At seven o'clock in the afternoon, Varo and Olivia were still in the malioboro area. Throughout the afternoon the two go down the streets of Jogja, stop at one of the places to eat, or just sit on the roadside angkringan while waiting for the cloudy again turned bright.
“Bima is most afraid to meet the same who soan” pointed Varo at a swarm of kuntilanak, pocong, and a country of jinn who were taking photos with tourists.
“Captain yes to him?”
“Iya, when she was a child she was invited to play trampoline with genie, so traumat” story Varo held a smile. Bima's spiritual experience was indeed the most random story he had ever heard.
Olivia threw an interested look. “So jump both so?”
“Iya, but the word Bima gennya there are seven”
“Kayak boyband” chirps Olivia wonder. “You are the same Bima deket really?”
“That five is like my soulmate” replied Varo poetic. Olivia laughed amusedly at the boy's story about his meeting with Bima in the beginning of college first.
The son of Sadewa Kaindra, often called PSK or Bima by his friends is a stocky guy with a unyu face. Bima is Varo's first friend in college who doubles as a spiritual advisor to Varo, Dimas, and other friends if he feels shaken by a pile of college assignments. Even though the lecture itself is messy, but the wise advice always comes out of Bima's lips every time he sees his friends starting to want to DO independently from campus.
The beginning of the meeting occurred when the second day ospek Varo was late and sentenced to a squat road with Bima and several other children from the front gate of the campus.
‘You don't?’ tawar Bima thrust a glass of ale-ale and bread when they just finished sit up twenty times near the main corridor of campus.
Again punished kok even open stock, murmured Varo threw a look of wonder.
Initially Varo wants to refuse, but Bima's big smile makes Varo feel bad and forced to take what the guy has to offer.
‘Gue Bima from SMA garuda’
‘Varo, SMA red white’
‘Wow’ exclaims Bima is amazed as if Varo is from another planet. ‘Gue heard rumors of red and white high school boy was cute and it turned out to be true yes, lu sakep.’
Varo immediately choked on his own ale-ale while Bima was still raving, not realizing that there might be something wrong with his words. From there Varo can conclude that Bima belongs to the ranks of children that most Varo hate to be made friends; plain and chatty.
Then somehow, but suddenly Varo's body seemed to arise a magnetic field and Bima suddenly became iron, the two are often seen together. Wherever Varo goes, there must be Bima always faithfully accompany.
When the ospek activity was completed Varo thought it would be detached from the shadow of Bima, but unfortunately destiny said another. They were husks, and of course from then on until an unspecified time limit, Bima was the soulmate of Varo. It looks a bit disgusting, but that's what it looks like. Where there is Varo, there is Bima.
Varo is also increasingly convinced that Bima the sableng man is indeed destined to be his friend, when one day Bima complained to the children boarding crocodiles if his butt hurts.
‘I think I hemorrhoid deh’ complained Bima lay on her stomach.
Children boarding spontaneous crocodiles suddenly become impromptu doctors. Bima was given hemorrhoid medicine, her butt was massaged using wasp oil, laundry soap was replaced with a more expensive one, and even her buttocks were wearing incense for fear of being overstated by kuntilanak.
'It's hard if I'm a gini. It's an acute illness said Bara sok tau. 'Varo try it, you think the solution. Lu is a jago if asked to think that's not good'
'Shit!'
Fortunately Varo who was sad to see Bima was bullied by boarding children hurriedly took the initiative to take the man to a dermatologist and genital.
“What does the doctor say? Is the hemorrhoid severe?” ask Olivia curiously.
Varo. “Not a hemorrhoid, Bima's ass actually wants to grow boils.”
Spontaneous Olivia laughed crazily, to the point of drawing some people's attention to her. He hastily smothered his mouth so as not to make a loud noise, and instead his tears melted down his cheeks.
“Don't cry, I'm no longer a sad story” said Varo cheerfully saw Olivia's laughter.
“That's a really funny vow. I think now I'm thinking Bima will laugh deh”
“But don't tell me if I'm the story, ntar he cambek.”
Olivia's fingers raised up into a circle as a sign of okay, but her laughter never stopped. Olivia could not imagine how much Bima suffered after that had to sleep on her stomach until her boils healed.
Varo checks the watches, they have to come back now or it will be until midnight.
“Back yuk” invite Varo. Olivia nodded to correct the location of her bag.
They walk through the crowds of people who pass by. Malioboro is always crowded, especially if at night, it feels like all Jogja residents are gathering at that place. Many times Varo sneaks while trying to avoid hitting other pedestrians. Even Varo refrained from swearing when several groups of young people were taking pictures in the middle of the pavement.
Already know again rame even photos in the middle, snorted Varo.
Fortunately Varo can breathe a sigh of relief when his footsteps have approached the car park area, his face then turned and deg! Olivia wasn't there. The girl disappeared without a trace, making Varo's expression turn frantic.
So he walked alone?
Without thinking, Varo immediately turned back his legs back to join the crowd earlier. His eyes were staring back and forth with an extremely anxious expression. If it is lost it can be dangerous, especially the place is crowded.
Varo's feet went twice as fast as the ones they visited, and unfortunately there was no figure of Olivia standing or walking among the crowd.
In Varo's heart, he hoped that Olivia was just prank on him and would come out of hiding with a big laugh. Varo promises not to be angry, really, because it's better than now when he looks clearly confused while trying hard to control himself so as not to panic more when looking for Olivia.
Step by step Varo passed until almost at the end of the malioboro crossroad. Both of his hands were moving to shake his own hair. Olivia was nowhere, not even among the line of demons who were busy taking pictures with tourists.
And without feeling the legs of Varo stepped closer to the zero kilometer point malioboro. He felt very desperate.
But suddenly his anxious expression and panic ransacked as soon as he saw Olivia sitting alone on one of the chairs while wearing a Varo jacket that looked oversized on his body.
“Olivia! How are you here?” call Varo. His expression looked very angry, not because Olivia was sitting alone there, but because Varo knew he would blame himself completely if something happened to the girl.
Olivia's face lifted, but instead of feeling guilty she smiled sweetly. “I want to call you, just turns out I don't have your number.”
Varo took a deep breath trying to throw his anger away. He crouched down right in front of Olivia and raised his face to look at the girl. Varo's age felt cut the angel of death five years sooner.
“So when my sandal road broke up, I called you but you weren't horrified. I want to follow only my body can not slip, so I miss” explained Olivia slowly. “I finally bought new sandals and sat here, because I know you will definitely return my nyari.”
“Maaf” continued Olivia whispered softly, her face bowed staring towards the floor zero kilometers.
Varo could only glance at Olivia's yellow slippers with a raging feeling, he wanted to get angry but somehow his anger had instead slowly disappeared away.
“I was just afraid I was late to realize you are not there and you are why-napa” said Varo seriously, his hand unconsciously stroking the hair slowly Olivia made the girl's face look up at him. “Other times do not repeat, I can go crazy if I did not meet you.”
Olivia's head nodded and her lips smiled slightly. “I actually want to wait for you in the place of the demons earlier. But I think you certainly will not squirm me because it is too crowded”
“And you sit here? It's a lot of also”
“But this is the starting point, I'm sure if you don't meet me all the way here, you will definitely meet me at the starting point” replied Olivia sounded innocent.
Varo was stunned, his eyes turning soft when he heard those words, a moment later his hands were stretched out toward Olivia. “Ayuk, let you not disappear again.”
Without hesitation Olivia grabbed Varo's hand, this time they walked together down the crowd, and Varo himself did not let go of his grasp, even as they were already away from the crowd of pedestrians. Varo just didn't want to miss that moment.
...*****...
At two o'clock on Sunday Varo was fast asleep and Bima without manners shook his body until he woke up from his sleep. He guiltlessly splashed Varo's face with water from a vase of flowers, making Varo cuss rough not happy his sleep was disturbed.
“What the hell is Bim? I'm still sleepy!” varo snapped in annoyance and grew increasingly irritated upon seeing Bima bare-chested standing in front of him, complete with a circular buoy at the waist.
“Come to swim, pool mumpung again desi”
“No, I want to sleep” refused Varo ketus, last night about half-twelve nights he just arrived at the inn, not to mention having to help Olivia move all the groceries to the cafe.
“Yaudah deh if you do not want” nod Bima not as usual forcing. “Wah very dear when there was Olivia” muttered deliberately a bit hard and then went out.
Varo's eyes spontaneously opened wide. Any Olivia? His suddenly energized body immediately jumped down, hurriedly washed his face, and stepped out looking for Bima.
Varo jumped in shock because it turned out Bima was waiting for him outside.
“Lu nipu me yes?” grunts Varo exasperated. His spirit immediately slumped away about to return to the room, but his hand was gripped by Bima firmly.
“Ngot completely cheated. There is Sera below, she said Olivia shortly after making the same cake Kak Nabila.”
Varo clucked, inevitably ended up going to the pool. But as soon as he saw the sun shining just above his head, Varo instantly undoes his intention to touch the pool water. He prefers to sit under the umbrella next to Johan, while Bima and Dimas have swam to and fro.
The two people were indeed the least resistant whenever they saw a puddle of water, the luggage wanted to swim. Maybe the first time his mother was pregnant mostly cravings duck peking.
“Lu no swimming?” ask Varo. Johan shook his head to siphon off his iced tea plan.
“Hot, my skin is getting burnt” replied Johan briefly.
They then fell silent as they watched Sera appear and join the pool. Varo's forehead wrinkled with a sleepy expression, he did nothing, but seeing Bima and Dimas swimming made his body feel tired. After all how can there be people at home swimming broad daylight like Bima and Dimas? You freaks.
“Lu last night just turned twelve o'clock huh?” ask Johan.
“Iya”
“Where are you going?”
“Nongrong in Malioboro”
“Whispering no Olivia?”
“Nagging. Is he noisy about you?” ask Varo a little curious. Johan nodded.
“Once I want to duct tape his mouth.”
Varo laughs amusedly. “You guys are really deket?”
“Iya from small co-main. That's why I trained a little for him, every time he started mengedumel, I immediately play death metal songs, let him diem. Lose noise because”
“Gue simple way lu” Laughter Varo. “But from yesterday he wasn't as noisy as you described sih”
“He is so interested in people. Likes to keep image” replied Johan casually then laughed amusedly when Bima almost drowned because Dimas prank to take the buoy.
Varo was suddenly silent because the words of Johan just now seemed to be a code that Olivia had an interest in him. But once again Varo quickly threw the thought away.
“Intinya, you should not fall in love with Olivia” laughter Johan giggled amusedly.
“Why? You like Olivia?”
Johan shook his head still with an amused laugh. “Gue there are girls. You have a girl too, right?”
Shot with questions to the point so make Varo misbehavior. He seemed hesitant to answer but Johan instead smiled amusedly, his expression relaxed as if the question was just a wind.
“Gue will not interfere, because it's your relationship. Just my best friend Olivia, she's stubborn, so I can just tell you. Beware” Johan said half-whispering.
“That's what you want to say?”
Johan nodded. “Be careful not to break your heart.”
Varo forced himself to smile, even though his pride was a little tarnished by the advice of Johan that sounded childish in his ears.
“Lu still playing basketball?”
“Neg. I stopped going to college”
“Cause of shoulder injury that time?”
“No, just want to stop aja”
“I used to bet with Oliva, if you do not become captain of basketball again, our school team would lose”
“And I found out a few months later I recovered” replied Varo remembering the story of Olivia at the club when they first met. “Olivia udah ris”
“Olivia wishes you well, whereas I wish you a broken shoulder until one semester.”
Varo snorted while Johan shrugged. “The bet is one hundred thousand, for my kayak High School boy, one hundred thousand is bige” said Johan kalem. “But yes still I lost bet”
“Thanks to Olivia and her good wishes” reply Varo sarcas. “But, I think Olivia knows a lot about me”
“Pastile. You will have a bad reputation when SMA” joked Johan while laughing. Varo forced himself to laugh, even though it actually sounded stiff.
“Emang who is the child who does not know Alvaro, captain of the red and white high school basketball?” added Johan making Varo silent.
Although it was a joke, but Varo would not defend himself by throwing another joke. For Varo, his high school days were the darkest of his life, and were at the root of all the explanations for why he grew up to be a cold man.
“In SMA first you extracurricular what?” ask Varo to try to change the subject.
“Gue used to exkul pisik” replied Johan. “Cuman fitting lecture enter business management. Bokap I want me to nerusin his company.”
Varo snorted, making Johan turn away. “Lu too?”
“I burned the company bokap” murmured Varo.
“Same. I'm the second kid. I think it's just my sister who takes care of the company, I know I'm the one who gets it. Because I'm a boy. Bokap I still adheres to the system; guy is the leader”
“Bokap you crazy” says Varo honestly.
“Emang. I was almost betrothed to Olivia. Fortunately Olivia was not narrow-minded. So Olivis was brought to England”
“Gue thinks Olivia moved because her parents died?” reply Varo confused.
Johan nodded. “That's the main reason”
“Olivia's parents died because of what?”
“Accident” replied Johan, his expression turning twice as serious. “Lu inget consecutive accidents in senopati area, until splashy so our talk fitting SMA first?”
“Inget. Because the street lights collapsed, right?”
Johan nodded. “Older Olivia victim. Olivia, too, she's safe. She was in a coma for a week and after being taken to England for treatment, Olivia now lives with her aunt. Single mother.”
Varo is stunned, not expecting that much detail Olivia's tragic life story.
“Every time Olivia gets in the car, she likes to roll out the glass windows and take her hand for a while”
“Gue. He did that yesterday. She likes to catch wind huh?”
“No, not because of that. Olivia had the trauma of riding in a car, but now it has improved a bit, just so she has a habit of going down the glass and passing hands for a while. Because it can make him comfortable and safe” explained Johan. “Lu know not why the accident, Olivia can survive?”
Varo shook his head, knowing the news of the accident was always the topic of discussion at the time because the cause was the collapse of the street lights, making many people worried if the same situation happened again. But Varo never knew there were survivors of the accident.
“At that time Olivia opened the car window and when the car turned around, she could crawl out. Just that, his parents burned right in front of his eyes.”
Silent.
“Why did you story this all to me?” asked Varo a bit confused what kind of response to the story.
“Because I see, you're interested in Olivia…..Am I wrong?” asked Johan successfully made Varo speechless without a sound.
