Chapter 131
Mud started flying everywhere and roars filled the sky.
After struggling for over two hours, the last one standing was Number 3. He stood there and smiled, and did not even bother wiping the mud on his face.
"Try to fight with me? You have to fight!" Number 3 boasted, then turned towards Brother Geoff. "Hows it? Can you make a decision now?"
"Sure," Brother Geoff nodded. "Number 3, listen up. It's a very important mission so don't embarrass us!"
"Even if I die, I'll make sure Big Boss' father-in-law is safe!"
No one is sorry.
If they lose, they lose. Since they were willing to fight fairly for it, they were also willing to admit defeat.
But they know very well that they are walking the right path to never stop being stronger. They can't stop being stronger!
They were all excited, not because of what Ethan would give them, but because of the faith and confidence Ethan had in them.
……
April is in the hospital looking after William, so the task of cooking at home naturally falls to Diane.
But compared to April, Diane's cooking was not at all tasty.
"Or else, are we going to go out and eat? My food?"
Diane glanced at all the dishes she cooked on the table. Nothing seems right in terms of color, smell or taste.
He rarely cooks. April is a perfect wife and mother, so there is no chance for her to cook at all.
"Not needed." Ethan doesn't seem to care and eats as if everything is really good.
When he was out completing the mission, he had already eaten all sorts of things before and his stomach could accept anything now.
After all, this was her first time eating Diane's cooking, so Ethan seemed to be enjoying himself.
Diane couldn't bear to eat it.
It's too salty!
Just as he was about to tell Ethan that he should not eat anymore, the house phone rang.
Diane walked over to pick it up. "Hello? First Aunt? My mom's not home, she's with my dad in the hospital."
"Feventy year old grandma?"
There was a clear change in Diane's tone of voice. "Okay, our family will be present, I'll tell my parents."
After hanging up the phone, Diane's expression wasn't too good.
"What's wrong?"
Ethan almost finished everything on the table.
"Feventy-year-old grandmother on my mother's side."
Dian smiled bitterly. Her oldest aunt likes to arrange this kind of thing and insists on celebrating her grandmother's birthday every year.
It wasn't because her oldest aunt was really filial. He just wanted to take this opportunity to show how devoted he was and collect more rewards. He is the organizer and is in charge of everything, so he decides how much to spend.
April's family was poor and could not contribute much, so this aunt looked down on them and treated them badly for a few years now.
As a result, April never buys anything for herself and saves her money to buy something nice for her mother.
Otherwise, she would be labeled as an unfilial daughter.
"Dad can't go, for sure" Diane said. "Mom has to look after Dad and definitely can't leave either, so what am I going to do?"
"If our family doesn't send someone there, I don't know what bad things First Aunt would say."
She knew her oldest aunt best. This aunt would say whatever she wanted and she dared to say anything.
"Then we go" replied Ethan. "We should celebrate our parents' birthdays. I'll prepare a gift too."
"Wait what?" Dian quickly shook his head. "No, don't spend this money."
In his heart, he did not want to leave at all. He did not like to see the relatives.
After William was paralyzed, which relatives ever showed any attention to them? They even laughed out loud, saying that William was paralyzed for the rest of his life and that April was blind to think that he was married to a rich man when he actually married a cripple.
Diane never talked about it, but she knew it all.
He was kind, but that didn't mean he could continue pretending not to know anyone else was bullying him.
Chapter 132
"If we're not free then we won't go" Diane scoffed.
As he said that, the phone rang again. This time from April.
Obviously her eldest aunt did not trust her to deliver the message and was afraid her family would not attend the celebration, so she called April's phone in person.
"I have to look after your father and I can't leave. Diane, you have to go. No matter what, Grandma is an elder and it is only our right to celebrate her birthday."
April does have a problem with her sister, but she remains devoted to her own mother.
Dian didn't know what to say. She opens her mouth to say that she does not want to leave, but April has already hung up.
Ethan is amused. She had never seen Diane so disinclined before.
"Don't look moody anymore. We're leaving tomorrow and I can take the opportunity to greet your relatives" Ethan said. "Because I'm a daughter-in-law, I should also greet my new relatives."
"They may not like you very much" Diane replied unfriendlyly.
It doesn't bother Ethan. But since her mother-in-law had entrusted this task to her, she would make sure she did well.
First thing the next morning, Ethan sends Diane to the office to finish some urgent matters, then goes to the mall and buys a gift.
Then she returns to pick up Diane and they head to her grandmother's house in Park Creek.
"Ethan, if they ask a lot of questions, just answer them simply. If they say bad things about you, please don't get mad."
Diane looked at Ethan a little awkwardly. "My relatives are probably a little too curious."
He knows these people very well.
"Relax, I know what to do."
…
Meanwhile, at Baker's house in Park Creek.
There are lanterns and ribbons everywhere. Those who know nothing will think it is the Lunar New Year.
Everything looks so good.
“Yeah, why are there only three arches? Do you guys know how to do something? Every family should buy at least two, and if you can't afford one then you should at least rent one, right? Jared's! Jared's! Where is that from your family? Quickly install!"
"Why aren't there enough dishes in the kitchen? I've bought enough for my side, so if it's not enough then you all have to donate from your own pockets!"
"Cheryl, help Mum change her clothes. I spent a few thousand dollars to buy her new clothes, so it'll help her look more energetic."
The entire house was filled with the loud voice of Diane's oldest aunt, Sherry.
Sherry is a chubby woman who is married to a man of some standing in the local town office and is quite successful at Park Creek, so she has always been arrogant and arrogant in front of her own family.
Whenever something happened in the family, she would always say that she would make her husband tell anyone concerned, but she never helped get anything done before.
Sherry orders her younger sister and brother to do all sorts of things, but she just sits around and snackes on peanuts. He began to calculate who would come today, who would give how much money, and how much was left after deducting the cost.
"April is terrible. What time is it? He's not here yet?"
Sherry rolled her eyes irritated. "I know it's hard for his family, but what if it's hard? You mean he won't donate anything to Mum's birthday? That was too cruel to her!"
The man sitting opposite her had a small beer belly and did nothing. He just quietly drank his tea and looked very calm.
"Even if their families contribute, how much can they contribute?"
Christopher Lawton grunts in disgust. "Every extra person who comes means one more person to feed."
This is why the two can marry each other. The way they talk is the same.
"Christopher, can you come and help me? It is very difficult for me to put up this temple myself!" a voice came from the door.
Christopher raised his eyes but pretended not to hear anything and just changed his position and continued to sit there quietly.
Jared asks Christopher, a low-ranking mayor, to climb the stairs just to put up the stanzas?
What joke!
"If you can't do it yourself, slow down and you'll get it done! Do you know how expensive it is to dry a suit if it is dirty?" Sherry immediately scolded. "If you can't get a little thing done like that, why don't you donate more money?"
Chapter 133
Jared's face flushed red from doing this, but he could only stand still and slowly change the stanzas by himself.
Sherry glanced at the time. It's been ten and there are still people who haven't come.
Didn't he tell them the time clearly? Or do they dare to come?
"She doesn't even care about her own mother's birthday, I don't even know what she does every day so busy. Make big dollars? I didn't see anything!"
Sherry got up and all the pea skins fell to the floor. He immediately shouted for his nephew to sweep through everything.
She then rushed to the room where her sister, Cheryl, helped Grandma Baker to get dressed.
"I'll do it."
Sherry put a bright smile on her face. "Mom, how's the outfit? I spent a few thousand on it, do you like it?"
Grandma Baker smiled and nodded, "Yes, I like them, I like them."
He knew that these clothes did not cost several thousand dollars at all. They may be discounting at some department stores.
But he did not dare to say all this. Her eldest daughter herself was very impressive and if she said anything, her daughter would definitely scold her.
"Where's your husband?" Sherry turned to ask Cheryl. "Didn't he say he'd buy Mum a massage chair? He hasn't chosen her yet?"
Cheryl quickly replied, "She's already picked one, and she told the seller to send it today."
He looked a little arrogant as he said, "It cost more than $8,000!"
Then she turned to look at Grandma Baker, "Mom, when you feel tired you can lie on it, turn it on and you'll feel relaxed."
"My daughter is really filial," Grandma Baker smiled and patted Cheryl's hand.
"Where's April?" Cherly asked. "Have you called her? It's been so late and he's not seen anywhere."
"I've called!" Sherry stared back in annoyance. "Of course I've called. I also called many times yesterday and he said he must be here. But look at the clock! Does he not know how to come early and help around the house?!"
His words were filled with resentment and displeasure.
"Greencliff's a little bit away from here, so maybe he's still on his way" Grandma Baker said.
"Still on the way? It only takes an hour by car" Sherry said. "Oh, I almost forgot, their family doesn't have a car, so they have to take the bus or something. That's gonna take a lot longer."
Sherry almost forgot that her youngest sister wasn't like them. He had a car, so it only took him an hour to get to Greencliff. Without a car, they would have to take two buses to get here and it would take longer.
"This April is really terrible. Cars are very cheap these days, you can buy a domestic car for 50 or 60 thousand but he has no money to buy. Can't he pay an initial down payment of 20 or 30? grand?" Sherry tidied up her mother's clothes while constantly complaining, "The car is very comfortable, you can go wherever you want."
"Money of 50 or 60 thousand is also quite a lot. William had to take medicine for his feet every month, so he didn't have any extra money" Cheryl shook her head.
"In the end it's the cripple who's burdening our youngest brother." Sherry continued without thinking. "Our sister is very pretty and she's the prettiest in school. So many boys are after him, but somehow he's blind enough to fall in love with that useless guy."
"That's enough, don't talk about these things anymore." Grandma Baker didn't want to hear about this. April would be very sad if she heard these words.
"Mom, you don't have to talk for him. She thought she could live a good life after marrying into the Palmer family. In end? No Palmer family cares about William! living while William was just a cripple and a coward!"
Sherry scoffed and continued, "I even heard that this William found a husband for Diane to marry into the family. Have you heard anything more cowardly than this?"
"A husband to marry into a family?"
"Just right!" Sherry's voice rose and couldn't wait for everyone to know. "I heard he's also homeless!"
He pointed to the side of his head. "And he's got a problem here too!"
Chapter 134
Grandma Baker was immediately dumbfounded.
That's so embarrassing!
Cheryl never thought that an amazing child like Diane would have to find a husband to marry into her family.
And this husband is a homeless man and a lunatic?
What did William and April think? Even if they had no money for their daughter's dowry, they shouldn't do such things.
"Cheryl, I thought your partner's son was looking for a partner? Why don't you introduce her to Diane? This April is completely out of bounds, so as her older sister, we can't help but do nothing!"
"Sure, I'll talk to April later."
As they were talking, there was the sound of car horns from outside.
"Geez, that must be my precious son!" Sherry exclaimed excitedly. "She's been taking the family car around lately. The car makes it easier to find a partner!"
She then left her mother where she was and ran out of the room.
"Mom, let's get out too."
Cheryl helped the old lady out. He knew that Sherry's car cost over $200,000 and it was worth it to them.
"It's not something fancy, just a little over $200,000," Sherry walked over and smiled at the same time. "I'll go have a discussion with Christopher, once we get a grandson, we'll buy him a more expensive car!"
He walked to his front of the house to find that the car parked there did not belong to his family.
He saw the blue and white car logo. He's never seen her before.
"First Aunt."
The car door opened and Diane came out. When she saw Grandma Baker walking towards them, she shouted, "Grandmother, happy birthday!"
Suddenly it became very quiet.
Everyone's attention is not on Diane, but on her car. Especially the blue and white logo on the car.
Jared came and looked around the car. "Diane, when does your family have a car?"
This car does not seem cheap.
"We bought it last month."
"It might cost 50 or 60 grand, right?" Sherry glances. "Domestic cars are around this price."
Jared and the others said nothing. Even if they do not know exactly how much the car is worth, they are pretty sure this car is more expensive than the Volkswagen Passat Sherry.
Diane did not answer and just smiled.
The driver's door opens and Ethan goes out to stand next to Diane.
"Hello everybody, I'm Ethan."
Everyone's gaze was now instantly fixed on Ethan.
At first glance, Ethan stands tall but there is something casual about him and he doesn't look rich at all. The clothes she was wearing also looked very ordinary, and she looked a little older while standing next to Diane.
"Diane, is this the couple your parents found for you?" Cheryl immediately frowned.
Her oldest sister told the truth. This is a husband who is married to a family.
The family has bought a car and let this bastard drive it? After all, where did the April family get the money to buy that expensive car?
"Right, Grandma, this is Ethan, my husband," Diane nodded.
"He's…"
The old woman began to get angry.
So it is true that April has really found a husband to marry into the family, as Sherry said earlier. That's so embarrassing!
Before Grandma Baker could say anything, a car horn rang and a Volkswagen Passat came in. Sherry looked once and took a step forward with a big smile on her face. "Diane, move your car to the side, my son is driving the car in. Your car for 50 or 60 thousand dollars can park somewhere else, do not take this place!"
Chapter 135
It's a little quiet outside.
Jared and the others had an expression of disbelief on their faces. They do not know where Sherry found the confidence to say that this BMW only cost 50 or 60 thousand.
He could try to buy one with that amount of money and see what he got.
Dian did not move. He frowned and felt discomfort in his heart.
Sherry's tone of voice seemed to have gone overboard.
Even if they are strangers, parking is a matter of who comes first to be served.
"Why are you still staring into space?" Sherry noticed that Diane did not move and immediately became unhappy. He turned to look at Ethan. "I'm talking about you. The keys are in your hands, so move the car."
The Volkswagen behind stopped because he saw there was a BMW in front and did not dare to go to the side if he scratched it.
He just parked the car, turned off the engine and got out of the car. He looked at the car from back to front and whistled. "This car is so pretty, who's it belong to?"
"What do you mean by pretty, our prettiest car." Sherry scoffed and said nothing more because her own son had already parked. "That's just some domestic cars that cost around 50 or 60 grand, so how can it compare to ours?"
His son's mouth twitched. He thinks he heard wrong.
He looked up to see Diane standing next to the car and asked, "Diane, this car belongs to your family?"
Diane did not want to bother him and just walked over to her grandmother. "Grandma, my dad's in the hospital and my mom's taking care of him. The two of them can't come today, so I came here with Ethan to celebrate your birthday."
The old woman nodded. He glanced at Ethan with a displeased face but said nothing.
He can't just throw her out.
Diane helps her grandmother back home and Ethan follows behind them. He could feel that everyone was staring at him.
Did he attract so much attention?
"Mom! It's not a domestic car!" Sherry's son whispered to his mother in the back. "It's a luxury car, this one costs $500,000!"
"How much?"
Sherry thinks she heard wrong.
"500 grand!"
He couldn't hold his breath. He turned to look at the car again and suddenly felt it looked prettier than his Volkswagen.
"This April is really terrible. If he had no money then he had no money, why bother renting a car? There's no point pretending to be rich!"
He refuses to believe that April's family will suddenly become rich. He knows very well April's situation.
Christopher was still sitting at home and never stood up at all. He continued to act like he was an important person.
"Oh, Diane, you're here. After not seeing you for a few years, you looked even prettier than before," Christopher smiled as he saw Diane helping the old woman into the house. "You want me to find you a partner?"
Diane calmly replied, "I'm married."
Christopher finally looked up.
His gaze landed on Ethan and looked at him from top to bottom.
Ethan just nodded as a greeting.
Sherry glanced at him and Christopher immediately understood. April has actually found a man to marry into the family?
He felt like laughing.
"Jared, tell your wife that she can start cooking. Everyone is here, so he can prepare his food" Sherry orders.
Jared didn't say anything. His wife was busy all day, and if he did not do a good job, his sister would even criticize him. Even if he was angry, he could only endure it.
"Mom, look, Diane's starting to develop now, I hear she's working for the Palmer Group right now" Sherry said with a smile. "Diane, how are you doing now? Your salary is very high, right?"
"It's okay." Dian remained silent. He doesn't like the way Sherry looks at him.
"What gift did your mother have for your grandmother's birthday?" Sherry is very direct. "Some of us have gone to great lengths to give away our gifts."
Chapter 136
Sherry pointed to the old woman's clothes, "Look, your grandmother's clothes cost several thousand!"
"And your Second Uncle is sending a massage chair here right now, it costs $8000!"
He started reprimanding Diane, "Why bother when you only come to visit your own family? He even rented a car! Why not save the money and use it to show your grandmother a sense of filial piety? We are all one family, so we all know each other's situation."
Sherry hates to see others do better than her. He had not even had time to show off in front of his relatives when Diane came by driving a car for $500,000. Whatisthis?
They may also rent a car that is worth a million dollars.
Everyone was suddenly enlightened after hearing what Sherry said.
Everyone knows the situation at Diane's house. Never mind buying a car – William's monthly medical bills are enough to save on budget.
"It's more important to live a grounded life, understand?" Sherry glared at Diane as she said this, as if she was addicted to reprimanding her nephew.
"Understood."
Diane was almost angry but Ethan squeezed her hand gently to ban her, so she held her back.
After all, Sherry was an elder to him, so even if Sherry wasn't happy, she didn't need to explain anything to them.
"So what did April buy for Mum?" Cheryl smiles and asks this question once she sees that Sherry doesn't need to say anything more.
The Cheryl family has bought massage chairs worth over $8,000!
He could not bear to part with the money, but he was very upset that his older sister had always been arrogant. Last year Cheryl promised to buy a massage chair, so she asked her husband to buy it that very day.
There's a little bag in Diane's hand. Ethan has bought this at the mall before.
He also doesn't know what it is. He opened the bag for the first time and took out a box.
"Grandmother, my mother is not free to come, but I brought a gift and I hope you like it."
Diane picked up the box, and she could feel a bright green light shining as she opened it.
The old woman's eyes immediately sparkled.
"Dark!" Cheryl's eyes were very sharp and she couldn't help but exclaim. "It's ... It's jade, right?"
There was a jade bracelet inside the box, sparkling and translucent like a piece of ice. It shone with a faint green light, and Cheryl gulped her saliva a few times just by looking at it.
"This is not jade at all," Sherry laughed before Diane could say anything. "It's just glass."
Jade? If the April family was able to afford jade for the old woman, it was truly a joke.
He took the box from Diane's hand and peeked at it. "Cheryl, you're not experienced enough to say these things huh."
He then glanced at Diane and shook his head, his expression filled with contempt and disappointment.
"Diane, I don't mean to belittle you, but how can you buy something from the streets as a gift? Isn't that too much?"
He had spent several thousand on clothes, and brought a lot of food as well. The Cheryl family has bought massage chairs that cost over 8000 dollars as well.
Meanwhile, Diane was carrying this glass bracelet. Does he think he's a kid who comes to play?
How cruel!
"We can all understand because your family has no money and it's okay if you buy a bracelet or ring that costs only 1 or 2 thousand dollars. But you really brought a piece of glass here! Your grandmother is old and can't see clearly either, but I can see very clearly!"
Diane pursed her lips and her face started to turn red in anger.
He really can't hold it anymore!
"I know your eyesight is very good. So, why don't you look at the receipt and tell me if a street stall could produce something like that?"
Diane refuses to believe that Ethan, a man who doesn't even blink when buying a 2 million dollar car, will buy a clone!
Chapter 137
Sherry froze for a while before removing the receipt from the bag. He saw the price printed clearly on it.
"$56.000!" He could not help but exclaim, "How come?!"
A bracelet worth $56,000?
It is also not a very expensive type, and can be considered quite ordinary.
Since this is only for Diane's grandmother, Ethan doesn't buy anything too expensive. If he buys something for April, he will buy something that is worth ten or twenty times as much.
But even so, Sherry's exclamation shocked everyone in the hall.
Jade bracelet worth $56,000?
What madness is this?
Cheryl looked at Diane and could not believe this was real.
Her family has decided to give her a massage chair for $8,000 and Cheryl is ready to show off to the world. But now he did not dare to say anything more. This bracelet alone for $56,000.
Jared was about to ask if Sherry had seen the receipt wrong, but she knew that this eldest sister would not have seen anything wrong with money.
$56.000!
That's pretty much his salary all year.
Diane spent that kind of money on just one bracelet.
Even Grandma Baker herself thought that her old ears were misheard.
"How, you say?" she asked.
"Mom, $56,000," Jared replied to him. "April was really filial for giving Mum something so expensive."
He then deliberately glanced at Sherry.
As Grandma Baker heard the numbers, she quickly retrieved the box from Sherry and her eyes wrinkled with a smile.
Diane's expression did not change at all. He is already numb after Ethan surprises him many times. His expression would not change even if his receipt said $560,000.
The good part is that it is not too expensive, otherwise he will feel bad.
Sherry herself had bought a gold ring from the same store and recognized the receipt. But he only dared to spend $10,000, and he felt pain for a few days. Diane had bought a bracelet for $56,000 to give, so Sherry's expression soon darkened.
He still mocked Diane earlier and told them not to pretend to be rich. But this bracelet keeps him from closing his mouth.
"My mom won't buy a fake" Diane said. "Especially because it's for Grandma."
Sherry's even more embarrassed now. She could see that Diane's gaze was fixed on her grandmother's new clothes.
Sherry claimed to have spent several thousand, but in fact they added up to less than $500.
Diane implied that Sherry had bought a fake!
"April is really rich huh, looks like she managed a little leech from Palmers," scorned Sherry and muttered softly to herself.
Diane instantly churned when she heard this.
What does he mean by leeches from Palmers?
They never took anything from the Palmers!
He wanted to explain himself, but Ethan pulled his hand and shook his head to tell him not to be rash.
It was her grandmother's birthday today, so it was best not to make things awkward.
"Alright now, since April is busy, it's okay she's not coming. It's good enough Diane and Ethan are here" Jared quickly put an end to the matter. "Everything, sit down, the kitchen is very busy and the food will be ready soon."
He then took out a box of cigarettes from his pocket and offered one to Christopher, but Christopher simply smiled and pointed to an expensive cigarette that was already balanced in his ear.
He looked down at Jared's box.
Jared looked a little awkward as he took out another one and offered it to Ethan. Ethan immediately took it without looking. "Thank you uncle."
He then naturally put it in his mouth."
"Jenny! Pour some tea for Diane and Ethan!" scream Jared.
A girl who looked like a high schooler immediately came out with two cups of tea.
"Diane, this is your tea."
The young lady looked a little afraid of Ethan and felt too embarrassed to welcome him.
"This is your cousin-in-law, Ethan," Jared said with a frown.
"Ethan, this is your tea" said the young lady with a red face.
"You must be Jenny" Ethan smiled as he pulled out a red packet from his pocket. "Because this is the first time we have met, then according to custom, this is my congratulatory gift."
Chapter 138
Jenny was stunned and Jared was shocked too. He pushed him back, "Oh no no, I haven't even given you two as your uncle, how could I be ..."
"Uncle, take it," said Diane. "My mom has given instructions that we give Jenny a red packet. If you don't accept it, my mother will scold us when we get back."
Jared smiled a little awkwardly and let Jenny receive the red packet. He quickly reminded her, "Aren't you going to thank Ethan?"
"Thank you, Ethan."
Jenny said this rather gently, then ran away.
Sherry and her family were filled with contempt when they saw this. Why fuss over congratulatory gifts? It's not like it involves a lot of money.
Christopher said nothing and continued to look like an important person. There was a calm and faint smile on his face, as if he was looking down on everything.
Sherry estimates there could be two or three hundred dollars in the red packet.
His son is married and will not receive a red packet. Otherwise, he would be furious if his own son only received two or three hundred dollars.
As she was thinking about this, Jenny suddenly ran out. His face was all red and nervous as if he had seen something terrifying. Even his breathing was faster than usual.
"What's wrong?" Jared saw how worried he was. "Why did you come back here? Go help your mother."
"Dad..." Jenny's voice trembled a little. Both of his hands were holding the red packet and his palms were sweating.
He then turns to look at Diane and Ethan. "Red package .. it's too much."
"Ohoho~"
Sherry laughed out loud.
"My eyes, Jenny, you're in high school. If you're already so nervous about seeing a few hundred dollars, what are you going to do when the college exam rolls around?" Sherry could only shake her head. His younger brother had just married when he was thirty, and had one daughter. He was a shy man, but how could his daughter be equally shy?
He was actually scared by a few hundred dollars.
"It's not just a few hundred dollars" Jenny explained quickly. "It's not at all a few hundred dollars!"
"How much?" ask Cherly.
He's quite curious. The red packet was quite large and you could put quite a lot of money into it, but he didn't think anyone would give that much as a congratulatory gift.
After all, Ethan was just a man married into a family.
"Eh .. uh ..."
"A hundred?" Sherry was not happy. "My word, Ethan, a hundred is really too little. Jenny may be just a student, but according to our usual habits, at least two hundred ..."
"It's $ 10,000!" Jenny finally could not help it and exclaimed how much was in it.
The air froze once again.
Sherry was cut off right in the middle of her sentence and she almost choked on her own saliva.
Christopher was about to light his cigarette and almost drop it. His son was drinking tea and immediately coughed violently, even tea gushed out from his nose.
$10.000 dollars?
Congratulations gift of $10.000?
Who in this family has ever given so much?!
When Sherry's son and son-in-law first met Jenny, they only gave $300.
Ethan continued to sit in his place quietly. $10,000 was nothing to him.
"That's too much!"
Jared's face was red. This was equivalent to two months of his salary, and it was really too much to be a congratulatory gift to someone younger.
"Not much" replied Ethan calmly. "Jenny is about to take her college exam and she has to buy a lot of books and exercises to prepare for it, plus she has to make sure that her body is healthy and well-nourished. It's just a little gift. From me, when you get into a good university, I'll give you a gift, you can have anything you want."
This generous manner of speaking did not sound at all like a man married to his wife's family.
April's family didn't have this much money, but this supposedly homeless son-in-law couldn't possibly have any money at all!
Sherry exchanged glances with Christopher, and their expressions were very conflicted. What the hell is going on?
Chapter 139
They were very clear about April's family situation.
Only Diane works, while April has to take care of William since he was paralyzed. They lived very frugally for many years, so there was no way they would have so much money.
Only explanation…
It only took one look from Christopher for Sherry to understand. He turned to look at Diane and shook his head in his heart.
Her niece was truly beautiful, so if she put aside her embarrassment, it wasn't hard to find a rich man.
So Ethan is just a shield for what really happened.
Diane never imagined that Ethan's gift of greeting to Jenny could make her oldest aunt think of such a thing.
In the hall, Grandma Baker couldn't stop touching the bracelet and couldn't be bothered to talk about how Ethan married into the family. She can't wait to put it on and keeps asking Cheryl if it looks pretty for her.
Of course Cheryl didn't dare say it wasn't pretty, but she felt very conflicted inside.
She felt embarrassed to bring the massage chair from her family after this $56,000 bracelet.
Ethan sniffed as he smelled the smell of food coming out of the kitchen.
"My uncle's wife cooks very well," Diane glanced at Ethan. He knew this guy was really greedy. "It's been a few years since I've eaten his cooking too."
Diane hates coming here for the past few years.
"Everything is ready! Take plates!" Jared shouted as he carried a large pot of soup out of the kitchen and carefully placed it on the table.
When he saw Ethan wake up, he quickly said, "Oh no, don't get up, you're a guest and you shouldn't be doing these things."
"Wow Jared, you're really good at talking," Sherry had a smile on her face but she didn't smile at all. "So we're not guests?"
"Sister, what are you talking about? You are even in charge of this family, so are you considered a guest?"
Sherry doesn't know how to respond to this.
He was already used to being in charge and even though he was married outside the family, he still wanted to control his family. Even Jared as the eldest son of the family did not talk much like him.
Cheryl went to the kitchen to take out the dishes, and in no time the table was filled with eight or nine dishes.
Jared's wife took off her apron and there was a layer of sweat on her forehead. "Everything is ripe! Mom, come and eat."
When she saw Diane, her face was full of smiles. "Diane, I was busy in the kitchen and didn't get to greet you. This is your husband, right?"
"Hello Aunty," Ethan greeted her loudly.
"Oh hello!" He was so happy to hear her greeting him. Earlier she had dropped salt into the vegetables when Jenny told her about the congratulatory gift in the kitchen.
Sherry scoffs when she sees how Jared's wife is so polite to Ethan and Diane.
He quietly commented that this brother-in-law really knows how to pamper those with money.
"Mom, sit down."
Sherry helped the old woman into a chair, then she and Christopher sat on either side of her mother, while her son sat next to her, and the others sat in their seats.
Jared has arranged the chair in such a way that Ethan will be closer to his mother, followed by Diane.
Ethan is the guest and the guest should have a more important seat. But since Sherry and her family had taken the closest place to her mother, she also could not say anything.
"Geez, your cooking is really amazing" Cheryl exclaimed to Jared's wife as she looked at all the dishes on the table. "I can't do this."
Jared looked at his wife and smiled, "You were right about that. I'm in love with her cooking and won't marry anyone else!"
Everyone at the table laughed.
"What are you talking about!" Jared's wife is very shy.
Diane knew that her uncle and aunt were very affectionate. Although they were not rich, they never fought, and that in itself was very rare.
He turned to Ethan, "Have a taste?"
"Oh yes, please try the dishes!" Jared's wife chimed in vigorously.
"Mom hasn't said anything!" Sherry said loudly. "Today is his birthday, so can't we just let my mom say a few words first?"
Dian frowned a little. She feels that her oldest aunt deliberately did this to choose her and Ethan.
Chapter 140
"I have nothing to say, as long as everyone is happy, I am happy."
After wearing the bracelet, Grandma Baker was now in a very good mood.
"Diane, eat more. You rarely come, so eat more."
He looked at Ethan. Although she did not like the fact that she was married to the family, but because of the bracelet, she decided to call him as well. "Ethan, eat more too."
Sherry cursed in her heart. Even her mother has been won!
Diane takes food for Ethan, but before he can eat, Christopher gently hits his wine glass with chopsticks and calmly says, "Because Mum has nothing to say, then allow me to say a few words."
Sherry did not wait for anyone to react and quickly smiled and said, "Sure! Let's invite our Lawton Manager to say a few words to everyone!"
He even threw his weight around the dining table at home!
Christopher smiled and looked around. "Today is my mother's birthday. On behalf of all the younger ones, I hope that mother will receive a blessing as big as the sea, and you will live as long as the mountains!"
Sherry and her son immediately began clapping loudly.
Cheryl and Jared clapped a few times, while Jenny and her mother did not even flinch.
"Because everyone is around, oh wait, Cheryl, your husband is still on his way, but we won't be waiting for him" Christopher said as he glanced at Cheryl. Her husband still carries a massage chair. "Everyone is here, so I'll say a few things."
"Jared, all this time, you've been taking good care of Mum, and I've been watching her."
This is considered a compliment.
Diane doesn't know what to say about this.
How much did the eldest aunt and her husband care for her Grandmother? Grandma was always taken care of by her uncle's family.
Jared also felt discomfort in his heart, as if he had taken care of his mother just to get Christopher's affirmation.
He laughed and said nothing. But his wife was a bit unhappy and it was written all over her face.
Ethan witnesses all the various reactions around the table and is very amused inside. Sherry and Christopher are really treating themselves as the head of the family. This tone of voice actually sounded like the mayor speaking to his subordinates.
They've gone a little too far alright.
"Also Cheryl, you've been fine recently. Your brother and I always tell you this and I'll say it again. If you need anything, just say it. Besides I have some connections in Park Creek. ."
Cheryl smiled and replied, "Thank you very much, brother-in-law."
They've been saying these words for years, but when Cheryl's kids want to go to a better high school, Cheryl has searched for Christopher several times but she continues to say that the current government policy is very strict and it is difficult for her to pull any strings.
"Why are you so formal with your own brother-in-law?" Sherly laughs. "You're too polite!"
Christopher smiled and finally turned his gaze to Diane.
She had a strange smile on her face, and her expression made Diane feel uneasy.
"Diane, your parents are not around today, so you can convey my words to them."
Before Diane could answer, Christopher sighed first, then continued, "We all know your family situation. Things are tough, but you can still make ends meet. Don't blame me for being honest. There are some things I have to say. "
Dian's expression changed.
"We can't be shameless just because we want to earn more money."
"For cars, houses, and more money, you mean we should throw away our self-esteem? No, we can't!"
Diane looked up and looked at her uncle and did not know what he was talking about.
"Because you find a man to marry into a family, then whether he is a shield for what you are actually doing or not, doesn't matter. You have to live well. If you want to have fun out there, I can't do anything because your parents don't seem to care. But don't go too far and embarrass our family!"
Diane finally understood what she was driving and couldn't stand it anymore. He slammed one palm on the table and got up in shock.
