AL-HABIB ABDULLAH BIN UMAR AS-SHATIRI and Santri Durhaka Yang Tragic

“Hlak first before sains”

“With ahlaklah you can understand sains”

On this occasion we will tell about the tragic story of a santri who is very clever but he does not have Ethics to his own teacher.

This story we get from our teacher Sayyidi Sheikh Muhammad bin Ali Ba’atiyah him from his teacher Al Allamah Al-Habib Abdullah bin Shodiq Al-Habsyi, he was from his teacher Al Allamah Al-Habib Abdullah bin Umar As-Shatiri and he was the character referred to in this story.

Narrated in Tarim Yemen there is a pesantren named “Rubath Tarim”, this pesantren has given birth to tens of thousands of Ulama’ scattered around the world. There the students are taught a variety of sciences, especially the specification of Fiqh Science as its superiority.

In the pesantren there is also a santri think of his name “Fulan”, this Fulan is a santri who lived 13 years with Habib Abdullah Bin Umar As-Shatiri and is very smart, strong memorization, he said, agile and diligent until it is said that he became a santri who has reached the Mufti degree so clever. he also memorized all the mas’alah fiqhiyah contained in the book “Tuhtatul Muhtaj” a book that is 10 volumes thick of prints Darud Diyak or 4 volumes of prints Darul Polik Ilmiyah.

His daily life in pesantren, this Fulan is liked by his friends because he is needed by his colleagues to explain lessons that have not been understood and teach other books. 13 Years of being a santri Rubath Tarim of course almost certainly his capacity he includes a large Ulama’. His name was famous until the boarding school came out that he was among the candidates for the great Ulama who would appear next.

Until finally Syetan fooled the Fulan, he also felt the most Alim people, even he felt the quality of himself was in line with the piety of his great teacher. Not enough until there, the arrogance continues until he dares to call his teacher by name only; “Ya Abdullah /Duhai Abdullah”!!!.

In the eyes of the Scientists this is indeed a very very despicable act and a real arrogance.

“Whosoever will call his teacher by his name directly (do not glorify him when calling) then he will not die unless he has felt a faqir life both in science and material.”

Seeing the arrogance of the Fulan, Al-Habib Abdullah As-Shatiri was patient and chose to remain silent. Sayyidi Sheikh Muhammad bin Ali Ba’atiyah said;

“The silence of a teacher when his student is disrespectful to his teacher will still get Adzab from Allah SWT.”

The pride continued, the Fulan would one day come out of Rubath Tarim to go to the city of Mukalla to preach. He also came out of the pesantren without permission to Al-Habib Abdullah As-Shatiri, until at “Madras Ribath” the designation for the study of the rutinan in rubath tarim, until, Habib Abdullah asked about the existence of the Fulan who usually sat in front but did not seem to be seen;

“Where is Fulan??”

Some of the students who knew answered;

“Si Fulan is preaching to the city of Mukalla”.

Habib said “Did he give me permission??”,

The other students were silent. And Habib Abdullah then said;

“Alright, then let the Fulan go but the knowledge is still here!!!.”

On the other hand in the city of Mukalla Yemen, the, the scholars and scholars of tholib ilim and the lovers of Habib Abdullah As-Shatiri who heard that the Fulan senior santri Rubath Tarim invited the Fulan to give his lecture.

The Fulan went up to the pulpit and began the content of his talk, he began with basmalah, hamdalah, sholawat to the Prophet, amma ba’du. Then he read a verse:

“I did not create jinn and men except that they worship Me (56) I did not want the slightest sustenance from them and I did not want them to feed Me (57) Truly Allah, He Is the Provider Who Has Power Again Very Sturdy (58)”. [QC. Adz-Dzariyat: 56-58]

And wanted to explain this verse, but it turned out that he was silent like a wooden standing upright and confused unable to speak explained the verse . Until he sat for five minutes he was silent in front of the congregation’ah in front of him he turned to the congregation and they also looked at the Fulan. Until finally he sat crying because all the knowledge he had ever memorized was lost instantly. Even the little book of Safinatun Najah does not memorize a single sentence whatever other book of Tuhfah that was originally memorized.

When engaged like a very good camel expensive price because it has its own privileges and advantages .

Indeed it has been mastered by the shetan, he was reluctant to tawadlu’ and apologized to the teacher.

His life has become more tragic, his knowledge has been lost and without any family willing to accept it without friends who care about his fate. Until he lived in a very poor state in the suburbs of Mukalla and day to day became a Charcoal seller in the market area store. Until the end of his life he lived in poverty even for a shroud he did not have and was given alms by a generous ahlul khoir. Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi roji’un.

And one who treated his body and donated the shroud and the management of his body Habib Abdullah Sodiq Al-Habshi .

From this story let us all improve our ethics to our teachers and to anyone around us even though we already have a lot of knowledge. Similarly let us mutually Tawadlu’, humble ourselves and keep from arrogance that can destroy ourselves.

A Message From The Story Above

Sayyid Muhammad bin ‘Alawi al-Maliki says :

“I am angry at the claimant (science) who does not respect his ustadz, even though the ustadz is his own friend”.

Imam Nawawi said :

“Seyogya for a student tawadlu’ (humble) to his teacher and maintain manners when with him, although the teacher is younger, not so famous, not so, his subjects were inferior and (possibly) devoutly inferior to his students. With tawadlu’ (low heart), undoubtedly science will he get”.

He also said :

“The sin of disobedience to both parents can be removed by repenting, while the sin of disobedience to the teacher will not be erased”

Al-Habib ‘Abdullah bin ‘Alawi al-Haddad says :

“The most dangerous thing for a student is the change of heart of the teacher to his students (from the first to the first to anger). If only all the teachers from the east and west gathered to improve the condition of the student, then they would not be able to unless the teacher had been pleased with him”.

The words above as a reflection material for all of us who in fact are still students. If we happen to be teachers, then we should never expect to be respected.

May we all be truly devoted to our teachers and may we gain a blessed and fruitful science, both in the world and in the hereafter.

The Copas group Santri lirboyo.

Recollecting.
