"WHO are you, Goddess, be my wife." Thus said Maharaja Sentanu to Goddess Gangga who stood before him in the form of a human. King Sentanu was fascinated by the beauty of the Goddess that far surpassed ordinary human beauty.
With all his heart, the king asked the goddess. The king promised to give his kingdom, his wealth, even his life.
Dewi Gangga replied: "Open king, I am willing to be your wife. As long as you or anyone cannot come from where and who I really am. You also must not obstruct anything I do, Good or bad. You must not be angry with me for whatever reason. You cannot say something that makes me sad. If you violate those conditions, I will leave you. Do you agree and are willing to promise not to violate it?."
The drunken king swore he would abide by all those requirements. Finally, Dewi Gangga was married and lived with King Sentanu.
The heart of the king was captivated by the simplicity, elegance, and love of Dewi Ganga which never receded. They lead a very happy life. I don't feel like time is passing very fast.
The goddess Ganges gave birth to many children. Every child that he had just born he brought and buried in the river Ganges. Then he returned to the king with a radiant face.
Seeing the actions of his wife so cruel, King Sentanu was anxious and very sad. But he can only keep it in his heart. He remembered his promise first. Many times the king wondered in his heart, who exactly was his queen, where she came from, and why she acted like a cruel sorcerer. For fear of breaking such a great oath and love, the king did not blame or reproach her empress.
He shouted loudly: "Stop it! Why are you so willing to commit cruel acts and kill your own innocent flesh and blood?" With stifled anger King Sentanu held the empress to commit such a cruel act.
"O Lord, great king" answered the goddess Ganga, "You have broken your promise to me. Your heart has been tethered to this child. You don't need me anymore, I'm leaving. I will not kill this child. Before judging me, listen to my explanation first. Actually I am Batari Gangga who is worshipped by gods and humans. I was forced to play this cruel play because of the curse of Resi wasistha. Resi Wasistha cursed the eight wasu so that it was born in the human world. They then asked for my willingness to be their mother, and you will reach a higher place in the afterlife. I'll take your youngest son and raise him. Later, I'll hand over this child as my gift to you." After saying so, Batari Gangga disappeared with the baby. Later this baby will be known as Bhisma.
When the Goddess Ganga disappeared and brought her eighth baby, the king abandoned all worldly pleasures and ruled the kingdom in a spirit of asceticism. One day while walking along the banks of the Ganges, he saw a boy who was surrounded by the majesty and beauty of Dewandra, king of the gods. The boy was playing with arrows. He repeatedly released arrows across the river Ganges. There was no one near him. Suddenly, in the presence of the king who was amazed at the beauty and dexterity of the child, the Goddess Ganga appeared. The Goddess said that the child was her own child.
He said: "O Lord, King, this is our eighth child. It's already big. He's kunamai Dewabrata. I taught him the art of war. His devotion is equivalent to the Parasurama. He has studied the Vedas and the Vedanta of the Wasistha sages. He also mastered the art and science of sukra. Accept this child. Later he will become a great archer, hero, and statesman. Then Batari Durga blessed the child; handed it over to his father, King Sentanu; and disappeared.
