In the late 19th century, a British couple whose wife gave birth to a baby before fleeing a shipwreck, and ended up near an uncharted rainforest on the Congo coast.
The couple built a tree house from the wreckage of the ship.
Meanwhile, the leader of a group of gorillas, Kerchak, plays with his son until a leopard named Sabor kills him.
Soon after, the couple Kerchak Kala hears the cry of the baby's son and finds a tree house, where he discovers that Sabor has killed the couple as well.
Kala meets Sabor and runs away with the baby she has.
Kala brought the baby back to his army to be raised as his own, an act that Kerchak disliked. Kala adopted a human child, naming him Tarzan.
When he was five years old, Tarzan began befriending other animals, including his adoptive cousins and nephews Kala and Kerchak as well as a paranoid African male elephant named Tantor; but he was treated with hostility due to physical differences, so he tried hard to improve himself.
As a young adult, Tarzan managed to kill Sabor with the spear he made, earning Kerchak's respect.
One day, the gorilla's peaceful life is interrupted by the arrival of a team of British explorers, consisting of Professor Porter, his daughter Jane, and their tour guide, a hunter named Clayton.
Explorers looking to study gorillas. Jane is accidentally separated from the group and pursued by an army of mandrill, with Tarzan rescuing her.
Tarzan studies Jane and realizes that she resembles him. Jane leads Tarzan to their camp, where Porter and Clayton take an interest in him.
Porter views Tarzan as an opportunity for scientific advancement, while Clayton wants to persuade Tarzan to take him to the gorillas.
Kerchak sternly warns Tarzan to stay away from them, but Tarzan disobeys his warning and continues to return to the camp, where Porter and Clayton taught him how to speak English and what the human world was like.
Over time, Tarzan and Jane gradually begin to fall in love. Because of Kerchak, Tarzan still refused to lead the explorers to the gorillas.
The cruiser soon returned to retrieve it.
Jane asks Tarzan to return with them to England, but Tarzan asks Jane to stay with him when Jane says that it is unlikely they will return.
Clayton convinces Tarzan that Jane will stay with him if he takes them to the gorilla.
Tarzan agrees and leads the three to a nesting site, while Terk and Tantor lure Kerchak to prevent him from attacking humans.
Suddenly, Kerchak returns to see them and tries to attack, but Tarzan holds him back with a chokehold, allowing Porter and Clayton to escape.
An angry Kerchak accuses Tarzan of betraying his troops, causing Tarzan to flee in guilt. Kala takes Tarzan to the tree house, where he shows him about his true past.
In the end, Tarzan wears a suit that once belonged to his father, signifying his decision to go to England, before he and Kala share a bitter goodbye.
When Tarzan boards the ship with Jane and Porter, they are all ambushed by Clayton and his gang of traitorous hired criminals.
Clayton reveals his plan of how he wished and planned to capture the gorillas, and he only uses Porter for his way to go to the forest.
He then uses Tarzan to find a nesting place and locks Tarzan, Jane, and Porter to prevent them from interfering.
Tarzan manages to escape with the support of Terk and Tantor and returns to the forest to save the gorillas.
During the battle, Clayton shot Kerchak in the chest. Tarzan fights Clayton across the treetops.
Although Tarzan saves Clayton's life and destroys his rifle, Clayton tries to kill him with his machete.
Tarzan then traps Clayton with the vines, but Clayton attempts to free himself and cut off all the vines.
In the process, Clayton fell from a tree as vines crept around his neck, hung him and killed him.
Tarzan then accompanied Kerchak, who confirmed him as his son and died peacefully from his injuries.
The next day, Jane and her father prepare to leave on the ship, but Tarzan stays behind with an army of gorillas.
As the ship departs, Porter encourages his daughter to stay with Tarzan, and Jane jumps overboard to meet Tarzan with her father soon following him.
Porter reunites with Tarzan and begins their new life together.
