Spinning War. Few people known to Cabe ever mentioned him by that name. The whole country has become chaotic; upheavals are everywhere. It was a dead end. The lesser magicians died, but a number of firerakes also died. The war eventually turned to the City of Knowledge.
It was well known that most of the Dragon King's strategies did not come from the emperor, but from the Purple Dragon, he who ruled the Penacles. Knowing that, the Masters planned a final attack. Yalak led a group to the Barren Land, the only true victory of the Masters. He must prevent the arrival of Brown and his remaining clan. Lochivar, the city of Grey Fog, will withstand the Black Wave. Nathan Bedlam will lead the others in an all-out assault on the city.
“They were betrayed from the beginning. Lochivar, long in the Grey Fog, turns into a traitor. Instead of holding back the dragons, they led a march towards the Penacles. If it wasn't for the Gryphons, they would have succeeded. We had never seen him like before, yet he met a traitor with a small mercenary and pushed them back. That's why he became the new ruler of Penacles.”
The longer, the more Cabe wanted to reach the city before anything else happened. As things stood, it was their only real hope for safety.
“Yalak also betrayed. By Azran. The thing Nathan called the boy attacked him from behind with the Horned Sword. Yalak never even knew he was there. For once, his future views have disappointed him.”
"How can the Dragon King master the sword?"
Gween smile. “Even Azran doesn't know everything. Brown, seeing his enemies in confusion, attempted to destroy them. The ruler of the Barren Land had chosen to fight in his human form, but his weapon was broken. Looking at the Horned Sword and knowing what it was, he struck Azran and stole his weapon. Is he going to kill her! It was then that I escaped, trying to join Nathan and secure the city before it was all gone. Brown, though ultimately defeating the Masters, could not catch up. His clan is very close to extinction. ”
The words of the Dragon King filled Cabe's mind. The hatred is so incredible. Cabe could feel a hint of compassion for the reptilian tyrant. Brown has created his own destruction.
Lady was looking at him amusedly. “I've heard of no babies. Your mother is dead, and Nathan must have stolen you from your father instead of seeing you fall into the dark. I'M-"
"Wait!" Something finally dawned on Cabe. "You see me?"
"Yes but-"
The idea seemed impossible. "You've been asleep for years, decades!"
The insinuation is not lost on him. "Yes. I understand what you mean, but I can't explain it.”
“I'm new in the middle of my third ten years! Yet your claims make me ancient! ”
Darkhorse has stopped her grazing. Although he was still wearing the shape of a real horse, the intelligence in those icy blue eyes was unmistakable. Ears are a concern. He also realized the implications.
The witch began to cast a simple spell. His fingers moved quickly as he spoke. "You only remember a normal life?"
"just that. No one ever commented on my growth.”
"Squeaky. I've seen that some spells have been cast into your form, but now so many parts of you that I can't read them. However, I can say that it is beneficial to you, if any. ”
"What am I doing?"
He erased the spell. Cabe felt as if tiny tendrils were gently slipping from his body. "I don't know." He looked to Darkhorse. “I'm open to suggestions from you.”
The black horse snorted. “How generous! However, to that child, I can only give two suggestions! The first is that the spell was most likely the work of Nathan Bedlam and may have been the reason for Cabe's strange childhood. You said it seemed useful. The second suggestion is that we put these issues aside until we reach Penacles. We may receive more information there.”
"Do you think the library will know anything about this?"
Black horses are not as usual scavenging on the ground. "I'm thinking of another."
His face became dark. "WHO?"
Cabe, unaware of the mood change, suddenly recalled. "of course! Simon!”
Gwen turned towards him. “Simon?”
He's nodding. “He brought Darkhorse to me. He said he'd be at Penacles.”
“Explain him.” Sounds cold.
"high. Wearing a robe and veil. I can't describe his face. It always looks blurry—”
"The mountain!" The scream was similar to the one Gwen let out when she found out about Darkhorse. “You received help from the more damned than Azran! You idiot!"
“Mrs Gwen, you also know the curse of Shade!” Darkhorse shouted even louder than Lady. Cabe was glad the road was empty.
"I'll kill him!"
"Ha! You will do more damage to this land! He has shifted the balance once again, Miss Gwen!”
He's kind of calm. "He's working with the Gryphon?"
“Until its destruction! You know that!"
“If time continues, it may happen soon.”
Confused, Cabe looked from one to the other. Their words mean nothing.
The lady stood up. “We have wasted quite a lot of time. Now that I know who else is waiting for us in the City of Knowledge, I am even more excited to be there.”
Not waiting for Cabe, he walked up to Darkhorse and rode on it. Cabe followed quickly, still wanting to know the reason for his behavior. She is clearly an emotional woman.
He looked at her, and her words were blunt and confusing. “He may be the only magician comparable to Nathan. He is also the most hated. Before this is over, he may be the savior as well as the destroyer of us all. It was part of his double nature.”
Darkhorse grew up before starting his run again. This time, there was no laughter.
THEY'RE APPROACHING Penacles. They know it from the tides that pass through them or move with them. Many looked agitated. Some groups, heading in opposite directions, argue with each other. Cabe couldn't catch their words, but he suspected he knew the cause.
Gwen also took note of the line of humanity. “Some people believe that Penacles is the safest place because the fort is very sturdy. Others believe that no one can withstand the attacks of the Dragon King.”
"Is there a war?"
He shook his head. “I have increased my hearing range. What I heard has been mentioned several times. Firedrake, Wyvern, and creatures so rotten that they have no name. All moved south of the Tyber Mountains, and each bore the mark of the Dragon Emperor himself. I have also learned that the Gray Fog has spread towards the Penacles from the east. ”
He tried to see if the city was visible from this distance, but only managed to find more humans. "Can the city survive?"
“Gryphon has knowledge from the library as well as its own unique capabilities. It may be a long fight.”
A group of riders passed them, choosing to avoid the crowds by traveling far to the side. They were all wearing leather, and each of them had an appearance that could only be obtained from years of experience in the art of war. Their little metal helmet failed to cover the unruly blonde hair. From their faces, Cabe must have been tempted to believe that they were all brothers.
“Warriors from Zuu. Gryphon must have prepared this and sent reinforcements.”
“Wouldn't that make their own city powerless?”
He shrugged his shoulders. "Maybe not. The Barren Land is in their south. To the north lies the Dagora Forest, where the Green Dragon reigns quietly and rarely interferes with other races. Even during the Turning War. That's one of the reasons we never attacked him.” There was a strange tone in his voice, as if there was more to say.
Suddenly, Darkhorse became agitated and signaled that he wanted to turn off and talk to the two. Cabe was made as if he was pulling the reins, but it was the mount that made the real decision.
When they had driven quite far from the road, Darkhorse stopped. He waited a while before speaking.
"I feel something. Big shape, maybe a firerake. They seem to be heading here.”
"Do you think they're coming for us?" Cabe nervously observed the sky.
The black horse laughed. “Is it important? If anything happens, we will definitely be in the middle of it! ”
The woman looked at the beast with disdain. “I find your humor a bit difficult to understand. How much would you say?”
"Two. Both fast.”
He's nodding. Scouts. How soon?"
“I dare say that they will be seen after we get back on the road. As long as we go back now, that's all. ”
Cabe was looking at something towards the City of Knowledge. "Something's interrupting the journey ahead."
All three seemed. Darkhorse focused his one glittering eye onto the area Cabe mentioned. "My apology! I obviously miscalculated! Two drakes flying fast on the road! They seem to harass travelers at random points along the way! ”
The witch is grim. "Rurry up! We must destroy them!”
It made Darkhorse laugh again. "You're accusing me of bloodlust!"
Before he could answer, they were already on their way back to the road. The drakes swooped here and there, greatly enjoying what they were doing. Until now, they had only limited themselves to scaring humans, but it wouldn't be long before the dragons started playing more seriously.
Darkhorse is almost on the road. “I suggest you get off. Otherwise, we present ourselves as clear targets after the battle begins! ”
Drakes are getting bolder. They were rarely allowed to roam far from their masters and now enjoy their freedom. Someone looked at the two wanderers and their horses and roared. It was surging towards them.
Cabe lay on the ground, the Horned Sword came out. Gwen descended just before the dragon reached the range. Black horse back.
As the monster approached, Cabe quickly turned towards the horse. "Can you take him like you did at the dam?"
"No! Air is not my element! If you can make it land—”
The Lady's fingers move in a rapid pattern. "I don't think that he would be very happy to help us!"
Spell exploded. Drake suddenly finds himself bombarded by tiny bursts of energy. They go on and on. The creature tried to fly around them, but they just moved with it.
“Fireworks, Miss Gwen? It's not a holiday!”
