Al-Azhar University was founded by the Fatimiah Dynasty. At the beginning of its construction Al-Azhar University was just an ordinary mosque in Cairo, Egypt. Al-Azhar Mosque was built in 970-972 AD. The name Al-Azhar refers to the name of the daughter of Prophet Muhammad SAW, Fatimah Az-Zahra.

The beginning of the birth of Al-Azhar University began when Caliph Abu Al-Manshur Nizar Al-Aziz succeeded in bringing the Fatimiah Dynasty to its peak (975-996 AD). Al-Aziz was the fifth caliph of the Fatimid dynasty, and the first caliph to occupy North Africa. The success of the Fatimiah Dynasty made it the largest kingdom in the Eastern Mediterranean region, even defeating the Abbasid Dynasty at that time. Under the leadership of Al-Aziz, Al-Azhar Mosque began to function as a place of Islamic teaching such as al-Qur’an and darul hikam.

After the Fatimid dynasty collapsed in 1171 AD due to the attack of Caliph Salahudin Al-Ayyyubi of the Ayyubid Dynasty, teaching activities at the Al-Azhar Mosque had been temporarily halted. Then during the reign of the Mamelic Dynasty in 1260 AD Al-Azhar Mosque was later re-functioned as a place of teaching. Along with the development of not only Islamic religious sciences are taught, but also other sciences such as mathematics, medicine, psychology, economics, engineering, and so on.

Al-Azhar Mosque later received university status and changed its name to Al-Azhar University in 1930 AD. Al-Azhar University later published scientific journals and added several new disciplines to its curriculum. In 1950 Al-Azhar University had only three faculties namely the Faculty of Islamic Law, the Faculty of Usluhudin, and the Faculty of Arabic Language. In 1961 Al-Azhar University opened new faculties outside Islamic studies such as the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Engineering, and many more.

Al-Azhar University now has a slightly different education system. There is no attendance and students are free to choose the preferred lecturer. Women and men are not taught in the same class.

But in its development, now Al-Azhar Mosque developed into Al-Azhar University which is a center of learning Islamic religious sciences from all over the world.

In Arabic, the name Al-Azhar means "The most magnificent mosque". That said, this name not only describes the architectural beauty of the mosque, but also has a philosophy related to the history of Islam.

This name comes from the nickname Fatimah az-Zahra, daughter of Prophet Muhammad SAW where the word az-Zahra in the name Fatimah means "Gemerlap or Magnificent".

The magnificent mosque, which was successfully built in just two years, has been transformed into one of the prestigious universities in the world.

Al-Azhar mosque and Al-Azhar University are in the same area, but still have different functions. Al-Azhar University is located not far from the mosque, which is only a few buildings across from the mosque building.

Al-Azhar Mosque has undergone several renovations. Renovations carried out gradually in each period of government resulted in a variety of architectural styles of buildings. So drawn on the differences in architectural styles of minarets that symbolize the dynasties that once ruled in Egypt.

Having a large field covered with beautiful white marble, this mosque was once used as a place of worship as well as a place to learn about Arabic and the Quran. From this place can also be seen three magnificent minarets of the mosque which were made in 1340, 1469, and 1510 respectively.

The most interesting minaret is the minaret made by Sultan Al-Ghuri in 1510 because there are two twin spires on it.
