَنْبَعِثُ إِذَا غَابَتْ الشَّمْسُ حَتَّى تَذْهَبَ فَحْمَةُ الْعِشَاءِ

It means: "Don't let go of your cattle and your children when the sun goes down until the beginning of Isha's time. For demons are scattered if the sun sets until the beginning of Isha's time passes." (Moslem HR)

Described in Imam an-Nawawi's Shahah Shahih Muslim, children are asked to stay at home after sunset for fear that they will be disturbed by the demons that roam around at that time.

The Prophet recommended to close the door of the house accompanied by remembrance at the time of the exodus of the devil. One surah that can be read to ask for protection is Surah Al Falaq.
