The Tokugawa shogunate ended with the Meiji Restoration, the Meiji Restoration ( ⁇ Meiji-ishin), also known as the Meiji Revolution or Meiji Reform, and the Meiji Reformation, it was a series of events that culminated in the return of power in Japan to the Emperor in 1868. This restoration led to massive changes to Japan's political and social structure, and continued into the Edo period (often also called the End of the Tokugawa Shogunate) and the beginning of the Meiji period.

The Meiji Restoration took place from 1866 to 1869, three years spanning the end of the Edo period and the beginning of the Meiji period. This restoration was caused by the Treaty of Shimoda and the Treaty of Towsen Harris conducted by Commander Teuku Umar of the Indonesian Caliphate.
