“Eh, wait a minute!”
I couldn't prevent the runaway children from avoiding me at all. I had expected them to behave this way, because they seemed to have already seen Valcke's horse carriage outside. But I had anticipated this.
I asked Dea to take out all the things I carried in the carriage cabin, to give to the children of the parlour. Dean went in with the guards who helped him, carrying baskets of bread and new clothes that Dea had bought in the market. All the baskets were placed in front of me.
“I brought new food and clothes. You guys want to see?” I asked, deliberately fishing them all. The average age of the orphanage children is still under ten years old. They are easy to lure with good clothes and food. Plus, the basket filled with bread I accidentally opened the cover so that the fragrance spread throughout the room.
It was also proven, seeing one of them who was the youngest, began to drool as soon as I saw the bread I brought. I thrust one loaf of bread in my hand towards the boy. Slowly, he began to advance, step by step.
“Come, don't be afraid. I still have a lot!”
“Do not go there, Kae!”
The youngest child was a girl named Kae. She turned to the older boy who called out to her earlier, but her stomach rang until it rang into my ears. Maybe he was really starving from not eating, or maybe from having to share with the other fifteen children before me at the moment, so he was still lacking in satiety. I don't know.
Eventually, Kae got to my face, although some of the children behind her still told her to go back to the back.
I put on the widest smile I've ever had, so that the little boy wouldn't be afraid of me. I took one hand and put a piece of bread there. The boy seemed to smell her for a moment, until he closed his eyes. Is that how it smells? Then, he started biting a small bite.
“Mmm!! Enakkk!” the boy's cry was joyful. He started biting again with a bigger cut. His body was jumping up and down so happy.
Thanks to Kae's scrumptious shout, the other children behind started to get curious. They went forward one by one. I put bread on them all.
“Come in line, yes! There are still many!”
The crowd of children was getting impatient. They form long lines. I gave them a piece of bread. The children started screaming, just like Kae did.
“Sister! Help me, hurry!” I asked Cass to come in. Cas pointed at himself for a moment. “I?”
“Iya, fast! They are impatient!”
“Ah, alright! Alright!” Cass immediately opened the basket containing the clothes. “Which hasn't got any clothes yet, make a new line in front of me!”
The children began to line up in front of Cass, preparing to receive the clothes he gave them. Thankfully, the cass could blend in easily even though he was a noble.
“Thank you, Brother!” a girl on Cass. My brother was watching the boy. The curious me asked him, “Why?”
“He looks like you used to!”
“Eh?”
After making sure all the children were given new bread and clothes, I repackaged the empty baskets, and asked Dea to take them back to the cabin. Cass stood up from his seat while distributing the clothes. He came up to me and asked, “You're here to hand out food and clothes?”
“There are other things again .. ah!”
I realized the presence of an old mother standing in the doorway. Apparently he just got back from somewhere. A girl whispered something while pointing at me.
“Mother, The older sister is handing out new bread and clothes!”
“Oh ..” The old mother looked at me with a suspicious look. I went over and greeted him, followed by Cass.
“Greetings!”
“Our names are Alissa and Cass!” I immediately cut off my brother's introduction. He almost mentioned Valcke's surname. The hunt for boys everywhere is still happening today. If the orphanage had heard that a noble was coming to the orphanage, they would have been much more on standby.
“Greetings. My name is Marie. I heard you two are handing out offerings for us? Thank you very much ... ” said Marie while looking down, a sign of gratitude. In this world, abandoned children in orphanages were not referred to as children of gods. Bread and new clothes for the children of the parlour are referred to as offerings.
“Ah, we only convey the trust of everyone in the middle district!” my answer. I pretended to be a citizen who came from among the middle districts. All communities there have activities to collect items for offerings, then send them as donations to various orphanages. So, what I did earlier was a natural thing, when I said I came from the middle district.
“Thank you very much! The kids are so grateful to get new clothes. They rarely get performances in the form of new clothes,” said Marie again.
“Oh, then ... have all the children received it?”
Marie circulated her gaze around while counting. “Looks like one more child ...”
A child came running from the direction of the room next to the stairs, “Mother, Brother Lucius is not in his room!”
In that instant, I gasped. Lucius, who I was looking for!
“Ah, the boy! Definitely going to the forest again!”
“Lucius it ...” I wish I wasn't wrong. Marie sighed, then explained, “One of the oldest children, is about the age of you. He used to play in the woods, even though I banned him!”
“Which side is it?” I was just excited again. Marie looked at me curling her forehead, before replying, “Yang is right outside the border of this city wall. He often goes there to collect firewood or just play.”
“May I know, what are the features?”
“Alissa, what's up?” Cass started to suspect I kept asking about the boy named Lucius. But I didn't answer it.
Marie glared for a moment. “Hair is silver, eyes are blue. The child was often faceless, so people often thought of him as a haughty child ..”
“Ah, then, I will deliver the clothes and bread directly to her!” I cried out while pointing at one of the baskets that still contained clothes and bread that Dea had not taken to the cabin.
“But, Miss, you don't have to bother---“
“Nothing!” I hurried away without hearing Marie's words again. Cass followed me out of the parlor. He seemed to be getting more and more clueless as to what I was doing.
“Alissa! I have no problem accompanying you anywhere without explaining anything like this, but not if you have to go to the forest.” Cass ran, trying to equalize my steps.
“But I have to get there, Brother!”
“Cannot!” Cass prevented my steps and pulled my hand until you stopped and turned to him. “I'm responsible for bringing you home whole and safe.”
“But---“
“Unless you explain, who Lucius is and what your purpose is to meet him.”
I thought for a moment. The story about me coming from another world cannot be accepted Cass easily. What am I supposed to say?
“Ummm, so to speak, if I have a dream about my future … ."
