Beside You - 5Sos

“Where are you?” varo asked as Bima dashed around in a flurry with a panicked expression.

“Toilet. Piss”

“Eh entar” hold Varo make Bima stop stepping.

“What?”

“Hold first. Until it becomes a stone if you can”

“Prophet lu!” maki Bima continued to run away leaving Varo and Dimas stepped both along the beach accompanied by a dim light from the cafe.

Dimas picked up a pebble and threw it towards the sea water, his expression looking shaky, inversely proportional to the flat expression of Varo who was busy reading Arini's message from two days ago.

“Lu likes Olivia?” tanya Dimas suddenly made Varo turn towards her.

“Why are you suddenly nanya?”

“Gue just curious” replied Dimas. He took a breath and chose to sit on the sand.

“Lu...suka?”

“Iya. Why?” varo replied asking.

“As a friend or more?”

“Two.”

Dimas' hands again threw pebbles, his expression beginning to look doubtful. “Kalo for example I suggest you do not need to get too close to Olivia, how?”

“Not because you're dating Arini. Just so it was..” continued Dimas hurriedly when Varo cast a puzzled look. “Gue feels something strange from Olivia”

“For example?”

“She is too perfect” replied Dimas. “From the physical side Olivia is perfect, from personality.gue can give you eleven out of ten points. Olivia attention, make comfortable, and occasionally can make baper”

“Lantas?” Varo looks increasingly confused trying to digest Dimas's intentions.

“The perfect girl doesn't exist. Aye right?” the word Dimas even sounded worried about himself between asking or stating.

“Olivia perfect or not, I don't care Dim. Because what I know now, I like him”

“Fall in love” murmured Dimas but still could be heard Varo. “Don't fall in love too deeply. You fear broken heart. I have a feeling, this time if you are heartbroken, the pain will be forgiven.”

Dimas got up from his seat after throwing the last pebble in his hand. “Sorry if I get mixed up. But I think it's a friend's use.”

Varo forced himself to laugh but still did not reply to Dimas' words.

“Quietly I won't ruin your approach to Olivia. I want his son to be supportive” joked Dimas at last. “Gue log in first, want to play the game.”

Varo's head nodded, his eyes looking at Dimas who stepped away and then he chose to sit on the sand. Varo clearly felt a little influenced to think about Dimas' words just now.

Their friendship was long enough, and Varo knew Dimas never cared about other people's love stories. The guy is always cool with his own world, he will only move when his friend needs help. Dimas's life motto is short; Dimas doesn't want to know people's affairs and he doesn't want people to know his affairs. Therefore Dimas and Varo fit to be friends.

But strangely enough, today Dimas has just asked the most crucial question to Varo, someone who is in love but still occasionally feels a dilemma with his own relationship.

The ringing sound of the phone ripped off Varo's daydream, he snorted lazily as soon as he saw Amirah's name emerge from the phone screen.

[Mobile phone if it's not sold!] Omel Amirah ketus without saying hello as soon as Varo presses the green button.

“Why?”

[Why! Why is! I'm calling you from earlier you should have picked up!] Amirah sounded furious.

Varo took a breath of restraint to say that it was not only Amirah's calls that he ignored, but calls from Arini and Rava as well.

[Mama is in the hospital! He dropped last night. Satisfied lu?!]

Varo's body suddenly stiffened like an electric shock. He wanted to ask but the sentence that came out of his lips even impressed him indifferently.

“Why are you mad at me?”

Actually Varo is not smart in expressing his feelings and Amirah knows that. But in a strange situation like now ‘Varo's indifference’ instead makes Amirah's anger even more explosive.

[That's so selfish of you! Mama kayak gini tuh one of them because of your attitude! He's stressed! His son's mind would not squirm him. You can hate your mom's divorce, but that doesn't mean you immediately throw your empathy out of your mama's condition. You think you're just a victim of their divorce? I also, Rava's brother as well. But we're both not quiet, not like you! Just be quiet in one place and busy turning on others over your condition. When do you want to grow up like that?] the long Amirah spray did not give Varo a chance to defend himself.

Amirah's breath sounded so hunting, a sign that there was still a lot of anger stored up due to the day's emotions had to find a way to fulfill the desire of Kinasih who was eager to hear the voice of his youngest son.

[Lu don't turn off the phone. After this I'm going to mama's room, keep calling you again, and you have to talk to mama]

“Gue should say what?” asked Varo in panic.

Since the divorce of his parents, Varo rarely chatted with them. He rarely went to Nikolas Wijaya's house and rarely called Kinasih. Varo's relationship with his parents is already tenuous, making Varo feel awkward every time you have to talk to them.

[How is it, what is the pain, has eaten or has not. Just be careful if you do not pick up my phone] ketus Amirah unilaterally disconnect the phone.

Varo let out a long sigh, Amirah's words were clearly a threat that made Varo had to obey Amirah's orders.

Varo's face turned away. Olivia came and handed him a dark brown jacket and sat down next to him.

“Punya Kak Rangga's. I borrow, let you not get cold here”

“Thanks.”

Varo's outstretched hand took the jacket from Olivia. “You've eaten?” ask Varo sounds clumsy.

Olivia just nodded briefly. They then sat quietly, each staring deep into the vaguely visible coastline thanks to the cafe lights. About five minutes later Varo's phone rang making the man's expression stiffen staring at his phone screen.

“You want me to go, I can go now”, said Olivia softly as if to understand that Varo wanted to be alone.

For a moment Varo cast a doubtful look, but he then shook his head. His hand clasped Olivia's right wrist tightly, while her breathing sounded heavy as she pressed the green button on the phone.

[Varo.].

Varo's body froze as soon as he heard Kinasih's voice. This was the first time after all this time that Varo had heard Kinasih's voice again. In the past days Varo tended to shy away, letting all the information about Kinasih he heard from the Son.

[Varo, you heard mama right?]

“Ya..” replied Varo slowly once.

[Have you eaten?]

“What pain mama?” reply Varo asked something else, he was too awkward to just mince words to answer Kinasih's question.

[Germs of achievement. Amirah said you are an intern in Yogyakarta?]

“Iya” replied Varo briefly.

For a moment both of them were silent without a sound. Varo's expression turned gloomy, he felt indecisive between wanting to end the call or remaining silent waiting for Kinasih to speak first. Varo's face turned towards Olivia as the girl's hand patted her gently on the back of her hand. Olivia smiled sweetly making Varo force himself to smile.

[Mama hope sometimes you will come here] said Kinasih Lirih. [Mama kangen with you.]

Varo's heart suddenly raged causing a feeling of sadness. The soft voice of Kinasih made Varo realize that he still missed Kinasih. Varo is getting into a dilemma, he wants Kinasih back next to him as the figure of mama, as he used to be. But on the other hand his ego is still too high to admit it.

[Would you like to see Mom?]

“Kalo I have time, I came” reply Varo sounds like a pseudo promise but still make Kinasih smile happily from across the phone.

There was a speck of happiness that was heard from Kinasih's voice when he next told his condition, the middle-aged woman spoke at length, not knowing that Varo did not listen too much to his words. Varo's eyes were already looking far towards the shoreline as a form of diversion from a sense of emptiness that gradually spread up to meet his chest.

“You're not papa?” whispered Olivia slowly.

Varo looked back at Olivia. Olivia's expression looked worried making Varo shake honestly. Olivia then fix her sitting position sideways, so her hands are more free to pat slowly Varo's back.

“Ma, I have to banter my friend to inn” said Varo cut Kinasih's words. “Let me call again.”

Kinasih suddenly shut up, he was too carried away until he forgot that there was still a wide chasm between himself and Varo. Kinasih could not even do anything when Varo turned off their phone connection unilaterally.

Varo took a deep breath, looking a little relieved as if he had just escaped from hell.

“It was mama. She lives in New York” said Varo turned off the phone so no one called her again. “mama moved there after divorce with papa, fitting me first class High School. They now have their own families.”

Olivia is silent, waiting for Varo to finish his story. But when she saw Varo's expression turned grim and went silent, Olivia finally opened her voice.

“You kangen?”

“Iya. I miss” Varo's nod sounds like he's pouring out his heart. “But I miss those who used to”

“Papa cheated, mama cheated, and they said not happy with their marriage. Though there was me in the hearing room they had a fight.”

Varo smiled faintly staring at the sand under his feet. “I always feel alone.”

One breath was heard, Varo felt a little strange because Olivia's presence there could easily make Varo feel free to express what he had been quiet and close in the heart.

After that they were silent, long enough, making Varo's face turn towards Olivia, the girl did not say anything just her hands still patting slowly on Varo's back.

“You don't want to talk? I have a cousin, his name is Angga. Every business is the same mom, she always nasehatin me at length.”

Olivia smiled and shook her head. “I will not nasehatin you, because you will not be horrified by my words. Even free even though I say spirit. I don't think it will have any effect on you.

Tonight you will definitely feel difficult, tired, or even feel lonely. So I won't give you a quote. I just hope tonight you can sleep well and tomorrow you wake up in a better mood.”

Varo was stunned, this was the first time someone had comforted him in a stroke. Olivia did not say anything like Angga, Amirah, or Rava did. Olivia just sat there accompanying Varo, patting him on the back, and hoping that Varo would fall asleep.

It was as simple as that, but it made Varo's feelings fall even deeper for Olivia.

“I can hug you? If not also-”

Varo's sentence was cut off as soon as Olivia pulled the guy's body into her arms.

“You already have special permission” whispered Olivia.

Varo smiled wryly buried his face on Olivia's shoulder, his eyes then closed trying to be sure that the feeling of emptiness within him would soon pass.
