In the ast century, during the reign of King Mongkut (1851-1868), when Bangkok was still called "Venice of the Far East", a woman called "NAK" married a man named "MAK" . They moved into a house in Bangkok's Phra Khanong district, near Wat Mahabut. After a while, her husband was called to go to war. Unfortunately, his wife is pregnant.
When her husband left, she died with the baby still in her body. So as Thais believe, a woman who died with her baby created a powerful spirit of soul called "PHI**HONG THONG KLOM" ( ⁇ ⁇ ⁇ ⁇ ). He became a ghost. Because she still loves her husband and her child so much, she takes on a human form and waits for "MAK"(the husband) to return.
The husband knows nothing about the death of his wife. So when he returned home, his wife was waiting for him. Many people warned him that his wife was dead and that he was living with ghosts but he did not believe them.
One day when "MAE NAK" was preparing dinner and her husband was bathing in the bathroom, she picked up a lemon that fell with her hand. Because the house was a traditional Thai house so the house was built on higher ground, so the lemon fell on the ground 2 meters lower than the floor of the house. So the ghost of "MAE NAK" makes her arms longer to get it.
But when her husband saw that, he understood that his wife was now a ghost. He managed to escape from the house and took refuge inside Wat Mahabut. "MAE NAK" terrorizes the locals as an expression of her anger towards them for helping her husband.
But the husband of the "MAE NAK" had been living with another woman. The ghost of "MAE NAK" manages to find them and kills her husband's new woman. Finally "MAE NAK" accepts to stop killing because a monk promises her that in the next life she will live again with her husband. Today Thais still believe in the story of "MAE NAK PHRA KHANONG" . Thai people do not like to talk about the ghost of Mae Nak, they are afraid to meet him in a dream while sleeping.
The spirit soul "MAE NAK" is said to love listening to the song "Mon Rak Luuk Tung".
Most of those who came to Wat Mahabut left with the intention to worship at the ghost temple "MAE NAK" , asking his spirit to bless their lives with good luck. They will also stop at the temple "TON TAKIEN" ( ⁇ ) for lucky lottery numbers.
"MAE NAK" is the short name for "MAE NAK PHRA KHANONG" . "MAE" ( ⁇ ) means mother but now many people call her "YES NAK" . "YES" ( ⁇ ) means giving mother. That story happened a century ago.
Mothers always warn their daughters to go home after school. Otherwise "MAE NAK" might catch them! The temple, where the ashes of "MAE NAK PHRA KHANONG" remain, is located near Sukhumvit road, soi 77. The temple is now famous. Because of some Thai TV series and some other movies.
Inside the temple there is a statue of "MAE NAK" covered with gold leaves.
