Allison POV
This son of a bitch David Montgomery threatened to withhold my payment. I braced myself to be invisible destroyed in front of him, it would be too easy for them.
I felt like a fool, and they found me crying, I didn't want it to be too easy to look defeated. So I put on my glasses staring at the big screen in front of me as he walked in. My hand moved between the keys to the pointer on my desk, actually today I didn't do anything because my mind was messed up.
But I can pretend to be okay as hard as a coral. There won't be any stories of you seeing me lose and being pathetic.
"Good day, you got 25 minutes, Mr. Montgomery. Turns out you're close friends with Mr. Xavier. Been long?" I wonder how close they are.
"He's been a corporate lawyer for about five years. Maybe six years."
"It's been a long time. Why doesn't he follow your style of high-class mafia?" I grimaced to think that Xavier was coming with David. Yes they will not be comparable. It's not good to imagine.
I'm making my own comparisons in my brain.
"Allison, last night was a misunderstanding. What you heard last night wasn't quite what you heard."
"What you want, my personal relationship is none of your business, Mr. Montgomery. But well you have 20 minutes to talk whatever you want, just because you're a colleague, but after this our relationship will be limited to business, you understand." I was being formal, but I started to talk more casually to her because we met a lot later.
"I came here to straighten things out. Xavier is my friend. Actually he also put your name on the project invitation, last night a lot of misunderstandings happened because of me."
"Oh so you think I should thank him. You know, your mindset is impressive."
"I don't want to say anything about mindset. The matter of him entering the recommendation is true, but more importantly I want to start with it and I just want to tell you the truth. The test problem was an actual event not like that."
"Oh good, so you have your own story. You got 20 minutes left. I'll listen to your version."
"This isn't my version but what's really going on." I didn't look at him, just shrugged my shoulders. Whatever their story is, the main thing is not that.
"You're his friend, obviously you'll defend him. What I'm hearing is clear, he himself said he tested our relationship through you. If he's not mistaken, obviously I don't like him playing me, you two know each other, I don't know anything. He didn't even bother to tell me. Why do I feel like a fool."
I want to laugh, because it's funny. Two friends seemed to be playing tricks and researching my feelings. I hope my lover is the one who can keep our privacy, or maybe I wish Xavier too much. From the beginning his logical mind never really liked me.
If she likes me, she won't be silent and not offended if her friend takes her boyfriend to dinner. I expect too much from these guys. Or are they so? Women are too much about our own feelings.
"He didn't mean anything bad, he just wasn't sure of himself, he was going to tell you. You know after you turned me down he just dared to accept you."
"Allison, I'm sorry I was involved last night. But you actually misunderstood our words. He never asked me to test me. I'm the only one who did it and told him that." Unfortunately David's lengthy explanation didn't make any changes for me.
"You done David?" I lifted my gaze from the screen looking at it while playing my eating pencil. I've already broken half a dozen fillings I guess.
"I swear by whatever I say is true Allison." I smiled wryly. Yeah, maybe he's right, but unfortunately the one who should have sworn it wasn't him, yeah even if I didn't give Xavier any chance. I'm not moved at all to listen to anything else today.
"Thank you for coming here and explaining everything David. I appreciated. But I'm a lot of work now. I'll solve my own problems with Xavier."
"Please listen to me, he didn't ask me to test anything."
"I listened to you David. I'm clear what you want to say. But my relationship with Xavier is none of your business. It's both our business... We will remain as business partners. Oh yeah, don't forget your payment can't be delayed. Or am I going to send Xavier to you for breach of agreement? Is Xavier your lawyer too?"
"Well, he's my lawyer." The answer is quick and honest.
"Well, maybe I should change lawyers."
"He loves you, don't think too far." Now I'm laughing.
"Love? God, you don't think too far, David."
David Montgomery sighed at my answer. Clearly seeing the way I responded to all of this, he should know that all of this matter is not finished with his explanation.
"I think you should go now. Don't bother yourself anymore."
"Allison's... Don't blame..." I cut out the sentence because I've heard enough.
"Your time is up David. We'll just finish this conversation. Go awayl. Thank you for coming here." He's still not gone, I picked up my phone.
"Alice, please take the guests out."
I'm done with this conversation. There's nothing more to do with David Montgomery.
He dared to talk about love.
Does a person like him know what love is?
