Chapter 37: The Effects of a Box of Memories

"Elle's in your room, '" said Dean as Bren passed through the living room. Bren ignored his father who was busy sipping coffee without staring at him.

Bren rushed off to the bedroom. He can't wait to meet Elle, and make sure the girl is okay.

However, when he had just opened the door of his room. A sight surprised him. Defeating her worry for Elle.

The brown box contained her secret, face down not far from where Elle was standing. With content that has been scattered everywhere.

Bren panic. Feeling upset for a moment. It feels like being stripped* and peeked at all of a sudden. No one can see the box. Especially Elle!

"Who said you had the right to go into my room?" snapped Bren emotion. Elle wasn't supposed to be here and unlock her secret like that.

Hearing Bren's loud voice made Elle's back flinch. Then he turned his body quickly, facing towards Bren.

"Bren—"

"Get out!" bren snapped while pointing towards the door.

Elle looked surprised. So he could only budge where he stood right now.

Bren's getting impatient. So, he emphasized every word that was thrown from his mouth. "OUT. NOW IT'S. ALSO!"

As if awaking from something, Elle immediately walked out towards the exit. As he stood beside Bren who was completely unwilling to look at him, Elle once again muttered softly, "Bren—"

Bren still did not want to look towards Elle. He looked straight ahead. Towards the contents of the chocolate box scattered on the floor. "Just go. Nowow. I don't want to see you."

Elle doesn't understand why Bren is mad at her. He didn't do anything. After all, it was Bren's father who told him to wait for Bren in the boy's room.

"Hi, Girl. You want to go home?" dean asked in surprise, as Elle passed through the living room.

Elle nodded her head while looking down deeply. "Yes. I think Bren wants me to go. Thank ye. Good night." Elle tried to speak as minimally as possible. Because he thought, his tears would fall if he talked more and more.

Elle hated herself, who cried so easily. He wiped away the tears on his face with the back of his hand.

"Stop flowing, Foolish Tears!" he continued walking.

Not having brought her own car today, Elle ended up going to Bren's house in a taxi. Elle was really unlucky today. Fighting with Bren. Car's busted. Then, now? He had trouble finding a taxi.

Elle's too embarrassed to call Yellena now. Her brother would definitely mock her, when he saw her present condition.

The sound of the car horn shocked Elle. As Elle turned his head toward the source of the sound, Dean's face poked out from behind the open windshield.

"Come, Elle. I'll take you, "be friendly.

Elle initially wanted to reject Dean's offer. However, he felt bad. Because Dean was willing to come along to deliver him.

Elle finally got into Dean's car. And the car drove through New York City.

"Whatever Bren did to you, I won't ask you to forgive him. But, one thing you need to know. Bren loves you."

Elle gawked at Dean's sudden revelation. The sadness is gone. Replacing with confusion.

Is Dean Hudson trying to cheer him up? If so, it will look very sad.

Dean chuckled at the expression on Elle's face. Then he added. "Don't misunderstand me. I'm not bragging or lying to comfort you, son. I'm just telling you the truth."

Elle shook her head strongly. "No. He doesn't love me. If he loves me, then it should be—"

Elle was silent for a moment then added inwardly. "He hasn't forgotten me."

"shoulda?" Dean scrunched his forehead.

"There's Sara. I think Sara's more important than me." Elle tried to divert the conversation.

"Come, Son. Sara's just a friend."

"I'm not even his best friend. I'm just a stranger" muttered little Elle.

They had reached the courtyard of Elle's house when Dean was just about to reply to Elle. Elle got out of Dean's car and thanked him. Without waiting for a reply from Dean, Elle immediately ran towards his house.

Elle's porch lights are still out. Her mother and sister were not at home.

Good though. That way he can cry in the dark without anyone listening.

Bren tidied up his stuff scattered on the floor with a sour face.

Damnit damnit! Has Elle seen it all? If so, then he would be really embarrassed.

Elle must have thought of herself as a liar. The girl must have felt victorious after learning that Bren still remembered her.

Bren holds a portrait of himself and Elle. There he smiled widely. Same with Elle. This photo was taken on Bren's birthday.

If, Bren knew that on that day Elle would leave him without a word of farewell, then he would not smile that wide.

Breng*bind*. It was the worst birthday of Bren's life. Because in addition to Elle who no longer see him the next day, on the same day his mother announced that her mother would leave him for her new family.

From then on, Bren moves to New York to live with his estranged father.

When Bren reunites with Elle in the first year of her High School days, Bren's heart is at first excited. However, seeing Elle greeting him as if nothing had happened, made Bren upset.

How could Elle greet him and smile that wide? The look on Elle's face looked happy when she saw it. But is it really sincere? If Elle was that happy to see him, why would the girl have to leave him? Without any explanation. Just disappear. And just as easily back. Get back into his life without regret or shame.

Bren stuffed the figura in his hand into the cardboard roughly. Followed by other stuff. Like the couple bracelet Elle gave her as a child. Until the letter Elle wrote to her recently.

Yeah, God! Bren feels like he's gone crazy for keeping the stuff Elle gave him. He should have thrown all this away. These items only made him even more unable to forget the past.

Bren stood up and carried the brown cardboard he had kept for years out of the room. He went to the back of the house and put the cardboard on a big trash can.

Tomorrow, the maid at her house will clean the cardboard.

However, just a few steps Bren entered the house. He's back out. Then take again the cardboard that he originally wanted to throw away.

I don't know. He was still unable to dispose of a box of memories even though the contents were full of wounds.
