Best Son-in-law

Best Son-in-law
Chandra Juandi

The sound of an object clashing sounded so loud in Chandra Juandi's ear. Then followed by the sound of a metal squeak that makes the feathers stand and ended with a big bang.

All the four-wheeled vehicles in front of him stopped abruptly. The roar of the engine, the squeaking friction between the tire rubber with asphalt, and the sound of the horn honking each other as if racing to be the fastest to meet the air.

Then, everything became quiet and gripping as if time were running slow.

One by one, people got out of their vehicles. Then they began to whisper, talk, then shout calling from the front row.

A traffic accident.

At first, Chandra is reluctant to get out of the car because she has to conserve her energy before handling the major operation she is about to perform. However, seeing people looking panicked and asking for help, his soul as a doctor felt called upon.

Chandra hurried down from his car, running to the scene. Not far from there, he was silent to see the accident.

A single accident. A car looks upside down, its windshield is broken, one of its rear tires is dislodged. Smoke rises from the front of the car.

The condition of the badly damaged car makes Chandra skeptical whether the driver is still safe. His body moved closer to the vehicle. He bent down and looked at the driver's condition. The driver seemed to groan in pain with a facial expression that endured the pain in his head.

Chandra saw two men trying to pull the driver out. But they can't do it. One of them shouted that the driver's seatbelt could not be removed.

Chandra immediately walked around the front of the car. He broke the windshield of the car. From there, he inserted his body, grabbed the rider's seatbelt and released it. Then, he repeatedly pushed the rider out through the open door next to the rider.

The rider was immediately transported by two men who tried to save him.

Chandra pulled her body, about to come out. However, his movements stopped once he realized that there was a rest of the window glass stuck on his back.

Along with the blood seeping out of his shirt, a piercing pain he felt. Chandra groans in pain. While enduring the pain, he tried to remain calm. The man set his breath in the car which began to be filled with smoke, a stuffy feeling, and heat.

People around the car screamed in panic, telling him to get out immediately. However, no matter how hard he tried, the glass stuck like a fishing hook. The more he forced his way out, the deeper the glass pierced him.

Inevitably he had to move forward first to break away, then back backwards with a lower body position.

Normally, the pain felt can make people faint. However, the adrenaline that is pumped in the body makes him forget the pain. Chandra managed to escape the glass. He was about to retreat out in a lower position, but unfortunately…

The sound of explosions rang out so loudly in his ears. In an instant, flames spread out and burned his entire body.

Hot air is hell.

Only darkness now covers him.

Chilly. One thing Chandra felt when his consciousness returned. Slowly he opened his eyes. Everything looks blurry. He opened his eyes to see clearly. At the same time, a sound was heard.

When everything was clear, the voice was now heard clearly. A woman screamed at him.

“Basic son-in-law useless! You are an ordinary person, not as good as your wife, usually makes it difficult to be just as embarrassed! Why don't you die and disappear from before me anyway!?”

Dazed, Chandra was trying to digest the situation. He clearly remembered that he should have died from the blast—or at least had been seriously injured. However, in what he currently considers a hospital, he is not in treatment.

His body is normal and healthy.

But he felt strange. The hand he saw, was unlike any hand he had known all along. His feet and height do not feel the same. He got up regardless of the woman who had been scolding him.

He looked in the mirror on one of the walls of the room. His face has changed.

What the hell's going on? Why has his body changed? Plastic surgery after an accident, or…

He moved into someone else's body?

When all these questions ran through his head. The woman called herself.

“Malah reflects.. Listen to your in-laws when you talk, Chandra Juandi!”

Sitting in the wrong seat in the hallway of the Emergency Unit not far from where he was conscious, Chandra tried to process the situation. The body he was currently using was definitely not his body. His physique was completely different from the body he was familiar with. His identity has also changed. All she knows is that Chandra Juandi is now a nurse, not a doctor.

Slipping his hands in front of his chest, eyes closed and thinking hard, Chandra found absolutely no sense that could explain his current situation. He only let out a long sigh inside that quiet passageway.

Suddenly, the situation suddenly crowded. Apparently the Emergency Unit was the arrival of a patient who had a traffic accident. Chandra can see clearly when a female patient brought in a push mattress crosses her.

Patients at first glance appear to only have an injury to the head. However, Chandra realizes there is something else. He immediately got up and followed the patient.

One of the guard doctors there, who is also the chief doctor named Edi, started ordering everyone to take necessary medical measures, “Cek all his vital signs, lest anyone be missed!”

A nurse on the right side of the bed reported the results of her examination, “Doctor, the patient's blood pressure is normal 120mmHg/80mmHG, heart rate is 170/min, normal temperature, respiration is slightly inhibited.” The nurse then fell silent.

“What's up, why are you silent!?” ask Dr. Edi, riled up.

“He had shortness of breath,” continued the nurse.

“It wasn't just plain shortness of breath. Look, there's swelling on his chest. He had a rib fracture,” cut Chandra who suddenly got into the conversation.

He looks agitated at the patient's condition because he knows the patient's life is being threatened.

“Do not let the patient wait too long, we must immediately perform the action Thorakostomi.”

Everyone suddenly fell silent, some were lyrically interlocking with each other. How not? The Chandra they knew was an ordinary nurse with no advantages whatsoever. You could say he is a lousy nurse who often makes mistakes in trivial things though.

But, right now, he suddenly said something that seemed impossible to say by a Chandra they knew.

“Ngapain you follow!?” said doctor Edi, “Do not know, do not make the situation more runyam! Do you know who this patient is? She's Aluna Kusuma, the daughter of the director of the hospital where we work! If he's why-why because of your poor diagnosis, can you take responsibility?!”

"Quickly take the patient to the chest x-ray room, the faster we move, the better," Dr. Edi ordered as he walked in haste.

Arriving at the cxr room, the patient is placed in the middle of the room for shooting. Shortly after the image had been produced, Dr. Edi's face looked deathly pale.

What Chandra said turned out to be true: The ribcage fracture¹ and worse yet it was the flail chest and caused the condition Hematothorax⁴ in the patient. This is seen from the number of black stains that cover almost half the pleura⁵ cavity.

Dr. Edi ordered the nurse to install an oxygen hose and take him to the ICU room. It is too risky to perform surgery at this time, due to severe bleeding. The patient may lose his life on the operating table. Had he listened to Chandra's advice, the hope of saving Aluna would have been great.
