Chapter 9: Dynamic Vision
In the sixth year of his new life when his body was currently 20 years old, Lorist discovered something disturbing.
Lorist had fared quite well over the past few years and had grown from a lowly task running a Bronze mercenary to a veteran of an Iron ranked mercenary.
Lorist was also quite famous at Dawn Academy, given that he applied for three other professions after completing the study of magical beasts and courses in herbalism, among which included archaeology, destruction exploration as well as language studies. After being among the mercenary ranks for some time, he began to understand that the legends surrounding the magical civilization were not bottomless and true to some extent.
During one of his visits with his friends a year earlier, Lorist visited small, excavated ruins said to be towers that were once the residence of magus. The colossal tower that reached beyond the clouds described in the books no longer stood, but the discovery of the three underground floors shocked them. The large, smooth walls made of stainless steel glistened like mirrors, as if they had faded away from the passage of time. Lines stretched across the floor to the walls and intersected to form intricate three-dimensional diagrams of magical formations and neatly arranged chunks of stone with ancient fairy script could be seen around. It can be a capstone that serves as the basis of magical formation.
Every single one of his group dreamed of obtaining boundless wealth and fame to find this destruction, but felt it was not very realistic. Most of the ruins that were once inhabited by humans have been excavated and studied and are no longer of much value with only a few exceptions that may be hidden somewhere in the dense forest, mountains or quiet mountains. Given their abilities and the ferocious beasts lurking around such an area, however, it would be a suicide attempt. They can only daydream in vain because of the glory and wealth awaited.
Yet Lorist was overjoyed and advanced enthusiastically. After reading 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' in her past life, she had always been fascinated with magic and wanted to become a witch herself. It was a pity that he arrived at the Grindia Continent a little late. Had he crossed over to several thousand years earlier into the magic age, his dream of becoming a great magus might have been realized.
At that moment, Lorist, who had just obtained his qualifications in the study of magical beasts and herbalism, wondered which course to follow next. Given that Dawn Academy's archaeology, language studies and destruction exploration courses are quite highly ranked, he decided to enroll for them during the next semester.
Exploration of the ruins refers to the study and study of architecture and the purpose of buildings abandoned since the magic age as well as ways to carefully excavate the ruins as much as possible to avoid damaging the ruins. Archaeology deals with the differentiation and handling of artifacts found in ruins and is concerned with determining the purpose and value of such artifacts. The study of languages is the most difficult of the three, given that the language of the fairies, the dragons, is, the gremlin used by the magi was said to contain mystical powers and people without magical ties could not truly understand the language; even if one managed to learn a few words, one could not understand the language, he would only be able to make the same sound but could not reproduce the ancient power contained within each word.
These magical languages cannot be easily passed down from generation to generation. But the magi of that time often wrote the manuscripts of these languages to stone tablets to record important information. Today, the field of language studies can only rely on characters on tablets to slowly decipher the meaning of those words by matching images sometimes found next to characters. By far, the greatest achievement in the field of language studies is the ability to distinguish fairy language words from gremlin. However not much progress was made in understanding the dragon language.
These three courses are closely interrelated. Lorist cynically summed up the essence of these three paths into two words: great robbery. The only difference between this and the actual tomb robbery was that it was legally authorized by various powers on the continent and it was a common practice for people to attack and explore such ruins it was, looting the artifacts inside and auctioning them off to gain wealth and fame. However, archaeologists are not satisfied with such phenomena and consider such actions destructive and unethical.
Lorist believed that once he obtained that qualification, he would live a somewhat adventurous life as a researcher and explorer, venturing across the continent in search of pleasure. What he did not expect was that the act of applying for all three courses would draw so much attention to him. If he graduated with qualifications in seven professional courses, while he might not be the first in the academy's history to do so, he wouldn't be too far off from being the last.
Attending these courses did not weigh too much on Lorist. What he was really worried about was the War Force's training being hampered due to the lack of the following Blazing Battle power manuals to a higher level.
This is not an unusual occurrence in Grindia. The descendants of the noble families deliberately carried the Battle Style manuals or swordsmanship in their parts because they were afraid of leaked techniques and would only ask for other manuals when they reached a certain level. But Lorist couldn't do it because he had already lost contact with his family for so many years. The Krissen Empire in the north was in a lot of chaos due to the infighting between the three imperial princes and causing Lorist to be unable to reach his family. Seeing that the conflict was likely to continue for a few more years, he wouldn't be so foolish as to wait and do nothing until the day he managed to contact his family finally arrived.
Even if he had the patience to wait, he would have to keep training to keep his body in peak condition. Already resigned to his situation, he motivated himself to train other abilities.
Just a few months after he crossed paths and began practicing swordsmanship, he noticed that this body had a unique talent for dynamic vision: it was a: it was the ability to accurately focus and see the tracks of objects moving at high speeds.
The man arrogantly told Lorist that he would not be able to do what he did and explained that his natural talent of dynamic vision made fast moving objects appear slow in his eyes. That was why he could easily dodge bullets and was practically invincible when he brought down Lorist's teammate. The only thing he did not expect was Lorist's suicide bombing and being trapped in a corner without being able to do anything in retaliation.
Lorist was truly envious of the man's natural talent but was told that it could be learned with adequate training. He said that the pilot also needed to have good dynamic vision but the training process was sickening for most people and encouraged Lorist to try it out and experience it for himself.
The man sighed and continued to say that his natural dynamic vision was not what one would get from training because it put a lot of pressure on the mind. Although the vision one can gain from training is clearly inferior to vision, it is more than enough for the average person for most intents and purposes.
At that moment, Lorist did not understand why the man sighed and read on the internet about abilities and found many training methods that could be used to train one's dynamic vision. One method involves sitting in a chair that spins at very high speed and someone holding a large cardboard with the words written next to the chair and trying to read the words on the card while spinning. In just ten minutes after trying it, he collapsed feeling intense vertigo and discomfort and was unable to eat for two days.
It is said that if one survives through training, in time, one will be able to clearly see the faces of the passengers through the windows of a speeding train.
But the great discomfort caused by the training made Lorist think that such an ability was not worth the pain. He then gave up on training.
However, the present Lorist, fully understood why the man sighed that day.
At first he was happy to discover that his new body had this ability. Through his intense focus, he could even see every wing of a fly passing by. In the sword battle, no matter how agile and fast the opponent was, Lorist only sensed a slow-moving sword and could easily come out with a counter to break his opponent's movements.
However, the utilization of this ability was extremely mentally exhausting. Before, he could not use it for too long. However, as he increasingly uses this ability, he notices that his mental endurance increases with the amount of time he has to maintain his dynamic vision. Even when he was not in deep focus, his feelings for the surroundings had become increasingly sensitive; a fact he discovered during one of his magical beast hunts.
The main problem, however, was that his body's reaction was unable to catch up with his feelings. When he first discovered this ability, his Battle Force was ranked One Bronze Star. For a while he was still able to keep up with his dynamic vision that was getting better as his Battle Force grew and was unrivalled among his friends in the field of swordsmanship, which led to him being appointed as an assistant swordsmanship instructor.
But ever since he was stuck at the Three Stars iron level, Lorist found that his movements were unable to keep up with his increasingly improved dynamic vision. In time, his body was no longer able to keep up with his reaction time.
Given his performance as an assistant instructor the year before, he was later promoted to full instructor. But that incident caused many Silver rank instructors and students a lot of dissatisfaction and even prompted many Silver rank students to challenge him to a duel. It was then that Lorist first faced the problem of his body's movement speed.
Given the total defeat of the first few Silver ranked students who challenged Lorist on behalf of the swordsmanship instructor, the instructor decided to join his own. When the duel began, Lorist began to feel pressure; this was a man who had rich experience in real-life combat and was unlike some people whose skills were visually impressive but completely impractical. Each attack was quick, destructive, and direct. Some of his movements were even willing to suffer a small attack in order to get bigger!
Under Lorist's intense concentration, the enemy's movements were broken one by one. For the people watching the duel, Lorist's movements were flexible and flawless. But he himself sensed the opposite: there were several times when he clearly found a weak point in his opponent's attack but his body could not move in time. There were also several times when he could clearly see the trajectory of the sword but could only avoid it. The duel only ended in a narrow victory.
