Javanese mythology (Queen of the North Coast)


The Queen of the North Sea is a legendary figure of the north sea ruler of Java island, especially in the north of Pekalongan, Central Java. In the belief of the Pekalongan people, the name of the Queen of the North Sea is actually Goddess Lanjar. Lanjar is a woman who is divorced from her husband at a young age and has no children.[1]

Pekalongan people in particular still have a strong belief in the figure of Dewi Lanjar. For example, if there is a child missing while playing on the beach, people believe that the child was brought by Dewi Lanjar. It is said that the location of the palace of Dewi Lanjar is located on Pekalongan beach next to the Slamaran river.[1]

In ancient times in Pekalongan lived a beautiful princess named Dewi Rara Kuning. She had become a widow at a very young age because her husband died some time after their marriage. That is why Dewi Rara Kuning then famous as Dewi Lanjar. Because of this, Dewi Lanjar decided to leave her hometown so as not to be constantly veiled.[1]


Upon arrival at the Opak river, he met the Mataram King Panembahan Senopati with the ascetic Mahapatih Singaranu floating on the river water. Dewi Lanjar expressed her heart and said she would not marry again. Panembahan Senopati and Mahapatih Singoranu felt sorry for him then advised him to stay on the South Coast facing Ratu Kidul. Next they separated, Panembahan Senopati and his patih continued their ascetic path down the Opak river while Dewi Lanjar headed for the South Coast. He persevered then moksa and met with Ratu Kidul.[1]


In the meeting, Dewi Lanjar pleaded to be a member of Kanjeng Ratu Kidul, Ratu Kidul did not mind. One day, Dewi Lanjar with the genie army was ordered to disrupt and prevent Raden Bahu who was opening the Gambiren forest (now around Pekalongan anim bridge and Sorogenen village). However, Raden Bahu was not affected by all the temptations of Dewi Lanjar and her genie army. Unsuccessful to fulfill the task, Dewi Lanjar decided not to return to the South Coast, but asked Raden Bahu permission to be able to live in Pekalongan. It was approved both by Raden Bahu and by Ratu Kidul. Dewi Lanjar is allowed to live on the north coast of Central Java, especially in Pekalongan.[1]


The Queen of the North Sea is featured in Wiro Sableng's novel series The Queen of the North Sea's Retaliation.[2]


Queen of the North Coast and Dewi Lanjar is the title of the comic series of Raja by Mansyur Daman. Dewi Lanjar is said to be a female swordsman.[3]


Dewi Lanjar was featured in the first two chapters of the Secret of Love novel, Ki Joko Bodo Kawin With Jin by Buanergis Muryono, a writer from Jepara.

The name of Dewi Lanjar is often used as a tip for gifts, amulets, agate, and so on.
