Chapter 3: Dawn Academy (1)
Lorist slept soundly the entire night until he was awakened during the day the next day by the voices in the main hall. Lazily lying beside the bed, he waited for a while until the hall had calmed down before slowly pulling himself out of bed.
A new set of clothes lay by the bedside, among which included some grey linen underwear, dark green wool shirts, black leather vests, grey wool coats, and a dark green woolen shirt, some white socks and a pair of black pants. There was also a pair of black leather boots next to the clothes.
Lorist was very satisfied with Louise's purchase; he knew what she liked the most: dark, naked clothes. He thought the other mercenaries who often wore bright colors looked even more ridiculous than clowns. However, those sets of clothes should not be cheap. It may cost more than one gold coin.
Fully dressed and wearing his new boots, he stuffed two daggers into his boots and equipped a mini arrow on his left arm. He then pinned his short sword to his belt buckle and swung the long sword on his back. Ruffling his purse and waist bag, he checked if he left the belongings in the room before locking the door behind him and heading down.
The lunch hour was over and there were only about twenty people chatting and drinking in the main hall as they listened to Mike sing "The War of the Gods" in a sad tone. It is an epic poem that depicts the conflict between the Magi and the gods thousands of years ago. Only, the poet was sympathetic to the gods. The author describes the man led by the magi as a frenzied assailant, and mourns the fall of the gods. Alongside this one flaw, the poem has a beautiful language, an unexpected storyline, as well as a brilliant move. The story has always captivated the people of Grindia and has even been adapted into stage plays, musicals, as well as other entertaining performances at bars.
Lorist went to the empty table and sat down. Several acquaintances raised their cups and quietly toasted in greeting, before focusing their attention on Mike's performance.
Louise appeared in front of the table and said in a low voice, "When I see you sleep well in the morning, I cannot wake you up. You look great in these clothes. Is that fitting? ”
Nodding, Lorist said, "They are great. Thank you very much. Is there anything I should fill with my stomach? ”
“We just got a stack of new cod. Do you want one?"
"Alright, have McDuffin fry the fish for me. I want rib soup, one omelet rice with sausage and a cup of blackcurrant beer too. I'm going to the academy this afternoon. ”
"Coming soon . I'll make McDuffin work faster because you'll be busy. ”
"Wait," call Lorist when Louise is just about to leave. “I'm in no hurry to go to the academy later. Louise, I want a room for a few more nights, and leave my laundry inside after it's done. Get Mike a cup of beer too and put it on my tab. ”
Full and satisfied, Lorist walked out of the inn and waited for a while on the road until he saw a horse carriage taxi passing by.
Quickly waving, Lorist said, “Take me to Dawn Academy. ”
"Alright, it'll be fifteen coppers. Be sitting. "Chocolate-clothed drivers flicked the thip and Delemont Striped Horse ran towards the destination.
After about ten minutes, the horse carriage stopped in front of the entrance of the academy. Lorist paid the driver one silver coin, which was worth 20 copper, with five copper as a tip for the driver. The driver showered him with gratitude as he got off the train.
Dawn Academy is located in the western part of the Academy Sector. It offers courses in various disciplines and is ranked fifth among the twenty academies in Morante City and ninth among all academies in the Grindia Continent.
A statue of a girl who was about twelve to thirteen years old killing a giant dragon with a jeweled sword could be seen at the entrance. This brave young girl was the Goddess Dawn Loria. She was the daughter of Singwa, the god of light, sun and war, and Daphlyn, the Silver Goddess. In the Grindia myth, it is said that the Dark Dragon King hates the lights that Singwa emits as he patrols the world. Through a trap, he managed to send five heavenly horses pulling Singwa's carriage down the path to the Abyss. At this critical moment, Loria acted and managed to kill the Dark Dragon King, returning the horses to their normal trajectory, allowing the sun god to once again illuminate the sky of darkness. It was at that time that Loria was given the title of Goddess Dawn.
Dawn, the time of day of rest, the time that signals the coming of light. In the Grindia myth, Loria the Dawn Goddess is a symbol of courage and hope.
Surrounding the gigantic statue that was jokingly interpreted by some of the academy students as a ber dragon pushing a young girl, Lorist stood right in front of the main entrance of the academy. The entrance of the academy did not have any gates or doors. It only consisted of statues and boulevard that led directly to the academy.
Sighing, he reached into his waist bag and took out an iron badge that was about an inch in size and pinned it in front of his chest. On the black badge was a picture embossed of a huge sword with three stars on top of the blade. It represented his Three Star Iron Battle Force rank.
There was nothing he could do about it: one had to wear one's Battle Force badge to enter the academy. In addition, professors, faculty, and students have their own badges that must be worn at all times within the building.
Lorist put up another badge next to his Battle Force badge. Above it was an image of a long sword falling directly to the ground with the sun half-rising behind the horizon in the background. This badge was gold in color unlike his Battle Force badge. It represented his status as a dual instructor in both swordsmanship and the revival of the War Forces.
Some teenagers wearing academy uniforms came from the face. They all need to be new students. Lorist remembered that recruitment day was almost a month ago. As he watched these teenagers jump around in excitement, he reminisced about his own time as a student here ten years ago. Time really flows quickly and endlessly.
Lorist simply nodded and smiled before continuing. At Dawn Academy, students are required to pay homage to the instructor.
Some chatter sounds could be heard behind Lorist. "That must be Instructor Locke, the legendary Black Gold Iron ranked Instructor of our academy!"
“He has a gold instructor badge even with his Battle Force at the Three Star Iron rank. The rumors were true ... I even heard that he was invincible against the Silver Swordsman, giving him the nickname 'Undefeated Silverman'! ”
“I really hope that my Battle Force instructor will become him .. I heard that all of his students three years in a row have awakened their Battle Strength without fail! They were already at the Iron rank now. ”
"I heard the seniors say …"
……
In the Grindia Continent, one's Battle Strength and swordsmanship represented one's strength. The four different ranks of the War Force included Bronze, Iron, Silver and Gold, which were further divided into three sub-levels for each rank. Beyond that were the level of Blademasters and Sword Saints. People like Lorist who had been stuck at the Three Stars Iron rank for over three years were far and few. In addition to breaking through to the Blademaster level, which required a deep level of insight, when one reached the third star level of their rank, their War Forces would usually break through to the next rank quite easily. This was why Lorist was reviled in the academy.
Ten years ago, a carriage with a roaring bear emblem brought a 14-year-old noble youth from the Krissen Empire to Dawn Academy. McDuffin, who was selling food at the entrance of the academy with his parents, clearly remembered the scene. The young man who came down from the carriage had a bad expression, unwilling on his face. He looked at McDuffin and his family with disdain. The young man was very cold and arrogant.
Even a month later, McDuffin heard that the young man had a fight with someone at the academy and was severely beaten. He had to rest in bed for three whole months.
The next time he met the young man, McDuffin saw no trace of who he was before; in front of him stood a young man, an intelligent youth whose face exuded an endless curiosity. He reached out his hand towards McDuffin and said, “Hai, nice to meet you. I'm Norton Lorist. What's yourname?"
In the coming months, McDuffin learned that Lorist was friends with him because he could no longer bear the food provided by the academy. Stale rice, black bread, mashed potatoes and vegetable soup are served for all three meals each day. Lorist had no choice but to go to the McDuffin tavern for some variety to satisfy his desires.
McDuffin could not forget the moment when Lorist showed his culinary skills at his family stall for the first time. His parents stared wide-eyed at the dishes he cooked that exuded a mouth-watering fragrance. Even his brothers had their eyes fixated on food.
At the time, McDuffin's parents' stall sold only apples and baked potatoes as well as smoked sausage, soybeans and some other common dishes. They were quite satisfied with the daily income of some large silver coins. But after Lorist's arrival, their stall quickly became one of the must-visit places for food in the Academy Sector, reaching the peak of its profits.
The young McDuffin quickly learned all of Lorist's "home dish" which was also happy to teach him everything. Lorist himself pointed out that McDuffin had gastronomy. The young McDuffin even believes that Lorist's hometown is a haven for good food and plans to go "pilgrimage" to the food's sacred land.
When Lorist finally felt enough with McDuffin's nagging disorder, the, he told McDuffin that the recipes came from a secret cookbook passed down only in his family and that no one else in his hometown could make such a meal. Too bad so many of the materials listed in the book are no longer found. But Lorist easily improvised and cooked up delicious dish after dish.
It was at this time that McDuffin gave up his desire to visit Lorist's hometown.
Time passed nonstop and five years passed quickly. After saving large sums, McDuffin's parents stopped running food stalls and bought a small farm in the countryside to do the farming and his siblings joined in. McDuffin also got a well-paying job as head chef for the Red Grace Inn. Lorist was only nineteen back then and his Battle Strength was at the Second Star Iron rank. He was promoted to an instructor by the academy due to his star sword skill and was seen as a developing talent with a bright path ahead of him.
Five years later, McDuffin was still the head chef of the inn while Lorist became a legendary figure in the academy, due to the qualifications of his two instructors. However, with his Three Star Iron Battle Troop unable to break through, he became the laughingstock of the academy. With much scorn and humiliation, his comrades referred to him as a helpless genius swordsman.
Normally, the sword instructors of the academy from the higher ranked academies were usually of Silver rank and above. Even more than that, though, given that Dawn Academy was ranked number nine out of all the other academies in the entire Grindia Continent with most of the other War Forces instructors at least being at the Silver Three Stars rank. Lorist was the only exception who was a double gold-ranked instructor with the Three Star Iron Battle Force, who easily gained the jealousy and hostility of his friends.
The reason he got the gold-ranked instructor badge was due to the fact that all of his students managed to awaken their War Forces for three consecutive years. This 100% success rate was unprecedented. Even only 25 of the 26 students from noble families who had their Battle Troops awakened in one course of the Blademaster Battle Troop. A failed person is considered to have a little power circulating in his blood. At the time, it was the highest success rate recorded for the War Force revival course. Normally, only two-thirds of the students could awaken their Battle Strength.
However, when Lorist was assigned to his first War Force awakening course, all 17 ordinary students who did not have instructors wanted to help successfully awaken their War Forces one year later. The second class attended by 31 other people also had a 100% success rate%. During the third year, the course was attended by 59 people, among whom included 10 students of noble descent who went out of their way to register for the course. But, most striking was the three students who had previously failed to awaken their Battle Strength.
One would still have a chance to awaken their Battle Strength even after the first failed attempt, albeit with a lower success rate. However, a year later, the three of them managed to awaken their Battle Strength. This not only shocked the people in the academy, it also greatly shocked the entire City of Morante. Lorist had since become a legend that managed to awaken the Battle Strength of the three students who had failed once, earning him the badge of his golden War Force instructor.
As for his golden sword arts instructor badge, Lorist got it from winning the duel. He had fought with the students as well as the instructors of the Silver rank over a hundred times without a single loss, earning him the nickname "Unbeatable Silver".
Walking along the boulevard, Lorist thought back in every effort, profit, loss, happiness and sadness during his ten years in the academy with an atmosphere of sentiment and nostalgia.
