"Where can I get infected?" I asked her with her body lying weak and Talitha who periodically checked my blood pressure.
Satriya crouchs on the sofa, she gulps before starting the story, "There's one criminal, an illegal arms smuggler." The man took a breath, "Our army has been targeting this militant mob for a long time. In the arrest operation, some people were successfully arrested, and some others escaped. Including this one guy. No one knew he was infected. Kendra's after him, all alone. Until finally the fugitive was mired and almost fell into the ravine. His body was covered in wounds and blood everywhere. He's asking for help."
Satriya paused for a bit before continuing, "He begged Kendra to pull him up. The fugitive said his wife was pregnant and had no expenses for their son's birth surgery. The man was forced to engage in an illegal sale for the sake of his wife and child. If the child is not operated on soon it will most likely not be helped." Talitha's husband turned his eyes towards me, "Don't I explain also you know what your husband would do if he was in such a situation?"
I sighed deeply, knowing exactly what decision Kendra would make.
Why is the world so unfair? Good people like Kendra, they just want to do good, they just want to help people, but why do they get hurt?
"So that's why he's infected?" i'm repeating.
"Kendra also has a pregnant wife at home. How he was not touched to help the man" said Satriya immediately made my heart melt.
Again I am the problem. Everything that happened to Kendra always boils down to me. What kind of wife am I? Is useless.
"Sat.." I muttered softly, "Gue wants to see Kendra. Just a video call can you not do?"
Seeing the despair in the twinkle of my eyes, Satriya took a deep breath before standing up taking the phone in her pocket.
"Just a minute, I'm trying"
After fifteen minutes that felt so long, Satriya walked up to me with a sparkling face. The mobile phone screen in his hand revealed a treatment room that was tightly closed with plastic curtains around. A man is lying on the bed. Very pale and weak. Posel Satriya has now moved into my hands.
Satriya gestured for his wife to slightly move away, giving me space and time to let out all the grievances in the chest.
Kendra smile. A faint smile crept between his heavy-sounding breath. My heart is broken and it hurts to see this sight.
"Sa. a. ku. ngak. pa. pa.pa" the sound is almost inaudible.
I nodded, cheering, "Yes I know. My husband is a great, strong man. You must be all right. I'm sure."
Kendra only answered him with one blink of an eye.
"His father must be healed. Gotta recover" I continued, "Dedek already want to launch this loh Pi. Kan Papi promise to want adzanin dedek, sling dedek, nina-bobokin dedek.." My voice is increasingly turning raucous, there is a cry that I hold as hard as I can, "keep Papi also promise to teach you how to play bicycles, see elephants in the zoo, make sand castles on the beach.."My crying finally broke. Thread by tear also dripped on Kendra's cheeks. The more we talk about the future, the more tight this chest feels. Because we know that all future plans are now gray.
"Dek.." Kendra's voice sounded more lyrically, "Ja.ga Ma.mi. ya"
His words made my heart go free. My breath shortened, it felt like there was a thorn that stuck so deep in my heart.
"No. Dedek can't take care of Mommy. Papi should take care of Mami. Papi came home. Come back here again. The three of us are together again. Papi should be able to go home, should.." I hold my phone tightly in my hand as if I was holding Kendra's life which is now on the limit of nothing and nothing.
Kendra smiled faintly, her eyes so glaring at me.
We sank into silence for a few seconds before I witnessed the most terrifying thing on Satriya's phone screen. Kendra's body convulsed, her inhaler moving up and down, her breathing sounding heavy and dashed before a group of doctors ran to handle her. At that moment the call was cut off.
I screamed hysterically.
