“Time to sleep, The Nail is near.”
“But a submissive child need not fear”
“Close your left eye, then the right one.”
“Time to say good night.”
Until I was 9 years old, I didn't think much about the meaning of the song. I thought it was just a regular lullaby sung by all the mothers in the country to their child. It was only after I got big enough and asked my friends.
But no one has ever heard that song.
Every night, when I was about to go to sleep, my mother would sing the same lullaby. And every night, I'll follow the lyrics. I would close my left eye when the song said so, and then I would close my right eye. And after my eyes are closed, I will try to fall asleep.
But when I was 9, I decided to turn it around.
I didn't expect anything to happen, I swear. It was just a form of rebellion of a child sitting in 3rd grade Elementary School. I didn't do it when Mom sang that nina bobo song. I don't want to be scolded. But after my mother left my room, I opened my eyes again. And this time I closed my right eye first ....
I opened my eyes again. I've seen something. Somebody's. Amidst the dim light coming through my window, I caught a glimpse of a man, standing in the corner of my room. He stood there, facing the wall. And I thought, when I opened my right eye again, that guy turned his body towards me.
But he disappeared.
I remember, my mind was like speeding through my head. I'm not sure I've seen anything before, maybe it's just my imagination. But what if it wasn't? What if something was there, something I could only see with my right eye closed? I've never seen him in my room before. He never bothered me. If he really existed, might he be harmless? But what if he wants to hurt me?
I'm afraid I'll see her again. But I'm also curious. That's why I closed my right eye again.
He was no longer in the corner of the room. He is now standing right beside my bed. And from the little light that shone through my room, I could see that she was holding a knife pointed right over my chest.
He then walked towards me as I began to look for a way to the door in the dark of my room. I looked up and saw it better.
First I thought he was a man, but now I'm not sure. It's not that I say she's female, but her face looks indistinguishable whether she's male or female. Maybe it's both, or maybe it's not both.
I didn't pay close attention to him, because at that time all I thought about was how to save my life from him. There are 3 things I remember about him.
He had only one eye that was lit up and wide open. No, his eyes were not centered in the middle like cyclops, but his eyes were on the left like normal human eyes. But where the right eye should be, there's nothing there. No holes or anything. It was just smooth skin, as if there was never anything there.
But that's not the strangest thing about him. The other thing is his mouth. He smiled, his mouth wide open. But between his lips, like there is no opening or oral cavity. There are no teeth. What I saw was like a flat ceramic slab with lines resembling teeth painted on it.
And the strangest and creepiest thing was his nails. There's only one. What I thought was a knife was not a knife at all. I just realized it was his middle fingernail. The other fingers on his hand looked normal. But his middle finger was enlarged to a disgusting size and a sharp and curved nail like a knife stuck out at the tip of the finger.
I tried hard to open the door, but it seemed to be stuck. The creature continued to approach me while grimacing violently. Knives, ah no, the nails are pointed at me.
Finally in the last seconds before he managed to throw the sharp object into my chest again, I managed to open the door and ran while crying screaming towards my mother's room.
I'm not looking. I just keep running. And when I got in front of my mother's room, I opened it without knocking first and jumped on the bed.
“What's the matter dear?” my mother seemed to have fallen asleep and I think I woke her up. With his eyes still sleepy, he got up and turned his head towards me.
“I saw it,” I sobbed, “I saw The Nail!”
“The Nail?” ask mom. I immediately wrapped my hand around her waist to hug her.
“The Nail! From that song! I closed my right eye first, then I saw it!”
“What song is Nak? I don't understand what you mean ...”
I looked at my mother with teary eyes, “The song nina bobo that mom always sings every night in my room before I go to sleep.”
My mother's face immediately felt guilty.
“Nak, forgive mom. I know you're wrong, always come home late so kind of ignore you. But I never sang nina bobo in your room. Every time I want to go into your room to say good night, you're always asleep. I never went into your room.”
