The Central Intelligence Agency (in English: Central Intelligence Agency, CIA) is one of the United States federal government intelligence agencies. As an executive agency, the CIA is under the Director of National Intelligence.[6]
The CIA has three main activities: collecting information about foreign governments, companies, and individuals; analyzing that information along with intelligence from U. S. intelligence agencies. others to produce national security intelligence assessments submitted to senior United States policy makers; and carry out or supervise closed-door activities and some tactical operations by its own employees, members of the U. S. military., or other associates at the request of the President of the United States.[7][8][9][10][11] For example, the CIA could have foreign political influence through its tactical divisions such as the Special Activities Division.[12]
The CIA headquarters is located in Langley, Virginia, a few miles west of Washington, D. C.[13] Its employees work in U. S. embassies and a number of other locations around the world.[14][15]
The CIA replaced the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) established in World War II to coordinate covert espionage activities of the United States Armed Forces against Axis powers. The National Security Act of 1947 formalized the existence of the CIA and "erased the function of police or law enforcement at home and abroad".[16][17]
Criticisms have been leveled against the CIA for its security and counterintelligence failures, intelligence analysis failures, human rights issues, foreign investigations and document disclosures, influencing public opinion and law enforcement, and, drug smuggling, and lying to Congress.[18] Others, such as Eastern bloc defector Ion Mihai Pacepa, recognized the CIA as "the best intelligence organization in the world by far," and it argues that CIA activities were meticulously conducted and had not been thought of by other intelligence agencies around the world.[19]
The CIA acts as an agent of HUMINT (human intelligence) and the principal general analysis of the United States under the Director of National Intelligence, director or director of the 16-member United States Intelligence Community. In addition, the CIA obtains information from other U. S. government intelligence agencies, commercial information sources, and foreign intelligence services.[citation needed]
