The true story behind "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" involves a young German girl named Anneliese Michel. The story has also been made into a movie called "The Exorcism".
The first person to discover that Anneliese Michel has been possessed by an evil spirit is an elderly woman who accompanies Anneliese Michel during her pilgrimage. The woman realized the strangeness of Anneliese Michel when Anneliese Michel repeatedly avoided passing through the painting of Jesus. Anneliese Michel also refused when given holy water from the spring. The woman also said that she felt a different aura when she was near Anneliese Michel. A shaman from a nearby town checks out Anneliese Michel. He concluded that Anneliese Michel had indeed been possessed by an evil spirit. Anneliese Michel's parents asked the shaman for the ritual of exorcism, but the shaman refused. Finally, they asked the local bishop for help.
The distraught parents of Anneliese Michel then sought the help of a Bishop to heal Anneliese Michel. The bishop, Joseph Stangl, commissioned two pastors, Father Arnold Renz and Reverend Ernst Alt. Both were commissioned by the Bishop to perform a grand expulsion ritual against Anneliese Michel. The Exorcist rituals performed by the two pastors are based on “Rituale Romanum” in accordance with (Catholic Church) that took place in the 17th century. Father Arnold Renz is a former missionary in China, while Pastor Ernst is a regular Pastor in his native place. The two performed a ritual of exorcism against Anneliese Michel for 10 months, consisting of 67 sessions. Every week, one or two ritual sessions are performed. Some sessions even last up to 4 hours
According to The Washington Post, Anneliese Michel began to see demons in everyone she saw as she began to experience the strange symptoms. This may explain why Anneliese Michel is often hysterical all of a sudden. Even the two priests were convinced that since they performed the ritual of expulsion, the spirit that possessed Anneliese Michel had further aggravated the state of Anneliese Michel.
Anneliese Michel herself told the two priests that there were some spirits who now possessed her. He mentions the spirits of Judas Iscariot, Adolf Hitler, Nero, Cain, Fleischmann, and the most powerful, Lucifer. He also mentioned that the dark side of him also possessed him.
The two pastors were even confronted with the spirit of Lucifer who refused to come out of the body of Anneliese Michel. They say that this spirit is the most difficult spirit to deal with.
There is no definitive explanation as to why Anneliese Michel was possessed by the spirits. He was a religious man, and so was his family. Only, 4 years before Anneliese Michel was born, her mother gave birth to a child through an affair named Martha. When Anneliese Michel was a child, Anneliese Michel's mother encouraged him to do penance for sins committed by his mother. The priest believes this is the main reason Anneliese Michel is possessed by these spirits. ” This shouldn't have happened. This is the sacrifice of a child to his mother “, Reverend Ernst said.
On July 1, 1976, Anneliese Michel was found dead. According to the autopsy, Anneliese Michel died from severe dehydration and malnutrition. Before her death, Anneliese Michel refused to eat. He believed that his actions would hasten his death, and it was the only – way to exorcise the evil spirits that were possessing him. This made both of his parents very sad. Before her death, Anneliese Michel had spoken her last words “Beg for Absolution”, this was addressed to both pastors who had tried to help her, and to her mother she said ” Mother, I’m Afraid.”
A local court sentenced the two pastors to 6 months of probation and the family of Anneliese Michel. The charge is that they were deemed to be obstructing medical efforts to bring relief to Anneliese Michel. However, a lawyer defended them because they felt that what the family and the pastor had done was an attempt to cure Anneliese Michel.
Today, 32 years after the death of Anneliese Michel, with her father also killed (her mother could not be reached for this article), Anneliese Michel is still revered by small groups of Catholics.
