"We both got married without the blessing of our parents. We both ran away from home." I was stunned to hear Mother's words.
"So, the marriage of Mom and Dad is not legal?" I don't think they ever did anything wrong.
"Initially yes, because you don't want to be a mother's marriage guardian. Over time they were forced to accept our marriage. Father and Mother remarry with legal guardians."
"We both felt sinful, after which they left both of us." Father added.
"Our parents were hands off about both of our household lives. They also did not want to greet us, nor were we ever welcome at home. They said that we were ungrateful children. In fact, we both intend to worship in marriage." Mom wiped the corner of her eye.
"Your grandmother's grandfather from the Father is a loan shark in the village. That's why your Mom's parents don't agree. While your mother's grandparents were among the borrowers of your parents." I'm trying to digest Mom's words.
"Tttt-tung-wait a minute! So, your parents are loan sharks, while your parents are the borrowers? That's why you two aren't approved?"
"Yes, that's. They easily broke the rope. Since then, Mom and Dad have never visited our parents again. We don't know about their lives now. We don't know if they're alive or not." Mother was trying to normalize her sobbing.
"How long has the wedding been unresolved, ma'am?"
"Almost two years." This time, my father answered.
"Our village, that small, simple house, is not the legacy of a great-grandfather like you said?" Mom shook her head slowly.
"No, the village is not where we live. After not being considered family again by your grandparents, we both decided to start over. Go all the way from our hometowns. The fight between us is not easy, son." Mother took her breath.
"So, you two don't know about the condition of Wulan's grandfather and grandmother either? Where's their village, Mom, sir? Wulan wants to see them all."
"So, maybe they're not in the village anymore. They could have been with the other kids. Your mother is three brothers, while you are two brothers." Obviously Mother again.
"Mother and Father's Villages are the same, right?" Both are compact.
"Give me the full address of Wulan's grandparents' house! If there's time, let Wulan search for their whereabouts."
"No need! You should never interfere in this matter. It's your parents' problem, you live quietly without knowing where they are now."
"Mom." He patted the back of his wife's hand.
"Mother and Father would like to be labeled as a child? They're your parents, you don't want to know about the condition of the four of them? What kind of children are you?" I got up from the seat, saying in a loud voice.
"Wulan, you don't know anything about the suffering of both of us. So just shut up! No need to interfere in our affairs!" Mother didn't lose out hard.
"Both of you, stop! Even quarreled over it. Wulan, it's all the past, we don't want to bring it up, son." You tried to calm me and my mother who started to get emotional.
"Wulan understands, sir. After all, they are still your parents and in-laws. It's worth your life to always be lacking, so, here's why. Don't want to know about each other's parents' condition."
"Don't be reckless, Wulan!"
Plaaakkk
Mom slapped my left cheek, it felt throbbing and painful. But, what hurts more is my heart that just found out about the dark past of both my parents and both grandparents.
"Mother, don't get emotional because of this!" He calmed his wife.
"The mouth is insolent, sir. Know what he's about sustenance? Just talk about it." My mother was still grumbling, she was not to blame.
"Where is the home of Mom and Dad? If you two don't want to find Grandpa's whereabouts, let me go find him alone." I was asked by a friend of mine at Junior High. They asked about the whereabouts of grandparents. Every school holiday, they always tell me about the fun of living with their grandparents. To be honest, hearing their stories I was envious. They always ask me, why don't I spend time in my grandparents' village? Curiosity that is so great, curiosity that has been stored for so long I can finally reveal.
"Here you go, don't reveal them again! They will never acknowledge you as a grandchild. Our marriage was sanctioned by force, they did not want us to sin because we were married without a legal guardian. We live three lives, son. After you marry Damar, have as many children as you can!"
"Dih, Mother .. indeed Wulan is a child-making machine. No need to switch the conversation, please tell the address of your hometown!" I'm still trying to persuade him.
"Later you tell me where our village really is. Father and Father in-laws' names. But, there's a condition, once you're married to Damar, I'll give you all that information."
"Wulan's tired of talking to you guys." The conditions of the father are too heavy. Me and Damar already have their own plans for it.
I sat on the edge of the bed, looking for the best solution.
"Jeez, Aunt Iren. You once said that Aunty is a friend of Mother since childhood, automatically they are one village. I have to ask Auntie." This face revealed a wide smile.
"Yeeeeeah." I jump in excitement. I finally have a way out. Tomorrow, I have to go to Aunt's house.
"Lan, have lunch, son!" Mom knocked on the room door.
"Males, Mum. Just go ahead."
The phone calls distract me. Kurogoh flat objects that are in the sling bag.
"Who is? His name is not saved." I was wondering, should I answer this phone call? Or am I just leaving it?
"When there's an important phone, what about it, huh?" my monologue is alone.
The ringing of the hape stopped, but, a few seconds later, his voice sounded again.
"I'd better answer, huh. Maybe you or who changed the number." I scroll the screen up.
"Hello, this is really Wulan, right?" The voice, it looked foreign but as if it had known.
"Who are you, huh?"
"When did you forget my voice? Now working in the capital. So arrogant huh."
"Loh, you know that I work in Jakarta? You who? Must be my school?" I'm second-guessing.
"Take a guess! I was your schoolmate. Exactly a high school friend."
"Who is? I didn't know many schoolmates before, let alone you being a man. I forgot who I was."
"Wulan, try to remember again! I'm a friend who always bullies you in class. Never hide your PR book when you study biology until you get a law." He reminds me of the old school days.
"Who is it?" I try to remember that time.
"Wait a minute, you're Aditya. Only Adit is bad to me."
"Woi, I'm not evil. Null and evil are different."
"No, you are evil. I'm being punished."
"Sorry, there was a reason why I did that to you."
"Reason? What's the reason?"
"I don't want to talk on the phone. I want to meet you in person."
"Want to meet in person?"
"Yes." Yeah."
"Wait a minute, do you know where my phone number is?"
"You don't need to know! Now I go up to the fourteenth floor. Open the door to your apartment for me!"
Call disconnected.
"Religion, Adit. Is he in Jakarta? And what's even more crazy, is he here?" I closed my unbelieving mouth to what he said on the phone earlier.
