5. Tokugawa shogunate part 1

Tokugawa shogunate (tokugawa bakufu, 1603—1868) or Edo Shogunate (Edo bakufu) is a military dictatorship of feudalism in Japan founded by Tokugawa Ieyasu and hereditary led by the Tokugawa shogun family. In the historical period of Japan, the reign of the Tokugawa Shogunate was called the Edo period, because the capital was located in Edo which is now called Tokyo. The Tokugawa shogunate ruled from the Edo Palace to the Meiji Restoration.

The Tokugawa shogunate was the third and final military dictatorship in Japan after the Kamakura Shogunate and the Muromachi Shogunate. The Tokugawa shogunate began on 24 March 1603 with the appointment of Tokugawa Ieyasu as Sei-i Taishogun ( ⁇ ) meaning Commander-in-Chief of the Expeditionary Force against the savages (the term “Taishogun” means commander of the armed forces) it ended when Tokugawa Yoshinobu returned power to the emperor (Taisei Hokan) on November 9, 1867.

The 264-year reign of the Tokugawa shogunate is referred to as the Edo period or Tokugawa era. The last period of the Tokugawa shogunate, marked by the rise of the movement to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate, was known as Bakumatsu.

Oda Nobunaga and his successor Toyotomi Hideyoshi were Japanese leaders in the Azuchi Momoyama era who succeeded in establishing the central government after successfully unifying the provinces in the Sengoku period. After the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, central government power was seized by Tokugawa Ieyasu who completed the takeover process and was given the title of Sei-i Taishogun in 1603. Tokugawa Ieyasu did not qualify as a shogun because he was not a descendant of the Minamoto clan. In order for the main requirement to become a shogun to be fulfilled, Ieyasu faked his bloodline into a descendant of the Minamoto clan in order to be elevated to shogunate. Ieyasu's descendants were hereditary shoguns and heads of government until the Meiji Restoration.

During the Tokugawa shogunate, the Japanese people were divided according to the class system based on the class division created by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The samurai class was at the top of the hierarchy, followed by farmers, craftsmen and merchants. Rebellions often result from rigid class system divisions that do not allow people to change classes. Taxes imposed on farmers always amount to a fixed amount not taking into account inflation. The samurai who controlled the land had to bear the consequences, because the amount of taxes that were collected more and more days the value was reduced. Disputes over taxes often ignited disputes between wealthy peasants and respectable but less prosperous samurai. Disputes often trigger local unrest until large-scale uprisings are generally put down immediately. The anti-Tokugawa shogunate grew stronger after the Tokugawa shogunate adopted a policy of allying with foreign powers.

After losing the Boshin War, culminating in the Meiji Restoration, the Tokugawa shogunate was defeated by the emperor's alliance with a number of influential daimyo. The Tokugawa shogunate officially ended after the 15th Tokugawa shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu retreated and power was restored to the hands of the emperor (Taisei Hokan).

“Shogun! We detected a change in weather directed southwest, The sky southwest is very dark as night!” The Tokugawa Shogunate Weather and Climate Observer reports to the Shogun.

“Do Not Worry! Even though we have many enemies today, according to the prediction of the emperor will come soon to our territory Foreign traders who wear bright Green clothes” The prophecy of the Emperor of Japan is very trusted by the Japanese Society at this time.

“(Sighing heavily) Shogun!!! I'm sorry to yell at you, the big alien-flagged Yacht with people dressed like us in Green, but they were apparently from the Southwest direction” Shogun's housekeeper reported that there were foreigners in the port.

“If they are our Enemies, finish them off!! If they are Foreign traders who are polite, take good care of them and are non-violent! Verily they are in the future!” The Shogun ordered his troops to welcome the foreigners.

“We carry out! We beg to withdraw!”

“Introduce yourself! What is the purpose of all of you visiting our Shogun Territory?” the Portuguese Veteran Soldier who was in the Shogun's army asked the young man.

“We are a merchant as well as a representative for Southeast Asia, we do not carry any weapons”

“O you who believe! If you do the debts for the appointed time, write them down. And let a writer among you write it right. Let not the author refuse to write it as God has taught him, so let him write. And let the debtor dictate, and let him fear Allah, his Lord, and let him not diminish him one bit. If the person who owes the debt is ill-intentioned or weak (the situation), or is unable to dictate himself, then his guardian should dictate it properly. And testify with two male witnesses among you. If there are no (witnesses) two men, then (may) a man and two women among the people you like from the witnesses (who are), if one forgets, the other reminds him. And let not the witnesses refuse when called. And do not get tired of writing it, for the deadline is both small and large (the debt). That is, more justly with Allah, more able to strengthen your testimony, and more close to your indecision, unless it is a cash trade that you are running among you, then there is no sin for you if you do not write it down. And take witness when you are trading, and let not the writer be made difficult and so is the witness. If you do (that), then really, it is ungodly to you. And fear Allah, Allah has taught you, and Allah is All-Knowing

(QS. Al-Baqarah 2: Verse 282)

“Shair What is it? Although we do not understand what is said but our hearts are at peace, is it magic?” one of the Tokugawa shogunate soldiers spoke to his friend.

“It is the base of the country, the holy book of the Qur’an us and our purpose is only to trade, not to fight!” The young man interrupted the conversation of two people behind the Portuguese Veteran Soldier in Japanese.

All the Japanese who were in the harbor were shocked to see a foreigner speaking fluent and fluent Japanese.
