WHEN DIFFERENT IS SAID TO BE KENISANTUAN
Kiai Faqih, Maskumambang, Gresik, turned out to have a very close relationship with Hadratusyaikh KH. Hashim Ash'ari because of his fate and struggle in finding knowledge and with the same teacher. Moreover, when Ormas NU was established on 16 Rajab 1344 H/31 January 1926 in Surabaya, their familiarity was even higher.
They were both appointed by the kiai to assume positions in the Organization. Hadratusyaikh was appointed as Rais Akbar and Kiai Faqih as Deputy Rais Akbar. Their familiarity with running the wheels of organization is not without differences. They never disagreed in response to a problem related to the law of the use of kentongan.
At least, since 1918, 1926 and survive until now, NU every month has published a Scientific Journal. The strong scientific tradition of the scholars or kiai NU is actually the forerunner of the largest Islamic organizations in Indonesia. In the first issue of a monthly scientific journal Nahdlatul Ulama, Hadratusyaikh wrote that the use of kentongan (a tool from wood that is beaten to sound loud) is not allowed to call prayers in Islamic law. The basis of his opinion was that the use of the tool was not found in the postulate.
Hadratussyaikh, so he is commonly called indeed known as a scholar who is very master of the science of hadith, because it is very reasonable if he thinks like that, because it is not found in the proposition shorih (clear) about the ability to use the tool. There is an argument he, the proposition only explains about the kentongan similar to the bells commonly used by the Christians as a reminder at every time of worship.
It is as we can read now in the book ar Risalah al Musammah bi al Jasus fi Bayani Hukmi an Naqus, that Kiai Hashim explained that he had heard from his teacher, Shaykh Muhammad Syu’aib ibn Abdurrahman al-Maghribi about kentongan. In the explanation explained that the kentongan is a tool used by Christians as a reminder at every time of worship.
The opinion was refuted by Kiai Faqih, Maskumambang, Gresik. In publishing the following month of the journal, Kiai Faqih stated that kentongan could be used. The reason he is a kentongan diqiyaskan (equal) with a beduk as a caller for prayer, if the bedug can be used of course the kentongan can also be used. As soon as the description of Kiai Faqih appeared, KH. Hashim Asy’ari immediately called the scholars of Jombang and his senior students, to gather at the Tebuireng School, Jombang. He then ordered both articles to be read to the audience. After that, he stated that they could use one of the two callers freely.
All he asked for was one thing, which should be in the Tebuireng Mosque, Jombang kentongan was not used forever. His view reflects the attitude of respecting the opinion of Kiai Faqih Maskumambang. In the month Maulid/Rabi’ul Early next, KH. Hashim Asy’ari was invited to give a lecture at Pesantren Maskumambang. Three days earlier, the envoys of Kiai Faqih Maskumambang met the heads/leaders of the mosque and surau in Gresik district with his message:
This attitude was taken by him because of his respect for Kiai Hashim Asy’ari.
After completing the task, the santri also faced back to the Kiai. One of the santri came forward before Kiai Faqih and said innocently.
“Sorry Kiai, Kiai's mandate to us to lower kentongan during the arrival of Kiai Hasyim Asy’ari we have carried out.”
Just contact KH. Faqih was very embarrassed. Because the Kiai mentioned in his mandate had been sitting since then. None other than KH. Hasyim Asy’ari. Apparently the santri did not know that in front of Kiai they were KH. Hasyim Asy’ari it. With a smile save shame, KH. Faqih said to his disciples;
“Yes already, here you all kiss Kiai Hasyim Asy’ari.”

From the story above, we know that Kiai Hashim at that time was so consistent with his opinion. When other scholars contradict Hadratusyaikh, he and other scholars can still respect each other.
At a minimum, Kiai Hashim does not prohibit in general, but only specifically prohibits his pesantren, namely Tebuireng Pesantren. Therefore, until now Tebuireng Pesantren never wear kentongan as a reminder of the entry of prayer time. Only use bedug as a pre-adzan accompaniment.
