Max is forced to come to Lusy, because he had not previously succeeded in taking Cheryl from Joya. Max had been to Indonesia and wanted to take Cheryl, but because Joya had a custody letter and she was a legal godmother, making Max unable to pucker up and finally choosing to go back to see Lusy.
