Claire joined Laney on the bed and hugged her. “Who needs Laney sandwich?”
I hugged him from the other side.
“It's okay, guys. Don't feel sorry for me. "
"We don't feel sorry for you. We just need a hug. ” I squeezed it tighter.
She laughs. "I'm gonna miss you."
I squeezed it for the last time and stood up.
"I think it's his clothes" Laney said.
I let him change the subject, feeling he needed to. "You think? Does it say backyard barbecue? ” I turn. “There are even pockets for my phone.”
"I'm so confused. Who's this new guy? I can't forget the fact that you haven't told us anything about him. " Claire grabbed her drink that was still lying on the table and almost fell out of bed.
Laney grabbed his leg, preventing him from falling. Yeah, shouldn't we know that?
“It's a blind date. I don't know anything about him. "
“Who set you up on a blind date and since when have you ever agreed to go with someone invisible?”
I jerked. I had never been framed on a blind date before, but I assumed that I would say yes if I trusted the person who framed me. “This girl is in my government class. He's junior. That's his older brother. "
"What's? Some girl from your class framed you with her brother and you said yes? "
"I owe him a little."
"Why?"
I'm not very nice to him and his friends.
“Oh, I understand. Is this like a charity date? Will you be safe? ”
"No. I mean, yes, of course I'll be safe. And no, his brother doesn't need alms. " I turned around and looked at myself in a full-sized mirror. "So yeah? No?"
“Yes, it's perfect. Let your hair wavy and pair it with your wedge sandals. Unless he's short. Is he short? ”
“No, he's not short.” He's actually a really nice height for me. “So, are you guys going to Logan's party tonight?”
Claire, who was stirring the straw around her cup, looked up. “Logan have a party tonight?”
"Yes." Yeah."
“We've never heard of it,” Laney said.
"Oh sorry. I should have told you. I think he just invited everyone. You better go."
We were not invited.
“He probably thought I'd tell you. Sorry."
Claire and Laney stared for a moment and then Claire returned to drink. “Yes, sounds fun. Maybe we should go, Laney. Let's invite Jules too. ”
I don't know if they were angry at me for not telling them or what. I feel bad. I just imagined him telling everyone. I'll try to join you all after my date.
“Where will you go again?” my mother asked, mostly looking at me but her eyes kept on Bec, this time glued to the row of earrings lining her left ear.
“Just to my house. We had a Government together and Gia said she would help me learn. His address. " Bec slipped a piece of paper across the table to my mother. "And my parents' phone number is also there if you need to talk to them." She smiled and my mother's smile became less forced.
But to me my mother said, “Your sister is in town. I want us to go to dinner tonight as a family. ”
As he said this, Drew walked into the kitchen holding the keys to his car. “I'll go with some friends, Mom. Can we have dinner while I'm in town? ”
"What?" mother asked.
Drew stopped in the middle of the kitchen when he saw Bec, an expression of curiosity mastering his expression. He took both of his clothes then mine and didn't have to say anything out loud for me to know he was wondering who Bec was and why he was here.
“This is Gia's friend,” said my mother. “Bec, right?”
“You two are friends?” His tone showed his disbelief.
Bec let out a laugh. “Not many friends as study colleagues.”
This explanation does not change Drew's expression. He looked at me like he was seeing me for the first time. "Huh," he snorted, then finished walking through the kitchen. Are we all right, Mom? He flashed a smile that I remember always freed him from the trouble he caused during his stay here.
He kicked her out with his own smile.
I pointed to the front door. Look, he's not even staying. So I can go, right? ”
“Why are you so dressed up for a study session?” Ask mom while looking at me from top to bottom.
Reasons easy. "Because he has a sweet brother."
My mother rolled her eyes as if she now understood the whole reason I was hanging out with a strange creature standing in her kitchen. Okay, keep your phone on, Gia.
"Of course." I kissed her cheeks and Bec and I left the house without a sound.
When we got outside, I said, “Why need a complicated story? I thought your brother would pick me up. "
"Of course not."
“Only I did not prepare my mother. . . ”
"I?"
"Yes." Yeah."
“Nah, parents love things 'he helped me learn'. It makes them think their child is smart. But for the record, my grades in Government are two percent higher than yours. So if you need help to learn. . . ”
I laugh.
“Will he get upset because you came out when he was planning to go out to dinner as a family?”
"I don't think he planned it properly." I mostly thought he was using that as an excuse not to let me go with Bec.
“So she always looks like that?”
"What-like?" I looked over my shoulder hoping to see him standing on the porch, but the veranda was empty.
Bec unlocked the car door and we got in. "United to perfection."
I think of my mother, her hair is always styled, her makeup is always neat. I rarely see it any other way. “Yes. . . I think so."
As Bec retreated from the driveway, my mother appeared on the veranda. I smiled and waved. "So, when my mom calls your parents, because she's most likely going to call, they'll be okay?"
