Amidst the rush of school breaks, Verlin receives a letter inviting him to meet behind the school. In her confusion and closeness, Verlin decides to fulfill the invitation and steps behind the school.
Upon arriving at the back of the school, Verlin saw a girl who was waiting for him with a look of hope in her eyes.
“Verlin! I like you! Be my girlfriend!” said the girl while bowing.
“Sorry, because of my family situation I can't date anyone” said Verlin with a flat face without expression.
“Eh... Um... But!” said the girl stammered.
Verlin nodded gently, “Sorry,” he said as he bowed politely.
“Huuu!!” said the girl in a desperate tone, then left while crying.
“Thank you, Master,” Verlin said humbly as he bowed. After that, the Madam Master named Risa was seen coming out from her hiding behind a tree.
“Basic you are.. Don't call me when you receive a statement of love!” said Ms. Guru Risa in a firm voice, but listened in a disappointed tone.
“Sorry, but I don't want to get in trouble because the love statement is fake and playful so,” Verlin said in a firm tone, expressing his firmness.
“Yeah, why don't you trust anyone?” asked Master Risa with a sense of astonishment.
“Then it is like that, you will not get friends, know,” said Miss Master Risa in an understanding tone.
“Yes, I have no friends,” Verlin said in a low voice, revealing the void in his heart.
“Thank you very much. Then, excuse me first,” Verlin said with gratitude, then bowed again before leaving.
“Wait first! Listen to my talk until it's over!” ms. Master Risa said firmly, asking Verlin to keep listening to her explanation.
Verlin left regardless of what Miss Master Risa said, leaving her with disappointment clearly visible on her face. Verlin thought he would never take another misstep. He felt very happy in the past, but then experienced a painful event. To her, it seemed fine if she allowed the often false love statements that happened to her to flow like this.
While still in Elementary School, Verlin was a class clown. Verlin was happy to make the girl he liked smile.
But One day, while Verlin is playing ball with friends and the girl he likes, excitement encompasses them.
“Chiih! Stop, Verlin!” said the girl while trying to catch the ball that was thrown up, while Verlin was also nearby and wanted to take the ball.
“Kyaa!” the girl shouted as her feet accidentally stepped on a small rock, making her fall.
“Ah...” Verlin said dumbstruck when he saw the girl fall.
He immediately ran to retrieve Hansaplast, but suddenly someone shouted, “Hey! Goddamn bum! Don't run! Apologize to him first!”
In a hurry, Verlin did not hear the person's screams. Then, the friends who swarmed the wounded girl said, "Are you okay?"
“See! Bloody legs”
"It's nasty! I saw him get pushed!" a friend said with anger.
Verlin with a gasp of breath returned to the scene, while holding the Hansaplast in his slightly trembling hand. He looked around, looking for the injured girl. However, with the confusion engulfing, he did not see the girl among the crowd of friends who were still around the scene.
His heart began to fill with anxiety. Verlin muttered, "Eh, where is Kayla?" His voice sounded disjointed because his breathing still had not returned to normal after running quickly. He tries to overcome the worry that arises, hoping to find Kayla soon.
Hearing Verlin's question, the friends still gathered around the scene stared at him with sharp glare. Their facial expressions reflected dissatisfaction and disappointment.
“How would you tell him who ran away without apologizing to him” said one friend with a sharp tone, showing her disappointment towards Verlin's hasty actions left the injured girl without explanation.
The feeling of discomfort was felt more and more in the crowd. Some of the other friends simply shook their heads with expressions of displeasure. Last words from one of friends, “Give,” makes the atmosphere even more tense.
“You are wrong, I did not run,” Verlin said in a stern tone, trying to refute the accusations leveled against him. However, even though Verlin was in earnest denial, no one believed him.
“He pushed Kayla!”
“He tore up my notebook!”
“He threw me with a rock!”
“He insulted me, called me ugly!”
Such bad rumors spread in schools and are widely accepted as the truth. Verlin is targeted and labeled a bad guy in the school setting. Every corner of the corridor, every classroom, and even the dining room, bad stories about Verlin were heard everywhere. People avoid and stay away from it, feeling insecure and uncomfortable around it.
“They thought of me as a bad person at will,” muttered Verlin with deep disappointment. He felt judged without a chance to defend himself. All of that felt unfair to him, and the circumstances further strengthened the feeling of loneliness and isolation he felt.
No one believed Verlin or even intended to believe him. The allegations and negative accusations against him not only occurred in the school environment, but also spread to his family environment.
“Verlin! Mom got word that you hurt a girl?” exclaimed Stepmother Verlin with a voice of disappointment. The stepmother's gaze filled with disappointment and displeasure made Verlin feel even more cornered.
Not only that, Verlin's half-sister also spoke, in a voice full of displeasure, “Why did you do that! So mean!” the disillusioned sister's speech was like an additional blow to Verlin.
“They said that you lied and committed violence against Kayla,” continued the younger sister in a sharp tone.
“Eh..” Verlin said in a trembling voice when he heard the words they said. He felt a sense of destruction in his heart, unable to find words strong enough to refute the accusations.
“Do you understand how big of a problem you've made?” ask the stepmother in a voice full of worry and disappointment. His eyes reflected a desire for Verlin to realize the consequences of his actions.
“We have to deal with this and apologize," said the stepmother as she pulled out her phone, ready to call the relevant party.
However, before the stepmother exercised her intentions, Verlin quickly uttered, “Umm... Mothers... Listen to my talk..” Verlin hopes to stop his mother for a moment to give him a chance to deliver a version of the truth that is sometimes lost in accusations and negative prejudices that are circulating.
Verlin's mother did not hear Verlin's words and continued her phone call.
“Sorry to interrupt in the middle of busyness. I am Verlin's parents from class 6B,” said the stepmother in a voice heard across the phone. He tried to explain the situation to the concerned party, hoping to provide an objective explanation of the events involving Verlin.
However, neither friends nor family, none of them would want to believe in Verlin. As if there is already a negative depiction formed and attached to it. The frustration and loneliness deepened in Verlin. He felt isolated and there was nowhere he could trust to tell the truth. It was like being in a hopeless situation.
“I don't need to talk,” muttered Verlin in a soft voice. The decision to keep the silence of the self and no longer try to defend or explain oneself seemed to be the only way left for him. He realized that any words or explanations could not change the perception of those who had decided not to believe him.
